As the Arab-Israeli conflict approached, Jewish forces tried to secure as many weapons as they could. One of most important purchases was an arms contract with the Czechoslovakian Government which included 4,500 K98k rifles and a significant supply of ammunition. Later the Israeli Defence Force ordered more Mauser Karabiner 98k rifles from Fabrique Nationale. This video show cases an Israeli converted mauser produced by BRNO in 1945 that was originally manufactured for use by the soldiers of Nazi Germany.
With thanks to ZAHAL.ORG for some background information on the early Israeli struggle.

I sure like the style of this guy's videos- old school. The rundown, the fire positions, the explanation, the fact it's being done in field conditions. "Get these rifles wet guys"- exactly. Tried but can't embrace the Mauser 98 much, admire it's rugged action though and that it is combat proven. Plus in 7.62 NATO it would be a handy calibre. To me the two greatest combat rifles of the 20th. century are the Lee Enfield No. 4 and the FN FAL. The finest examples of both IMO are Canadian made.

I really like this rifle because of the history from being to the end. Especially with the 7.62/308 cartridge the only thing I would add is a receiver mounted aperture sight. Were all of the Israeli Mausers restocked? I really like the laminate stocks the Germans used. Thanks for sharing

I got one from some surplus outfit in Montreal in the mid 80's advertised as a VG.For VG I paid a $5 premium, It had all the German markings but was over stamped with the BIG 7.62 on the receiver and the stock. It shot way better than I could. I refinished the wood and put it way for my 5 yrs in Lahr. A young hunter wanted to go out with me and didn't have any money for a gun so I loaned it to him and he shot deer like crazy with it. Eventually because of bifocals I had mounts put on and scoped it. Well he shot even more deer with it. So I gave him the rifle. I don't miss it because most falls it is out killing whitetails and he loves it. So it was a win win win except for the deer. You are right they are a great shooting rifle. I don't think the surplus ones actually did much more than parade square work and the bores are great. Wish the weather had been nicer for that video. Someday do a followup with a buddy I like to see the plate rock. Thanks

People say that Mausers have "stronger actions", practically, what does that mean? I have fired tons of Enfields and have never had one blow up in my face, or know of one doing it in anyone elses face.
@sanfordhoffman2392
@sanfordhoffman2392 7 жыл бұрын
+Minute Man I think the Mauser is "over engineered". That's why they are the first choice when someone wants to rechamber them for higher pressure ammo. 300 Win Mag comes to mind. Other than that you're pretty much correct in that an Enfield would hold up just as well as a Mauser with the ammo they've been designed to shoot.
@Treblaine
@Treblaine 7 жыл бұрын
Lee Enfields will need to be regularly headspaced, the action will stretch with use while a mauser type action shot out to smoothbore (as seen even with heavy use) before the lockup goes. SMLE is going to be a greater logistical burden as more often they are going to have to be sent back to be worked over, it's hard to do this in the field as you need to try so many different bolt heads to get a good fit. Even if you can tolerate the accuracy degrading as headspace goes it's going to put more and more strain on the case, case head separations become much more likely. Overall the Lee Enfield action is safe enough but because the design is inherent weaker it is generally over built to compensate, hence Lee Enfields are typically much heavier than a front locking Mauser action for the same barrel length. In a sense it's the Lee Enfield which is over-engineered. Also compromise in power, 8x57mm is about 2700fps with 175-grain bullet while Mk VII .303 was 2440fps for the same weight bullet. While modern Lee Enfields can handle .308, modern mauser actions can handle .300 Win Mag. Overpressure events are going to be far more likely in the military as ammunition production is far tougher, ammo will be stored badly, round set deeper in rough transport and things like barrel obstructions from soldiers diving into mud to avoid being killed by bullets and bombs. Rear locking is generally easier, it's the most direct solution. But it causes a load of other little minor problems, and they may not actually be all that serious, but even British tried to move to a front locking rifle in 1913 before WW1 put a kibosh on those plans for a rifle they knew and could get in production.

Man that rain and overcast, service road, power lines, looks just like western Oregon Cascades. I have two k98 8mm's but my son, the wise one, has three Israli's, one is DOU, and an FN, and a Mauser Orbendorf. The FN is in the nicest condition, I understand these were built post war as an arms order. Anyway great guns. What is really weird is a couple have Nazi Eagles that were missed and also have a Star of David on them. That is a lot of history and deep thought.

You are a man of my own heart. Mirrored my thoughts exactly. The 98 Mauser is great but the Lee Enfield is greater and the one I would reach for when/if things get/got serious. I have the identical BRNO to yours. Chose it out of a stack because of the brand and condition. 7.62 was a bonus as I was a full bore target shooter at the time with a ready supply ammo and the 7.9 is problematic here in Australia. Tried it and stored it as a nice collectable. Have quiet a few Lee Enfields including a No4 converted to 7.62 (and proof tested) and a No5 "Jungle Carbine". The one I do use these days is a Zestava Mauser 98 M70 in 22-250 for pest control (four legged). Well made,very accurate and ideal calibre here and serves me well in this roll. Enjoyed your video and have subscribed. Cheers. Ps I note there are 45 don,t likes. Must have been something you said about the "perfect" Mauser. ha ha.

Referencing your extractor problem - I've fired two Israeli converted Mausers in 7.62 and none of them ever extracted 100% reliably. The last shot usually hung up on the bolt and every so often you'd really need to yank the bolt back to get the extractor to give up the casing. I don't the Israeli's changed the original extractor, so the parts don't talk to each-other quite as well as an original rifle's would.

One of my favorite guns and an excellent video. The tone was quiet , serious, and the subtle drama from the rain broken by the intense action of the weapon was reminiscent of snipers battling in weathered Europe on high alert in a seemingly empty city as troops snuck through it. RC, while I have never owned an Israeli M98, back in the 90s I did have a .308 sporter built on a Chilean M1912 (M98). The thing I remember from my first range session was that while this rifle was actually quite accurate, the magazine would only reliably feed 3 rounds. Cartridges 4 & 5 would seemingly always get mislocated lengthwise, jamming the rifle. The problem was resolved when I purchased a magazine spacer from Brownell's. How did the Israelis remedy this? I note that as the spacer was to the rear of magazine, the clip loader would have been unusable. Do you have this issue? Did they design a "front" spacer? Or just feed by hand?

I think the 7.62 in the K98 Mauser is a perfect match. Yeah, the 8mm is cool and is the original caliber for it. But 7.62 was probably a heck of a lot easier for the Israeli government to acquire. Probably made more sense to go with the NATO round.

+Sanford Hoffman don't get me wrong I totally understand why they did it, and even today to shoot just for fun it's much more easy and convenient to get your hands on 7.62 NATO. It just looks like he's having a tough time operating the bolt which I've never seen with a regular 8mm.

Have a few Mil surps love them my 91/30 my #5 jungle and the Mauser all fun shooters! Keep up the good work!

You got the FN C1 clips to work in the Spanish? That's good to know... They won't work in these large ring mausers - I tried. Unfortunately I gave my 98 mauser clips to a very eager kid thinking I had more (wrong). Yes I have the steel cased ammo. Not sure the Israeli likes them very much. Had a few issues with cartridges popping out of the follower as if this was a push feed. The bolt simply wasn't grabbing them.

I have a bnz 4 marked K98k Israeli conversion. Still bears all the waffenamts, with the exception of the Nazi crest being peened out and a star of David being stamped next to it, on the receiver. Interesting piece of history. I wonder if any of the people forced to build the rifle in Austria made their way to Israel and were one of the very ones converting the rifle they had built?

DOU45 is a weird code. While the Germans did produce the rifle in early 1945 production was limited. The factory is located in the Slovak region (eastern side) of the former Czechoslovakia. Many of the DOU45 rifles were built in 1945 under Russian occupation. The writing on your receiver is consistent with a Russian occupation rifle because the Germans did not use the Czech spelling for cities. Post war Czech rifles are generally better made than last ditch wartime rifles.

It's really hard to say anything bad about a K98 or and Enfield if you've spent time with them but here I go. Sights on the Mauser are not even close to Enfields quality to put a shot on target but the rimmed cartridge is a big negative under battle stress. Both are fine rifles and wouldn't complain about carrying one.

I advisable to use 308 Winchester brass in a 7.62 NATO chamber. Lots of people do it but they are taking risks and really hard on your brass if you reload. NATO chambers are slightly more generous and NATO brass has thicker case walls to compensate. It say it's probably OK if you don't run high pressure ammo... But still...

Don't you find wearing that green stuff about the same as not wearing it. I used to sweat as much wearing and got just as wet as if I had not had it on. Haven't tried a Nagant or Mauser but definitely love the Enfield have a couple of No4s one the (T) and boy do they shoot.

No matter which way you look at it - if you're working in the rain - you're going to get wet. I live in North West BC next to the Pacific. If I waited for good weather to go outside I'd never leave the house.

under 300 meters u can't compare the guns much Cuz at that range even a mosin nagant is as accurate as a mauser. But long range I'd go for mauser. The germans also had better optics. But ya the Enfield had speed.

I think I'd take my No. 5 as my bolt gun to go into battle. Nice and short, 10 round capacity, and the sights are nice. Not a big fan of cock on close bolts but after awhile you don't even notice.

I inherited one of these rifles recently, and I am happy that others take such a keen historical interest in them. My late father served with the South African Defense Forces during the Bush Wars, and as a certified rifleman he carried one of those and brought it to the USA when he married my mother. The piece hasn't been fired in a while, but I fully intend to restore it and keep this legacy piece in shooting condition. Thank you for this informative video. :)

Your Rifle was not having any difficulty extracting... It was not Ejecting... There is absolutely nothing wrong with your Rifle, it works the way it was designed to... It was not Ejecting, because of Shooter Error... The Mauser Bolt is designed to Eject according to the speed and power of the back stroke... You can solve your ejecting issues, simply by working the bolt a wee bit more violently... They are tough Rifles, they are designed for this... You don't have to baby them... P.S. This is a common issue, when Lee Enfield shooters, switch to Mausers... The Lee Enfield has a shorter Bolt Stroke, than a K-98... If I am saving my Brass for Handloading, I deliberately short stroke the Bolt, so that it doesn't Eject, thus I don't have to chase after the spent casings... This works on Lee Enfields, too... P.S. Dry Firing, without Snap Caps, or at least empty brass, is not healthy for your Rifle... Although Dry Firing may be good for business(I'm a Gunsmith), I hate to see such a beautiful Rifle get damaged, unnecessarily... Thanks for the Videos! From a fellow Canuck...

There's some issues with worn extractors that cause weak contact with the ejector resulting in poor ejection. Usually if the last round extracts but doesn't eject it means there is a problem

Except for it's affect on paper/cardboard targets, why not shoot in the rain/snow? These weapons aren't going to melt. I carried M16s or .45s off and on for 20+ years in the States, in the forests of Europe, in the desert. They all came back fine. Adverse weather and darkness are your friends. They'll teach you to be confident and self-reliant, once you get used to them.

Nope 24 is a bit different rifle. At first sight you can see the different top handguards. Also 24 has a straight lever and not the bent one.These are K98 models that were produced or left by the germans at the end of WW2 in Czechoslovakia. They were sold as surplus to Israel and remarked. Later when Israel run out of 8mm ammo and standardized on 7,62NATO they were rebareled.
