After a really busy month meeting deadlines for the build we are taking a day to go ride some trails and swim in the lake. It'll be a much needed day of fun before getting back to work on the deck build. Things start out great but before long a storm rolls in and washes away our progress.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

@@Spaddog Exactly, Erin and Josh work their butts off. Looks "fun" on camera but I'm sure it's ridiculously hard some if not most of the time. And you don't see the home schooling and all of the tedious video editing, etc.

When creating a reality tv show, there’s an entire cast and crew with over a hundred people from preproduction, production, on down the the editing. You’re doing it all and it’s beautiful and brilliant. Bravo! Also, Erin, you are the queen of B roll! Beautifully done!

How can a childhood be any better.home schooled by a true teacher called mom and be raised perfectly on a beautiful farm with animals they can interact with daily anytime they want.4wheelers to ride and adventure through the woods on.its absolutely perfect. And away from all the garbage this country has become lately. Nice to see a sweet family thriving and not having to deal with the nonsense our government is putting our great country through.

That’s funny how things have changed with petrol pumps 😁 when l first started driving, l was at the tail end of petrol and your oils being filled by an attendant. And there was often a mechanic onsite to help with a problem. I like the nostalgia of an old fashioned petrol station. Have a great week 🧡♥️

Quick little trick we use is get clear spray paint and paint over your marks. You can still see them, and they can’t wash away.

As I said in another response, Aquanet hairspray works just as well, is easier to find, and it’s cheaper. Old school carpenter trick.

That's why when deck builders suspect rain, they mark the bracket locations with the start of a drill hole.

Yep. pencil, chalk and ink will wash away, but a half inch hole drilled into concrete... it would take something of biblical proportions to wash that away.

I was born in WV and as a kid we had an IH Scout 4wd. Dad would take us as a family exploring mining trails and even driving up creek beds. That was now over 50 years ago. Those family outings will be memories for you kids for the rest of their lives.

When I was building my cabin I measured everything out, got the post set and went archery hunting in the morning. About 8 I heard someone hammering nails. My brothers, brother-in- law started to put the beams around the posts and got the strings out of the way. It was funny with me re setting some of the sticks, then knocking half the boards off. Then setting the boards by the string. I was going for 12x24 and it was 12.4x24.3 on two of the sides, I did not bother measuring the other two sides. I ended up notching the posts and needed the lines to do my cuts. He had never built anything before and laying the base deck was mandatory. He also took it, as he was being called stupid having to redo all the work he did. Even though I was explaining it and laughing.

While building my first house in 78, I was using Sonneborn brush on waterproofing. I had the front of the house all done when a storm cloud rolled in.When we came back, the only sign of the waterproofing was where it was built up in the drain rock around the foundation. The chalk line we'd snapped to follow was still there.

There are often times when I need surtitles to know what Josh is saying, but it's endearing. After several replays I can usually get it -- context helps! :-) And I don't think I've seen a more perfect team than Erin and Josh. I would suggest putting rock down once you get it all squared and ready to put down the posts. You don’t want water running through the deck and washing away soil. Unless, you’re going to make a solid deck, then you’ll need to slope it just a bit so that water runs off. LOVE all the videos!!!

Lol like every deck ever built has had issues with all the dirt washing out from under it? I've never once see this be an issue.
