It is time to tackle building 5, 20ft beams for our deck. Since we were unable to find 2x10x20ft beams we had to build our own. When things get interesting is when we work together to place the hefty beams. Once completed this will mark the halfway point in our deck build. The goal is to balance completing this project and spending time at the lake with the kids.
Shop Our Apparel: www.bunkerbranding.com/pages/...
We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"

I've been watching you guys through the years you guys done an amazing job on the A-frame house you make me want to build one hopefully it won't take me that long because I don't think I can live in an RV you guys have a good one I hope your deck turns out fantastic like your A-Frame house did and I'd probably use a little bit of glue on those sandwich boards that you use it maybe?

I have been on youtube for many years and I believe this is my first ever comment. I found y'all a couple months back and have since watched every video. I now have my wife hooked. I'm a builder by trade and for the last 8 years have been on the sales side, so my question is unrelated to that. We have the family out for a lake day and we don't get Erin in a bikini?!? I am Jack's dissapoint. Other than that... Rock on! You guys are awesome!

I like how they can make the snide comments to each other and then laugh it off, instead of getting angry. It is a good way to teach the kids that there is no need to get angry over little things. I also notice how well kids respond to their parents when they do not go to public schools and get the rude influence from other students that do not get the same attention from their parents and do what ever they want and get unruly for the attention.

The only thing I would do differently is use polyurethane glue in between the 2x material for the beams. I have been using that for beams for years now, can't prove it works any better than the nail only method, just a comfort thing for me. And it would help with the flex in the middle.
@theElderberryFarmer
@theElderberryFarmer 3 жыл бұрын
Every municipality has different rules and codes regarding posts and beams for decks. When I built my deck in NC, it was required that laminated beams have splices occurring over support posts. Also, any portion of the deck where the finished surface would be more than 4 feet above grade required either knee braces between the posts and the beams, or 2x6 bracing (railroad trestle style) from the bottom of a post to the top of the next post on the outermost edges of the deck. The maximum spans for beams were determined by not only the size of the lumber, but also by the specific species/grade of lumber used. I had to use #1 Southern Yellow Pine 2x10 lumber, 3-ply laminated to get the spans I wanted between posts.

That was a perfect video. Hard work, job successfully done, then great time with the family. I have noticed that home schooled kids are much nicer to their siblings. Interesting.

Everytime I watch your videos I think to myself that it would be awesome to do this. Sooooo I am really thinking about building an A frame house for me and my son and live life off grid and grow our own food. We live in Florida and I miss the mountains. I'm a widower but learned some building skills from my husband And from watching you. This would be a dream come true.
