Do you know where I'm from? excuse you. My country is quite developed in many areas, unfortunately undeveloped in some because politicians are very corrupt and take all of the money for themselves instead of investing in the country's infrastructure. You are the one who's uneducated if you didn't know that already. A country is not a "dumphole" because of lack of educated people. There is clearly tons of uneducated people in the US like yourself. Does that make the US a dumphole? not at all. do some research before you type that cowshit.

char jl what I mean is that after speaking to so many US citizens who haven't been close to anyone going through this, I realized that they think immigrating here and working here legally is easy, they're always like "why don't people just do it legally?" As if it were that simple. I feel that Joanna was definitely funny in her delivery but also very poignant in showcasing the difficulties.

Another interesting thing that is happening with migration from the US to Mexico, is that less qualified people are coming to take jobs that more qualified and better prepared Mexicans could be taking, but since the companies are American, they prefer to appoint someone from their already established branches in the U.S. rather than "risk" Mexican people not understanding how they want things done. I've seen this in at least 3 companies I've done work for, and one of my best friends is actually a high-level executive that was sent here by her company to "supervise" the startup of their Mexican offices. I brought this up with a very nice southern lady I had the pleasure to interpret for, and she was astounded. she was surprised to learn that the actual job stealing is happening in the exact opposite way that they've been telling us.

That's a tough question.....how do we feel about immigration in the US?...Well.... In my case, I really don't give it a f**k. Really. Years ago, I applied to a simple touristic visa so I could visit a friend living in Florida (who lives legally there with his family, by the way) for just ONE week, and despite being a federal government employee with a rather good salary, single, having my own apartment and showing my annual taxes declaration, I was REFUSED to get the visa. The reason? The dumb interviewer gave me a crappy piece of paper saying that I could be a "potential illegal immigrant". What the f**k???? Why would I want to live there if I have a government job, a home, lots of responsabilities and an ok financial and legal life here??? I PAID a lot of money for that application, spent an ENTIRE day arranging documents and copies and another ENTIRE waiting for that boring interview just to be screwed by a dumb, childish U.S. government employee? I even demanded to ve interviewed in ENGLISH so I could make very clear that I was just traveling for leisure and nothing more. Later, some people said that my visa was probably refused because the guy thought I was of Arab origin (at that time I had a beard) and a potential terrorist. That's just...nuts. Since then, I lost every bit interest in visiting the U.S. I know that most U.S. Americans may be nice, friendly people and that the country has many great places to explore....but I just can't stand how annoying and real jerks the U.S. officials or government employees can be. Don't they want me to visit and spent my money in your country? Then I will never care about visiting it and I will spent my money elsewhere.

My ancestors came to the U.S. from Germany, Sweden, the UK, Ireland, and Russia through Ellis Island. They came here because of poverty and war, and they worked hard in farms and factories. Now, my family is college educated, successful in their careers in teaching, finance, trade jobs, and corrections. I am also going to the university for borh Geography and Spanish, with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems and natural and environmental systems. I am also doing buisness and translation for Spanish. I would like to go to grad school and be a forcaster/meteorologist. None of us would be here without immigration. If you come here, and want to work hard at whatever job you can get, you should be able to be here. You should also be able to care for your elderly family members, and disabled family when you come here. There is plenty of the U.S. to go around, and immigration actually helps the economy. Plus, we have messed with the rights of people in other countries, so it is only fair that we let those people come here for a better life. I WILL HOLD THE LIGHT AT THE GOLDEN DOOR AND OPEN THE DOOR FOR YOU, NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, AS LONG AS YOU ARE A GOOD PERSON! Immigrants are not a strain on the economy. U.S. Corporations exploiting immigrants in other countries, not paying their fair share in taxes, moving to other countries while getting U.S. benefits without hiring U.S. workers, and them keeping wages low are the strains.

Well, to be honest I am an immigrant as well as my parents. They sat us down and walked step by step what the plan would be in case they get deported. I have a little brother the age of 11 and a sister who would fall into my custody. It's so scary and sad that we have to have talks like this. Or wonder if I myself might get deported. Unfortunately no one will be able to understand the sacrifices our parent's or families have endured to get here. I was the first in my direct family to graduate from high school and go to college. I am hear to make my parent's proud and for them to see that there sacrifices were not in vain. Simple as that. Thank you for this topic. I appreciate someone having a voice! ❤ ❤

I don't know if you would read this but, you forgot that in order to get the H1B you need to enter a lottery system too, is not enough to have a job offer. I'm Venezuelan too and I did my PhD in USA with a fellowship from the USA government and after many interviews most rejections were because I wasn't an American citizen (I guess applying for jobs during the most controversial presidential election year in USA wasn't good as well). At the end I started applying for jobs around the world and I got an offer from Europe ( I'm not EU citizen, just Venezuelan). I left US on January 11th 2017, I like my new home (specially the 24 days of vacation per year :)) I guess long story short USA immigration sucks for everyone even for people with PhD however, is not the only country in the planet to offer a better quality of life. At the end of the day everything happens for a reason. Sorry for the long comment :)

It's still better than to live in your country. For example: I'm from Venezuela and I had to immigrate to Chile.

Even the lottery system isn't as easy as winning it. That is how my family came to the US, but we had to go through years of interviews, my parents had to present college degrees, and have someone who would sponsor them once we got here. Not to mention a good amount of money for all the legal stuff and to be able to afford all travel and stay expenses. My parents had to go into debt, even more so than they already were, to be able to immigrate. And if they didn't have all of that, even though they "won" the lottery, they would have been denied. I truly believe people need to do a little more reading and have a open mind to really see how "easy" it is to come to the US legally. It's not.

Here's a few more depressing facts about the H1B visa: -In addition to paying thousands of dollars on an employee's visa, sponsoring companies can only apply for them on April 1st (unless they are universities or research nonprofits applying for hughly specialized faculty or research positions). - H1B Applications are also subject to a LOTTERY, because out of 240k applications, they only accept 60k. Oh, and if applications are denied, sponsors DO NOT GET A FULL REFUND ON THEIR FEES. -If the application is approved, said employee can't start employment until October 1st. (Interview scenario: "How soon can you start working?" "Ummm... In 9 months?" "Get the hell out of my face!") - Lastly, if things don't work out for the employee at the company, and they want to seek employment elsewhere, the new employer must submit a whole new application and pay EXACTLY THE SAME FEES. Because the H1B visa is liked to the employer; not the employee. Oh, and if the employee is let go/fired/downsized, in addition to losing their employment and visa, they are forced to leave the country IMMEDIATELY. No grace period. Otherwise they risk not ever getting any kind of visa in the future. Thanks, America. Love, A disgruntled Colombian who, despite having a master's degree and miraculously getting her H1B visa approved to work for a non-profit, found herself without a job and the possibility of ever finding employment due to your unreasonable immigration policies. I am sorry for wanting to steal a fundraising job from all the millions of Americans dying to work in nonprofit. My bad.

Well I moved to America when I was like 5 or 6 and my senior year of high school when I was 18 in 2019 we got a letter basically saying we waited years and the answer is no. The entire time we were legally waiting for a status change from a visa to a greencard was then considered illegal because the greencard wasn’t approved so(we didn’t know this at the time)....they said the legal thing to do was leave ASAP( unless you had enough money to pay for some big shot lawyer which we didn’t have and there were still no guarantees).I was 3 months away from graduation so we decided to leave after I graduated. In that time a letter came telling us we had to go to court the next year. Basically leave, but stay because if you don’t show up to court you’ll be deported. Didn’t make sense my mom was scared we all decided to avoid upsetting the government and leave like we were originally told to do and bam I was deported and I wasn’t even in the country. Had to leave behind my entire life, home, scholarships, future and everything else. This is the for dummies version. Also my moms side is Spanish so we went to Spain but my parents separated around February 14th 2018. ( only know that because it was around 2 weeks before the shooting. I went to Marjory stoneman douglas...) soooooo my dad can’t go to Spain but he can’t go to Venezuela either because...i don’t need to explain this. In other words I also got ripped apart from my father. My future as a paramedic or combat medic was destroyed. My home family and friends were also ripped from my life. And everything I thought I knew changed. THANKS IMMIGRATION for not only destroying my life and future after already recovering from a school shooting, but you also missed out on someone who was being recruited by all the branches of your military after spending years in the jrotc program volunteering at hospitals and about to go into emergency medicine for your citizens. Trust me if it were for the money, those wouldn’t be my goals.

I constantly fight with my father over this stuff, I know he was still a kid when my grandparents brought the family from Mexico, but his conservative ideas confuse and upset me at times. It's a back and forth of "your family came for a better life why shouldn't others do the same" and "well we came the legal way so should they." Like the process is the same and not even crazier then when they came over in the 1960's. 😧

Yeah basically he's ok with immigrants and immigration but they should come legally. He's a supporter of deporting illegal immigrants because them and their children are taking away money from the government through federal programs and the school system. My dad's family is the exact same way! They came here legally but that was a long time ago and things were different. It makes me really angry to have them condescend people who come here desperately and illegally. My mom illegally crossed the boarder. It's not a piece of cake and she didn't have free handouts. She (14 at the time) and her family worked the fields as soon as they arrived. The hypocrisy and judgement coming from the latino/Hispanic community is always baffling.

My husband is Venezuelan and is now a US citizen and also is in the US Navy. Our heart breaks daily for the situation going on in Venezuela and how there is so little we can do to help. We have petitioned for my in-laws to be able to come here but the process is so long and is very expensive (not right at all). Although not allowing immigration it's a problem in my point of view, the necessity of people to immigrate it's a much bigger trouble, it's sad that some people have to immigrate to have a better life without having the same opportunity in their home country (some times being fault of the colonial countries which are the same that don't allow them to immigrate, some times not), if only the wealthiest countries tried to solve it (that will definitely not happen unfortunately lol). Sorry for my English 😅

Moby Nick ...I think the Native Americans would like their land to go back to how it was before it was invaded and brutally taken away from them. But, the United States would not be what it is today without immigrants, so you're right, the so-called melting pot that prides itself on paper as having open arms to care for those in need, should probably actually practice what it preaches. Then again, civilizations come and go, and the United States is not exempt from that reality. The values and strengths which made the US a glowing star, are being tested, if not being torn apart by ignorance, greed and hate of its citizens, politicians, and by the wealthy. The United States is changing, and not for the better. When Nazi propaganda is not condemned by the leaders, but instead boosted, it's a red flag. When an overwhelming number of citizens care more about the image and respect of nation's flag, than about the values and rights of what the flag represents, it's a red flag.

Moby Nick it’s different, when the white people came here, USA was by the great country it is right now, in fact it was a very new land and the people that came to USA built the amazing country it is right now, so therefore there is not point in trying to focus on something that first, happened a long time ago and second, it happened when USA was brand new, they were all poor people but with amazing ideas and willing to evolve which is very different than what immigration is nowadays!

Awesome video!!! I can relate to everything that is said here. I am Mexican and an immigrant who came to the US this year. My process started with a k1 visa (aka fiancé visa). I met my husband, an American citizen almost three years ago, we had a long distance relationship for a while, we both tried to visit each other every two or three months and when we decided to get married we had to question what was for us the easiest way to apply for residency. We did some research, and it turned out the k1 visa was our easiest route. Instead of planning a wedding like every other couple, we invested our money and planned and prepared for my relocatiom. We applied for the K1 visa exactly on July 6th 2016. The paperwork, forms and paychecks had to go through several offices first before they called me for an interview in my home country. After months of paperwork, a very easy case in record time. Almost exactly 6 months. It was easy because Ive had a tourist visa my entire life and always used it with respect to this country, we had several proof that our relationship was real and not a scam, and I had a carreer, an amazing job and my entire family in Mexico City. I moved to the US in February and the "perks" of the K1 visa is that it gives the beneficiary exactly 90 days to marry the US who sponsored it and apply for green card. So, we married in March and sent our application for Green Card in early May. I don't know how time works for USCIS, but it is really slow. I just recently was approved for work permit and advance parole to leave the country last week (Sept 12th) and this is just the beginning. My actual green card can take more than year, maybe more. It just took the government more that 6 months since I moved to authorize permission to work and leave the country, so was like in limbo without being able to do the most simple things like driving. And, after I get my green card (who knows when), it turns out that it is conditional for the first two years, because my imigrant status depends entirely on my marriage succeeding. We started this process more than one year ago, and we are not even halfway through it. I am starting to have a normal life this days trying to find a job and getting a drivers license, but things just go slow, there is also a big proce tag in this entire process and that uncomfortable feeling of always having to prove that your relationship is real because the officers have to assume that it is a scam. I still think coming to this country is one of the best decisions I've ever made, not because this country is amazing, or because it is a land of opportunities (Again, I was fortunate enough to have a nice life, career, friends, family and safety in Mexico, something not everyone can say) but because I did it for the most amazing person I've ever met, my husband. He is one of this amazing American citizens that are still out there fighting for what is right for this piece of land and it's people, and he gives me reason to believe that as long as we are still fighting for what is fair, things will be alright.

Well put, I would only add, as a former H1B holder, that there is a quota (65K Regular H1B Quota ...+ 20k Master’s H1B Quota ( Only US Masters Degree Eligible)) and you have to apply to be in a lottery to get selected. You have to apply the day that lottery opens April 1st. You can only apply that day cause it will fill up within hours. After that, the H1B is only good for 3 years, meaning you need to renew it for another 3 years and thats it (no more renewals). For the renewal, i had to go to Juarez (closest US embassy for me) because you can not get your new visa stamp within the US even if you had already the H1B for the 3 first years.

I started dating a guy when I was working in Asia back in 2010. When I came back to the United States we figured the next step would be for him to come over here to visit and for him to meet my family. Didn't happen. We tried for months for him to get a simple visa for him to come for a short stay. He was young and single and didn't have a job offer in this country. He wasn't looking for one either since if things worked out between us we'd both agreed that I would be the one to move to his country. Everyone told us that pretty much guaranteed he'd have no chance of getting approval. Looks like they were right, because it never happened. The only chance we saw that could work was the 90 day fiance visa. We were at the point where we seriously considered it, but even with the freedom to break up at the end of 90 days I felt extremely uncomfortable with the pressure that count-down clock would put on our relationship. It was a Catch-22. We didn't want to commit to getting married until we'd spent more time together, but the US government wouldn't let us spend more time together until we'd committed to getting married. The warped irony is that some of these same bureaucrats were warning me about people that would marry citizens from countries that are difficult to enter in order to fast-track their own visa process. And yes, that kind of thing does happen. The obvious advice to give a person would be to get to know a person very, very well before marrying them. But in the next breath they tell their own citizens that the whole 'getting to know you' period of their relationship is going to have to be limited mainly to email, international phone calls, and webcams; then they can get engaged.

Hhhmm I don't know. Considering that many countries in Latin America are not in the best economical state, if an immigrant has to chose another place to go to which it has the actual money to pay (if they have any), the most REASONABLE choice is the place that's better economically AND CLOSEST to where you are. So yeah, if I'm in Mexico for example, I'm pretty sure it's a lot easier to "try" to get in the US than making it to Canada or Australia.

This young lady is great, just found her on youtube. I will have to say I disagree with her stance on immigration though. As one professor had pointed out, many immigrants are people that have the ability to make change in their own country, i.e. educated, hard working and intelligent. When an influx of these people immigrate to another country, they take their shared abilities with them. It would be beneficial to stay and help their communities they grew up in to advance and grow. Instead, they leave behind those less capable or unwilling to make changes. I have met many from other countries here in the U.S. They are proud of their country (as they should be), they fly the flag of their homeland, but, they say they only travel back now and then just to visit. If you want change, if you want to protect your heritage, then stay and do something about it. I don't say this to be mean, I say this as an American Patriot, that would fight for the freedom and values gained by those that have preceded me in this great nation. I don't believe immigration should cease, it should be limited. No country would be able to support mass migration, just look at the problems being created in Europe.

What if your country is in a state that you could no longer do anything to help it? What if you are young and talented but you have no opportunities to forget about helping your country but to help yourself to build a life? Suppose you did build a life, you worked hard for it and all, what if You'd already known that you, that life won't be there after a couple of years? It's easier to being patriotic when your country isn't in deep shit and you're not in danger most of the time. Nobody would like to leave their country, family and friends behind if they'd have any other option trust me on that. I'm not living in US, I don't even know if I'd want to but I can totally understand those educated people who would like to immigrate to other countries, as my country is not a place to live happily anymore too. They just want to have a life, be away from war or violence. It's easier to tell these things when you didn't have any problems like other countries all your life.

Nooo @TheSamapeti hasta cuando la insistencia? "America" en ingles siempre ha sido "The United States Of America". People like you who always seem to argue this shit gets annoying really fast. And what makes you think Americans are cocky? Just because they call themselves "Americans"? Congratulations you get the Darwin award, my friend.

Not mention, the birth rate is quite low here and young immigrants could help to shore up social security.

The part about the lottery system is so true though! My aunt's family, who was trying to immigrate to this country legally because by cousin is mentally handicapped, gave up the hope of trying to win it after 20 years of applying because it just seemed impossible.

... the entirety of America wants people who can actually help the country grow and not just support people who need their help. I'm talking about the entire government, not just the Republicans. Democrats would've done the exact same thing too. Also, you seem to be forgetting that America is just one country, as is Venezuela or Britain or Canada (where I am from). What I'm saying is it’s like you're making your country a heaven of sorts for the hell that is the rest of the world. Maybe it could be possible to get people to work hard in their own countries to make it so their kids can have the type of quality of life as we have in North America. Basically, other countries won't get any better if everyone is running from them to us. I think (my opinion) that people should work at changing what they've got into something that they want instead of trying to get what other people have . **EDIT** please read the comments. people who know better than me explain stuff really well.

Are you familiar with the monroe doctrine? The US at one point in it's history told Europe to get the f out of the Americas (north and south america) and that anything going on in the Americas was it's business and it's business alone. Well you made that call turns out with that comes responsibility. Oh and we're also asking you to take refugees from wars you started, how terrible of us you know we Europeans are taking refugees from wars you lot started right?

So I guess none of your ancestors had to “run“ from their home country to North America??? If it was just about people working hard, it would not be so difficult to have a nice developed country. Do you think you're working harder than the children in Bangladesh who make your clothes for virtually no money?! People running from shit to North America is how the U.S. and Canada came into existence and ever since the U.S. has just caused more shit in the rest of the world.

The funny thing about the lottery is that it's for people from countries that haven't sent that many people to the US in the last decade so if you're from say... Mexico, you can't even put your name in the running.

Read the news... People are trying but with the army against you it's practically impossible... Even in the US if you had all the gun owners vs the US army... the US army would sweep the floor with them

It's sad because the countries of south america has so much potential, and the people are giving up... I'm Brazilian and the situation is so hard which the easy way is give up and search another country. But I understand the North americans because a lot of foreign people really can change their culture.. one thing they can do is help the countries If the life is going well in Venezuela, for example, no one will want to go

Well, I'm a former illegal immigrant to the States. I lived there for 7 years on an expired tourist visa. I never committed a crime and , yes, I paid my taxes. I would have liked to stay but I didn't find a legal way to do so. Eventually I left because I was lucky enough to have a support system in my country of birth which allowed me to start over. I would say most people don't have that.

Just for perspective, immigration to Canada, USA, Australia, and similar countries is just as hard, if not harder sometimes. Immigration these days is just difficult.

Thanks Joanna for opening the discussion, I wish we latinoamericanos, those who live abroad but specially those who don't have the urgent need to emigrate, could made more of an effort to discuss ways to bring back dignity and quality of life to our countries so nobody that doesn't want to emigrate has to do it, and especially not in such vulnerable conditions.
