Man that is truly sad, you're right. She's grown up (I'm guessing) with decades of racism, where the idea of one "superior" race was more accepted than it is today. And to an extent, I get it. The messaging during those times were unforgiving. The history of the world is what it is because of colonialism, leave alone Mexico's history. It benefited those in ultimate power to enforce a hierarchy that disrespected natives and African-descended slaves. You have to continue to firmly educate and love her, by interrogating why she truly thinks the way she does, because frankly when people are of that mindset they just don't listen to marginalised POC experiences or even repress/excuse their own experiences if they're POC themselves - their empathy and critical thinking on this subject is not quite there yet. It's easy for them to be dismiss that there's anything wrong or get defensive. Continue to be an ally by doing this emotionally hard work (because the mistreated cannot bear this burden alone) and you'll be helping to enact positive change in the world. Good luck.

@Analphabet Many times older people in Latin America tend to have these ideas, even if they are dark-skinned, they have the thought that being lighter-skinned is to be prettier, and that idea is because many of these people were discriminated against for having an indigenous appearance and many grew up with the thought that being light-skinned and with European traits was 'better'. I think that's why a lot of people have that thought.

I'm Panamanian, so Spanish is my first language, and even though I can communicate perfectly in English, I do have my accent. Long story short: I used to work at a Call Centre, and One guy from the US Called and asked for my name. So I said: My name is Eric. But he said that that's impossible and my real name might be Enrico. He also told me that his brother's name is Eric but his brother is white and tall... 'Till this day, I don't know how he was able to see me over the phone, and for the record, I'm blonde, and 6'4." Another time, I woman asked for my full name and looked for me on Facebook. But she couldn't believe it was me because there was a white man in the picture... Americans believe that all Spanish Speakers look like Aztecs. Maybe we should blame Hollywood. They have no idea that Argentinians and Spaniards are very much white and they can also speak Spanish.

I am of South Asian origin and colourism is also a huge issue in my ethnic group. The cruelty of this mindset is unspeakable. One of the reasons why I became a beauty writer was because my childhood friend who was quite dark-skinned rejected a compliment I gave about her looks. I envied her perfect skin, slimness and cute nose, and I told her that she was pretty. I emphasise: She was pretty! She looked at me and said that she would never be considered pretty because she was not as light as me and another girl of South Asian origin in our class. I was shocked and told my mom. Mom was very matter-of-fact about how cruel the culture can be and that is why she tried her best to raise my brother and I with a more open minded approach. I never forgot my friend's sadness. Now, when I write beauty stories I strive to include shades for all South Asian skin tones and insert compliments, so that I am inclusive and reinforce this truth: all skin tones are lovely and pretty. It would sadden me if I wrote a story for South Asians and someone felt less than or left out. I despise colourism.

Excellent comment. My best friend is Vietnamese. People from her family tend to be on the lighter side, but can get much darker if they spend time in the sun. When she went to visit her extended family in Vietnam, she said her cousins tried so hard to cover themselves whenever they would go out because they were obsessed with being as white as possible. My friend would just walk around in a tank and shorts, not giving a shit (it's HOT there!), and they would ask her, "Aren't you worried you'll get darker?!" She was like uh...no? I thought it was sad, people denying themselves basic comfort in hot weather just because being white is considered more beautiful.

im a pasty pale mexican with blue eyes/ black hair, I no longer live in the US anymore but when i did, the anglos thought i was one of them until they heard my very hispanic last name. I would listen to them make some subtle racist remarks about hispanics and blacks and I always got the feeling they did that bc they thought of me as not being "actually latino". I eventually left that friend group and joined the black/hispanic kids lol. (the school was majority hispanic (of all shades/colors) and the white kids alI had their own group and so did the asians, ) I believe white latinos definitely have privilege because we can blend in with the anglo american peeps. Afro latinos also blend in with african americans. So we're not as "singled out" or the target of an attack because people assume were not immigrants. Americans are OBSESSED with race. Im not even exaggerating. Unlike Latin American countries in which the people identify as their nationality first, in the US, people identify as their race first. That's why you can slice through the racial tension with a butter knife. That's why the country is so divided.

I have a lot of stories about colorism. I'm from Argentina. One of my aunts was born with dark complexion, and the sister of her father wanted to put bleach on her hair and skin to clear it, when she was a baby. The grandmother of my neighbor use to tell her that if she drank a lot of milk, she will get whiter. My mother is half aborigin, so her skin is dark, and when her sister was a baby, her aunts thougt that she was dirgthy so they tried to brush her skin in process to clean her

Like, when someone says "America was founded on slavery" it confuses me because, do you mean "it was built on the backs of slaves" or do you mean, "They came to America just own some slaves"? Cuz it most definitely was not the latter. I just want to be historically accurate here.

I hate to see how central America is dying due to the same reasons applied in different nations, if you ask most of Guatemalans who support officialism they don't care about Honduras they don't care about Nicaragua, they don't care about el Salvador, they just care about Belize, they want their own country's glory ("") mainly inforcing laws that do not include everybody and aims to people above middle class.

One privilege that I've noticed I've had even more during these past few years is birthright citizenship here in the US. As a woman of color growing up in the US I never considered myself a privileged person until I started college. I grew up in a Mexican community, so we all had a very similar lifestyle; however, I started noticing how it was easier for me to apply for things like financial aid while some of my friends where DACA students. I noticed things that required anything to do with laws were just easier for me. I've also had a recent feeling of this privelege while dating my current boyfriend. He was born and raised in India, and he's currently working here on an H1B visa. He's applied to get his visa renewed right before the quarantine, but now with Trump considering a ban on immigration, he has to worry about what to do if his renewal is denied. He also constantly lives in fear about breaking laws or regulations since any police record would badly hurt his visa status. So small things I wouldn't think about like driving past the speed limit or j-walking are constantly on his mind. The more time I spend with people of different cultures and backgrounds, it becomes clearer and clearer the amount of privilege I really have

I’m also from a mixed family- my stepdad was black, my sister is half Venezuelan and half black and because of my dad (stepdad), I have a lot of black family. I’ve seen their struggles and compared to me it’s nothing. All we can do is support each other and stand up for one another when needed.

Last year I was in San Fran and I asked a black police officer where a street was.I was utterly taken aback when he made a joke about black solidarity.I just felt like the “ us and them” thing is a lot more pronounced in the US.Ofcourse it’s very clear here in the UK too ,except,in the US I can feel this poisonous feeling of “us and them” lurking in the ether.

I’ve got quite white skin bc my mums from northern Spain and my dads from London and you won’t even understand how many times people call me coloniser and shit like that and I can tell you for certain each time it’s been either from a native of the country I live in or an Asian person, but I was born there none of my ancestors ever came here and for an Asian person born in the country I live in would make them just as much of a coloniser as I am 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ doesn’t really make any sense right? Also we have a bit of a racist government bc the natives get their COVID vaccines first and get priority over certain things. I have absolutely no problem with the natives I just don’t understand the governments way of going about it. They could be encouraging them instead of giving them the rights to have their own vaccine clinics.

Since when did being white require you to speak English? The color of your skin does not determine the language you should speak. There are different colored people speaking English in England and yet they aren't asked why they're not white. In fact, a white person is considered to be from Europe which has tons of languages and it's also a very loose definition because I've seen many Europeans who have darker skin pigmentation than Latinos because they're mixed with African and other nationalities. So answer this question for me, what is a European?

I agree Josh Wynn. I don't feel that I should be ashamed to be white. I did nothing to people of colour. While growing up (in Hungary), I haven't even met an African Americans or Latinos and as far as I know we didn't have African slaves in our history. We only had gypsies in my country that I grew up with, some were civilized, some weren't, but that goes to white people as well. Now I live in Australia, were we have Aboriginal people and the colour makes no difference in how I treat them. If a person is decent with me, I'm decent with them. As a matter of fact, I had more bad experiences with white people than dark ones, so I don't really understand people who judge dark skinned people or treat them as a lesser human being.

Some of the Mexican and Central American immigrants to the Bay Area are, like, *super* rural. They come from some little village and know about their home region and their country but very little about the rest of the world. So for example I've met immigrants here who didn't know what a Puerto Rican is, complimented me on speaking such good Spanish and asked me where in Mexico my parents were from. Don't overestimate how common this sort of thing is. Many come from larger, more cosmopolitan cities, or have lived in the USA longer, and are thus a lot more worldly.

Asian like to have lighter skin because it symbolizes affluence,. Having light skin meant you could afford to stay in side and not be out in the sun all day ( like an office job) where as poorer people typically worked in the fields, and did manual labour jobs which meant a lot of sun exposure, hence darker skin.

I think “privilege” changes with where you’re at and who’s around you. I’m mestiza but have very light skin and an Italian last name. Most people think I’m Russian or Armenian or just American (white). I had issues in school with other Latinos (mostly Mexican ) kids who were very racist against me (they thought I was Russian) and would speak about me in Spanish not thinking I knew what they were saying. I kept it that way, I wanted to know what people were saying about me and their deep dark secrets lmaoo! I was denied job interviews because they wanted someone who spoke Spanish. When I told them I knew how to speak Spanish, they said they needed native speakers and literally ignored me. same happened in a mostly African American neighborhood where I asked for an application and I was told they weren’t hiring. Man right behind me asked the same thing and was happily given one! Of course, this happens a LOT to darker skinned people, but let’s not pretend it doesn’t go both ways!

Good Job with the vlog! I am of Mexican descent and a fourth-generational Latino. The only place where I experienced my culture was at church, which was a Spanish speaking Methodist Church that was established in the early 1900's. My parents never taught us Spanish because they felt we needed to be strong in one language, so they went with English. My mother continued to make Mexican food, but she also made American standards as well. I was always the only Latino in my classes, but I never felt out of place. My friends never said any racial slurs to me or made me ever feel different. Could be I was with them from kindergarten up to high school. My childhood was very near perfect. I was born with a natural tan but light hair that was blonde before it got darker? I honestly have felt very fortunate in that I was raised how I was. I didn't have any problems at school until middle school, which is when other latino kids told me I should not be with the white kids? I explained to them that I was raised with them, we all grew up together. Then they would call me names that I didn't understand? By high school I was already feeling kind of like I didn't fit in any place? So now this school was really anglo, but I didn't grow up with them? So I had to make friends the regular way. After graduation I was back to normal for me. I've learned that my sisters and I should just consider ourselves fortunate in that my family tried to give us a good life. I learned Spanish later when I worked as a teacher at a local elementary school which was 98% Hispanic/Latino? Sometimes I kind of feel like I've had two lives going on at the same time. My mother being from Kansas and living on a farm, she taught us about the mid-west culture. I am very proud to say that I am of Mexican descent, and that my heritage of being American goes far back. Now, as a older adult I have met many other hispanics that have been fully assimilated as well. We're out there, we just blend I guess. I even feel that today when our differences become foreign and different to the dominant culture, problem can arise. That is up for academic discussion...Thank you and keep up the good work!

Young Chicanos don't know that most of them at 14 would be probably be working in Mexico, instead of studying for free like in Gringolandía; where they earn how to keep ppl of different backgrounds from being friends.

Lol omg I was just talking to my friend about this when it comes to Asian Latinos....(I obviously am neither, but still!). Idk...I just noticed it a lot when I went to Costa Rica and Asian Latinos were discriminated against but so were Black/darker skinned Latinos (Nicaraguans, people from Limón, who are also people usually people from the Caribbean or Nicaragua). So it really made me wonder what people expected a Latino to look like. I say the same when it comes to the black community. Like if dark skins are bad and light skins are considered “too white”, what is a black person supposed to look like? Colorism within communities of color is interesting and weird all at the same time. Because really if you think about it if we all go to America where people hate you just for being a minority, colorism kinda doesn’t seem that important anymore. **runs away because I may have said something truthful but I’m also an awkward person who doesn’t have the Spanish level yet to fight with people who might call me a pendeja**

Their goverment is another point of why the discrimination, but we should learn to separate the persons from the goverment running or ruining their country And about asians... well they come from a cultural background so different than ours, they usually don't speak the language so that is a huge barrier and if you come as warm and welcoming but they don't respond to it you start to feel discourage to getting to know them

The "public" image (media, government, etc.) of Latinx countries is usually white or light skin.Hence, why people associate latinx to white/lighter skin. I think one of the way to remedy to that, is by starting to label Haiti, the first black republic and a french-speaking country, latinx (latinx is the gender-neutral version of Latino and I use it cuz I'm lazy). If latinxs begin to consider Haitians as latinx and if Haitians consider themselves latinx, people will stop thinking that: 1) Latino is a race; 2) Black people can't be latino; 3) Black latinos don't exist.

Ok here is the confusing part, I'm also a white venezuelan who got to live racism both from government officials (institutional racism) and people of color, who are the majority in Venezuela, when I was a kid they would say racist jokes about my skincolor, and then when I grew up I got kidnapped by corrupt policemen because they assumed I was rich because of my skin color, and then got beat up and called racist slur like "Gringuito de mierda maricon", so I can tell you about REAL racism first hand, but still you think I have "White Privilege"?? This is just cultural marxist propaganda Joanna, don't apologize for being white, and trust me, thes days it is IMPOSSIBLE not to offend anyone, getting offended is a choise.

I’m white Venezuelan as well and I was discriminated in Venezuela by my skin color. In Venezuela we are 40% of whites but we’re discriminated by some of the other 60% of mixed race people. I hate when people say that I’m too white to be Venezuelan, then I reply: “ I would like you to go back in time and tell that to Simon Bolivar”.

My privelege is different. I’m from the Caribbean. I’m a shapely, brown skinned, curly haired, mixed girl and that alone is privilege for me on my island because those characteristics are aesthetically desired, if I were lighter skinned, I would have more privelege but being brown skinned and obviously mixed is an advantage for me because people find it exotic. Which I think is different in the states where I won’t be considered multiracial but black.

HolaGranel Views, the new terms in the agenda are "colorism" and "white passing" needed because they wrote themselves into a corner when they redefined racism to exclude the very same so called oppressed minorities from being marginalized by each other in other words being racist to each other since racism goes every which way, but since that would mean that the "f wipipo" narrative is also racist and that's inconsistent.

Bc many Americans are tired of being treated differently just because of traits they were born with. All people are saying is to recognize these differences, recognize why everyone is treated differently, learn from each other, and continue to grow. Americans have BEEN obsessed for a while now but are only being heard now bc of social media PLUS it’s ridiculous that it’s still a topic of discussion in 2018.

LadyLal It's crazy how such a developed and cultural country such as the U.S. have those kind of issues. Actually it's more about the content. Joanna's videos on Vivaporub, the Trump election, Chile are funny because they're funny, and I wouldn't mind if it was a dark latina doing it. However, when you go back from being funny to just be entirely political or speaking about American race standards that doesn't fit Latin America's approach on race, then we have a problem.

@@PaulyWally30 It depends... can't speak for any other countries but in Argentina people reject indigenous people, mestizos and black people quite a bit. Even Europeans. They will be nice to everybody but even if you have lived there for a long time/ are of partial AR descent, talk like an Argentinian, have their mannerisms, customs etc. they will never see you as one of their own. And in Brazil everybody's nice to everybody and pretty united, but they still use words that aren't very respectful, like Chinese for someone of Korean/Japanese descent or the equivalent of the N word for black people. They don't mean it in a bad way, but they use it.
