Button box controllers are evolving and these days you can get into SOCD shortcuts and button only gameplay through DIY or products like the MPress by Paradise Arcade! Let’s check it out!
Thanks to Paradise Arcade for providing the controller for this video. All opinions expressed in the video are my own. The text annotations are info I received when I emailed PAS after the video shoot with my questions. I’ve used the YT “paid promotion” overlay for transparency but as always, I was not paid monetarily to make the video.
Edit: during the video I described gamer finger buttons as concave but I meant “convex”.

@@VladQuake yup. They went against practicality. I think hitbox did as well. Arcade sticks are gigantic cause they house the joystick. No joystick, no need for giant box to house the insde of a keyboard

I emailed them yesterday and they are currently in stock. That might change soon though because of this video. Maybe if you order one choose some non-default colors and switches to avoid low stock options.

The micro is the way to go, the MPress just has weird buttons IMO they don’t feel like tactical presses. The micro has the true feel of button presses. The concave of the micro would be a turn off for people but they are actually working on making buttons for that purpose. Best 200 I spent IMO

Really wanted the MPress but since they’ve been out of stock, I ended up getting the Hitbox. Hopefully I’ll be able to grab one eventually, they’re the best looking buttonbox on the market.

Some padding on the bottom is recommended if your playing on your lap. The plexi is very slippery

I use a Hitbox modded Quanba Obsidian, and have been planning to build a custom button box for a while. This looks amazing! Would love to hear more about those "swivel extenders" (9:43) though, as the Obsidian has trained me to have somewhat of a wide stance while playing.

I don't mind it being a bit thicker if I can fit an actual lever in it. But damn, this is really well-built. The buttons sound thocky, little to no hollow sound, good for posture too! Would be awesome if they include a non-slip sticker to optionally stick underneath.

Corner screw holes are perfect for 40mm feet... and we have a non slip mat we are working on... I honestly thought this would be more of an issue, and it had been for a few, but it's not as slippery as you would think.

Really nice controller. How would you compare the hitbox to an usual arcade stick in terms of adaptability? I play with stick or pad, depending on the game, but I always thought about trying a hitbox.

I've always wanted one of these!! The low tone sound is making me want to try it. As a hitbox user though, I'm not a huge fan of the lack of wrist space

They have a version with hot swappable switches? I got mine in like the second wave after release. But I was pretty sure all versions were soldered ones. Ooo nice just looked and they did add Hotswap as an option and alot of colors

ive been getting into keyboard building, and i didnt getcwhy no ones done this yet, itd be so easy to make a simple pcb for a hitbox with hotswap sockets like they do with keyboards

how did you get screw ons on a qanba obsidian ( i have the pearl) I've wanted to put screw ons in my qanba but its kinda tricky to get the triangle buttons

Light actually moves slower in glass than in air, causing it to have a different angle in different volumes like glass

This would be really cool with some sort of removable joystick/more thickness for people who like joysticks more. Especially for people who travel frequently.

they could so easily make it a couple inches less wide, i feel. snackbox micro seems to be more ergonomic because your wrists aren't resting on it. Plus you'd be able to fit it easier in a backpack.

Can I change the buttons to Sanwa or anything else if I end up not liking Paradise's buttons? Or I have to use those buttons exclusively? Because once the the Brook UFB gets a new version to support PS5 native and the MPress will start shipping with it, im copping that in an instant as my entry to this style of controller!

I'd like a hitbox with optional ( detachable) analog controls and possibly foot pedals. Basically a 360 pad with arcade style buttons I can use in conjunction with a mouse. Or analog keyboard and mouse with nice buttons that my clumsy hands can hit easily for use with every type of game not just one genre.

I think the higher frequency clicks that u experience on the keyboard is because of the keycaps being more hollow. The gamepad is more shallow

That's one thing they didn't think about, the natural curvature of the hands and the lowering of the button for the little finger on the right hand. I'm a game-pad guy though, these hit-boxes are too much mental strain.

Is there or will there be options for non slip pads officially? You did state that it won't really be a problem for it to slip around due to no moving parts but for the few that play at an angle.Other then that, will definitely keep an eye on this controller. I love the low profile of it too!

Haven’t heard about non-slip pads as an official option but fortunately it’s very inexpensive to add yourself. Good point about people who like to play with the controller tilted at an angle.

Dang, I only wish ergonomic controllers like these can be made for the mixbox layout. You really dont see many mixbox type controllers out in the market right now and it's quite a shame. :/

Mixbox layout will have its day you’ll see :) these niche enthusiast products take time but people discover their benefits eventually and the markets grow from there

Great review, it inspired me to buy one. :) Silent red mx, hot swap, and the new Ahi LED kit with clear buttons on white. I would like to hear how ergo you feel the press is after playing a couple of months. I do hope Paradise Arcade comes out with a WASD key version and adds a turbo button, I would buy another one :)

I wish I was more interested in this a year ago so I could of had one now to play with. They are sold out at the moment. I really want one to try because this looks more of the size that I prefer since I can lay my hand down just a a bit on it compared to the Snack Box or whatever it’s called.

i wanna get a mpress but dont know if it has socd? i see an option for it in the store for last input priority, but i dont think i want that because i want it to be like the hit box where if you press forward and back together you get neutral

the site isn't very clear but yes, the default setting is to use standard socd. L+R= neutral and Up+Down=Up.

I use the obsidian right now but I'm interested in getting into these flat button boxes since i play on a laptop and itd be sick if i had a fully portable setup with 2 of those types of controllers and my laptop that I can just pop up anywhere to throw hands with people.
