I come from an Asian family, and my parents have always wanted me to get accepted into Ivy League universities. However, I was never academically inclined and was always the worst academically when compared to my childhood friends (children of my parents' friends). I just want to tell asian kids that if you're not academically inclined and you don't get good grades in school, it's not the end of the world. You have other strengths and expound on your strengths. Im very very happy to say that I've been accepted to Berklee College of Music and I intend to study music therapy! :) My passion does not lie in studying mainstream subjects. Instead, my passion is music and helping others! I'm good in my own ways :)

I remember being pretty obsessed with getting into a prestigious university when I was in high school. Of course, I was kind of a slacker back then (in hindsight, anyway), which is why I completely transformed my habits once I entered college. Sure, my classmates laughed at me when I was going to a no-name state school, but I was laughing at them four years later when I walked into the doors of a top tier medical school with my 4.0. :) Point being, prestige does not make the student.

Lol, when you get your decision through mail, you can usually guess whether or not you've gotten in just from the size of the package. Large, bulky equals congratulations! Small, regular size envelope equals "we had so many applicants this year and regret to inform you."

What year are you? Study hard for your standardized tests. They are significant to your applications, as well as your GPA. Sure ECs matter, but they rarely will make up for a subpar GPA. When you're applying for colleges, don't become too ambitious. Have several safety schools and be sure that they are schools that you would actually be okay in attending. I had a friend who scored perfectly on his ACTs but ended up his state school because he become too sure of himself and felt that admission to his top choices was certain. Remember that judging your standing by thinking "well, that girl had a lower GPA than me and a lower SAT score than me but she got in, so I'll definitely get in too" NEVER works. Especially for top-tier schools, they are unpredictable. Focus on your college admissions essays. I really believe that they can make you or break you in the admissions process, especially when there are bound to be many applicants who are similar in your caliber. Be specific! Don't write a generic essay lacking in specificity because you want to seek the easy way out and just C&P all your essays. That's all the things that come to the top of my head! Feel free to ask me anymore questions and best of luck!

When you say that EC's don't make up for a subpar GPA, what defines "subpar"? I don't know if you're familiar with Naviance, but it shows you kids from your school who have applied to the school you want to look at, and according to that, my GPA is less than a point, (on the 100 scale), than the average accepted GPA. Do you think that is close enough? I also take pretty much the absolute hardest course load you can take at an already competitive high school. My SATs should be just about average. Thoughts?

I remember watching this back when I was in sophomore year of high school. Now I got into an Ivy League. In retrospect, I think these students take it wayyyyy too seriously. You should work hard, but you shouldn't pressure yourself in a negative way. Many of my fellow classmates are fun happy but hard working students.

You can report AP scores on your application, so it can indeed be factored into the college's decision. And even if you don't report the APs, it can still be useful for college credit

This is why i'm not applying to these schools. Honestly, it's freaky, all the pressure. i can better use this time studying at a Community college while I'm in high school. i can still get into elite schools like University of Iowa, but without all the pressure. I dreamed of going to Harvard or princeton. But now they are on my grad school list, and only because of certain instructors.

I feel so bad for them. I've been rejected to all the Ivy Leagues that I applied to: Dartmouth, Cornell, U of C, and Columbia, but now I just accept the fact that I'm not Ivy League material and Ivy League schools just aren't for me; so no hope is lost, but your decisions in life are truly limited by what you can and cannot afford.

@theandymandyshow NOPE! Haha. Flat-out rejected. I expected it though. I'm probably going to end up going to a local great university (Lehigh University or Lafayette College), get a 3.9-4.0, and attempt to transfer to either Penn or Harvard. Transferring is probably 10x harder than getting in directly from high school, but I'm persistent. I WILL end up going to the school I want to...eventually...

you can, if you take them as a junior. By the time you get senior year AP scores, your already in college. You can also report Ap credit at almost any time, so no, APs dont count at all unless you want them to. Senior year HS was a joke, my AP bio exam was the day we got back from our senior trip to disney world. I literally scribbled fuck you on my answer sheet and drew pictures of spiderman. Still got into my reach school which beats most Ivy leagues for my accounting program

20% of the US population gets applied to the Ivy League, while the Asian race in US holds 5%. This means there's only 15% left for the Americans and other races in US. The fact of Asian-american people upholding 25% of the 20 percentile shows Asian people is really smart and is well educated.

Congrats on getting those amazing stats! The sad truth is that no one knows nowadays if you're going to get in or not because the calibre of students being rejected versus accepted is virtually the same. Often with stats and achievements like yours, it may be that you got rejected for no particular good reason at all. I went through my college application process this year, with similar stats to yours and I didn't get in to any of the ivies or US schools, but I got into other top 5 and top 20 universities worldwide (and thank god my dream school) and full scholarships and etc. At the end of the day, I feel like it is a very big crapshoot and that it really is unfair that two almost identical applications can yield different results. Just remember that getting rejected, waitlisted or deferred doesn't mean that you are a failure and that you are somehow 'unworthy.' Everything will work out in the long run; University is just one small portion of that.
