It’s time we review the way we judge skincare products. The way we decide if we are going to buy them, the way we decide how they will effect our skin, the way we review skincare.
We need to stop judging our skincare by simple reading the ingredient lists.
As we’ve become more and more obsessed with our skincare routines, our products and what is in them, we all like to think we know how to read our ingredient lists right? We can judge a product pretty well by the ingredients we read?
Well….unfortunately its not that simple….at all.
Whilst it is of course important to check the ingredient list for diagnosed allergies you may have to certain ingredients, the majority of us should not and can not judge a product purely from reading the ingredient list.
Judging products by pulling single ingredients from the inky list, leads to fear mongering, especially when you look those ingredients up online or on inordinate list checkers.
This is because these websites don’t take into consideration a number of super important factors
1) The dose of the ingredient
2) How the ingredient plays with other ingredients in the formulation
3) And factors like, where is the ingredient from.
Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Using the food analogy, Epicurious has this series called "4 levels of : Amateur to Food Scientist" where 3 levels of cooks prepare the same food item and the food scientist analyzes each preparation. It will be so interesting to have a similar concept for Skincare where different people in the skincare world ( Influencers, Esthetician, Derm, Formulator/Scientist ) can come together and discuss a particular product or a product category (like Vitamin C serums).

Okay so as with all videos, people are not watching or listening entirely or just commenting based on the title (which is of course fine as I never expect people to watch the whole video! Especially if it’s over 10 mins long!). And of course there are exceptions. There always will be. So TL:DW: 1) of course look for allergies in the INCI list. If a few products have irritated your skin or broke you out, then of course read the list and see if there are any similarities 2) I’m not discouraging people from educating themselves. Quite the opposite I hope. We’ve learnt how to read the ingredient list and now we need to learn how much that can really tell us about what the product can do for our individual Skin. And the answer to that is, the INCI list can’t tell us this, positives or negatives (again unless you have a known allergy). What I’m trying to do is encourage people to educate themselves in the other factors of product formulation and to look further than INCI decoding websites to make and informed decision. 3) unfortunately, wasting your money on products that don’t work for you is going to be part of the process. But reading the ingredient list alone, as a consumer, isn’t going to tell us wether the product will work for us and be worth our time and money. It sucks, but trial and error is part of finding out what works for your skin and what doesn’t 4) this isn’t supposed to discourage people from using skincare or trying skincare! It’s supposed to encourage people to stop being scared of their skincare. And instead of trying to fully understand it like a scientist, be comfortable in the fact that we don’t have to know everything there is to know!

I watched your video more than once. Because people don't fully agree with you does not mean we're ignorant or impatient. I have also watched other videos on this topic where the information was simply presented better and with confidence in the ability of consumers to understand the process they were describing and continue to participate in it. Perhaps you should calmly accept the critiques of your work or clarify any confusion caused by your video rather than attempting to insult your subscribers.

@@Cathrynn216 I wrote a detailed criticism of this video to which James replied before posting this reply. At least one other person posted a similar criticism in that thread. That the one we're responding to was posted after he'd already responded to me does lead me to believe that this one was posted at least in part to go in on people who take issue with some aspects of this video. Even if you think that he did a good job clarifying his video, the strange assumption that the main reason anyone could take issue with it is that they can't understand or refuse to properly take in the information would have been better left out.

This is so important. After watching so many Hyram videos, I started to fear Witch hazel and Denatured Alcohol in my aloe vera gel, when those two did okay with my skin for so long. I started to fear them and avoided them so much only to have them when I had Purito Unscented Toner and The Beet the Sun. So actually the key is you can only tell unless you try them.

I usually just read through some ingredients. PEG, perfume and active ingredients. If active ingredients are barely on the bottom, then I would skip it. if PEG and perfume is on first or second line, I would probably skip it. Just because I know there are so many products that are not formulated in that way. Also I check how long the whole list is. I generally prefer shorter list. I'm not interested in an apple juice that has 100 ingredients lol tho I usually accept about 5-6 lines of ingredient list on the package.

I immediately thought of Hyram because hes so ingredients-based but I think videos like this are valuable to help people calm any anxiety they may have because they're relying too much on the listed ingredients and panicking if they see something they understand, or believe to be, bad or even dangerous. There is room for nuance here. Yes, check the ingredients for things that you might be sensitive to, or even allergic, but dont read the whole book for one sentence. Formulation, quality, and SOURCING, something not talked near enough about, are incredibly important and we shouldn't be passing up potential skin saviors or lovely routine experiences because of one or two errant ingredients that you've heard to be potentially problematic. I dont care how perfect an ingredient list seems to be, if my experience with it isn't enjoyable or effective I'm not interested, and vice versa. Nuance people! Nuance! Theres room here, a whole Olympic pool-sized space of nuance for consideration and evaluation outside of a black and white ingredient list. Hyram and James are both right here - care about what is going on your skin but dont work overtime and worry yourself into avoiding anything and everything outside of the most basic ingredient makeup.

Hyram and James have really helped me find a good balance regarding how I approach skincare. We also have to remember that Hyram approaches ingredients the way he does because it's his own *personal* skincare philosophy, which includes holding brands to a very high standard, acting ethically, and demanding minimal irritatants. But he does also try the products and talk about his thoughts on how they worked. But James is really helpful too because he gives a different perspective and reminds us that a product or two with certain ingredients isn't necessarily bad.

@@boxcars10 Absolutely, well said. Considering the person talking about and reviewing a product and their own personal views and experiences is important as well. I can already see the comments railing against James or scolding Hyram because people just dont want, or dont care, to consider that both are coming from their own places and are actually in agreement overall, though they might vary in a few ways and reached their conclusions through different paths.

when watching videos like these, remember that the message is: BOTH are important. just because ingredient lists don't tell the whole story, doesn't mean you need to ditch them. take these videos as a reminder that skincare is really complex and a lot of work and brainpower goes into it. look at ingredient lists to check if there's something that irritates YOUR skin. anyone can develop a bad reaction to any product (either bc of ingredients OR formulation) so it's impossible to dodge all irritants look at ingredient lists to check if a product contains an ingredient you want to incorporate into your skincare; or to double-check the marketing that goes into it check if you want to check but let's not pretend like we know everything about a product based on it's ingredients

I don't want to start something here. But, that's why I listen to Hyram with a bit more of a grain of salt. Again, I enjoy his content and reactions and I don't want to be shady here, but he is too ingredient oriented, and not experience or results-oriented. Skincare companies don't want to poison you, so just identifying an ingredient cannot be the whole story. You'd need to be a real expert in formulation to really tell the efficacy of a product just by reading the ingredients list.

I've been saying this for a long time. Hyram has no education or training in this whatsoever. As an esthie I am so glad you made this!!!!!! It is amazing that consumers are more interested and enthusiastic about skin care and ingredients! I love collaborating with clients who are engaged. Only they know their experience and a positive experience, whether that be results or sensorial or sensorial+ results. The experience of using a product is an incredibly important function that drives people to use the product. If I like they wayit feels or smells, there is extra motivation to use the product. The product can only work if you put it on your face. Sometimes half-educated customers try to “quiz” us. There are so many factors that consumers don’t know i.e. the safe/therapeutic range of ingredient% can vary drastically due to the pH of a product... or many people like to exfoliate with enzymes and acids and are horrified by physical exfoliants... it really depends on skin type and product. Some skins can’t take acid so an appropriate physical exfoliant works better... With severe allergies to various grasses and pollens, I am more likely to have a reaction to plant based products. It is safer for me to use “lab” chemicals... water is a chemical.... I can go on.

However, while fragrance does not physically harm my skin in anyway, I have a very oily face and I notice moisturizers and serums with fragrance end up smelling really bad with my oil over time and with some immediately. I've stopped buying fragrance products cause of this (except in a wash off cleanser. Since it washes off, I don't get the scent issue). Long story short - I totally agree that even if someone makes a recommendation that doesn't mean its true to most people. Just got to learn about your skin and do what it best for it.

With either synthetic fragrance or essential oils it can happen that your skin suddenly get sensitized by it at some point ( like with every other ingredient) - but this is something you will definitely feel on your skin - and maybe it will never happen - so it is not the big bad poison that will definitely kill you. On the other hand we should still be more careful with essential oils, since citrus oils (especially bergamot) contain chemicals (yes natural productd also consist of chrmicals) that make skin more prone to sun damage. Generally speaking fragrance in skincare does nothing but making the experience of using a product more or less pleasant. I for my part only use fragrance free products since I found out that my skin doesn't like it. Sometimes I feel excluded by some brands, but generally speaking I don't think no one should use fragranced products and we will all die from it🤣

I personally feel that knowing the percentage of active ingredients is important, especially if you’re trying to treat something specific. Sometimes companies will just throwing an ingredient in simply because it’s trendy at a useless percentage just for marketing to draw the consumer in. We need to know what percentage is in the therapeutic range so that we’re not wasting our money on just pretty bottles. As for The quality of an ingredient, well that something as a consumer That’s a whole lot harder for us to know.

That's true. Thing is in addition to the % active other things matter like penetration enhancer (peptides have penetration issues), or the solvent/effective pH (some actives are sparingly water soluble/oil soluble only so when I see a cocktail of actives like tranexamic, Kojic and niacinamide etc in one serum you start to wonder if it's even effective)

I like reading the ingredients list and it has actually been beneficial for my skincare. When I break out after using a product, for example, it has helped me make an educated guess as to why I maybe broke out and avoiding those ingredients in other skincare has saved me time, money and saved my skin no matter how much an online specialist or skin enthusiast raved about it. I still love watching youtube videos and reading blogs because it informs me of products I may be interested in. I also like to know percentages of active ingredients as I read the scientific literature behind the active ingredients: more intensive than the average consumer. . So, you are correct in pointing out that if percentages are provided, the significance should be explained to the consumer because not everyone is going to do a deep dive into the literature.

Skincare requires a lot of trial and error, there are some people that enjoys luxury skincare and it works on their skin, whereas the affordable brands don't. And vice versa. We need to stop demonising products based off single ingredients. Cosmetic formulators aren't out to hurt the general public! ❤️👌

Hi James! I love your videos and I especially love this video. I’m a chemist and I’ve taken a lot of toxicology classes so I love trying to figure out the science of skincare but I also have no background in cosmetic formulations so obviously I don’t actually know how ingredients interact with each other. I just wanted to say I think I’ve heard you say this before and credit the idea of the dose makes the poison to toxicologists on Instagram. I love that you spread this concept to your viewers because it is actually the backbone of toxicology and was a principle taught and coined by Paracelsus. It is the basis of literally every toxicology class I’ve ever take so just wanted to make it clear that it is very common in toxicology and not just to some toxicologists on Instagram though I am very appreciative of their work and your work to inform the public about this. Thank you for this video and for everything you do! You help me stay calm during the pandemic and you are helping me to unlearn judging products solely in the ingredient list. Seriously, thank you for everything you do and keep being you!

Another good example of this is something like Castile soap. People will see a list of oils and sodium hydroxide and conclude that it’s a bad product, not understanding how the sodium hydroxide changes the oils into soap!

I think ingredient lists are a fantastic guide but shouldn't be the "be all end all" in terms of buying a product. For example, I'm someone with incredibly reactive/sensitive skin, so doing some light research (keyword, light!) to make sure products don't contain specific ingredients really helps in the long-run. TLDR, balance between research and sensory/formulation experience is key!!
@Cara-39

I have the same skin type so I read ingredient lists to see if a product contains fragrant essential oils like citrus, floral or eucalyptus, all of which have caused terrible reactions for me and to see where in the list a specific active may be but that's it. New products will always be trial and error for people with our skin types but knowing what causes problems can hopefully cut down on that.

After watching my skin intently I sifted out certain things that do work for me. After that I might try to spot things that haven't worked in the past. Also A LOT comes down to personal preference, like formulations and then does that product work in the formulation that I like 🙏

@Cara-39

There's a lot of misinformation about both. Silicones don't clog pores because they're too large of a molecule to penetrate the skin. They also wash off with cleanser. Alcohol comes in multiple forms, hydrating and drying but formulation and dosage matters. A lot of people have demonized certain sunscreens because drying alcohol is found high up on the ingredients list but it's there so the sunscreen doesn't remain a thick, wet paste on the skin. Too many people hear of a bad experience someone had with an ingredient and automatically label it bad, when that's not the case.
