In case you were curious, the reason Kit Kat flavours are so prevalent in Japan is because it sounds similar to the phrase "kitto katto", which is "good luck" in Japanese. This is also why they have room for messages on the back, as they are often given as gifts for things which might require luck, such as taking exams for school

+Sora TheFox17 It has to be in plural. Kit Kats turns into Kitto Katsu in japanese, which means "certainly (i'll) win" and thus ended up with students eating kit kat bars before an exam for good luck. This is after the previous superstition, when students would eat katsudon the night before an exam.
@sorathefox17299 жыл бұрын
Weird, cause my friends from Japan call a couple of their bars strictly just Kitto Katto.. and Japanese isn't quite known for having much plural forms of nouns but neverless proper nouns.

Japanese Kit Kats aren't for tourists. People give them to students for good luck around exams. The Japanese pronunciation of Kit Kat sounds a lot like "kitto katsu," which means something like "You will win!" I think that's why they have spaces on them for writing.
@Aevilbeast8 жыл бұрын
Well they do make certain flavors available to only certain area's so in a way it does make a good gift for a tourist to buy for someone back home, as an "Omiyage". Which is a kind of tradition where you bring back a gift for your friends and family back home, most of the time it's a locally made item or something that can only be purchased there, like certain flavors of KitKat. Local delicacies or foods are especially popular as Omiyage and usually train stations will have a bunch of locally made or sourced foods that the area is known for, so people can buy them for people back home. So in a way , while what you saying is completely true, he is also right about it being for tourists.

For anyone wondering about the popularity of Kit Kat in Japan and the message box on the back: "Kit Kat" sounds very similar to the Japanese phrase "kitto katsu," meaning something like "good luck!" Kit Kat bars are traditionally given as small tokens of good luck in Japan, and the message boxes are for writing a name or event.

The reason the packages all have space to write is because "kit kat" pronounced in Japanese is similar to the phrase "kitto katsu" which means something like "sure victory," so it's become something of a little joke turned tradition to give people (usually students about to take tests) Kit Kats as good luck presents. Thus the space is there to write a little good luck message.

KitKats are very popular in Japan because there is a Japanese saying, "Kittu Katsu", that essentially means "good luck", or more literally, "Surely win". @ashens The reason that these Kit Kats are tiny is because they are lunch-box sized, snack sized ones that we would usually get for halloween or for children in the U.K and North America. Full sized Kit Kats do not exist in Japan. Instead, these snack sized ones come in boxes, containing a few of these small packets. This also explains the message space on the back of each, as it is popular in Japan for women to put small, encouraging notes in their family's lunches each day. These would be on the smaller sized ones because they are easy to stick in a bento box.

1. The Kit-Cat Club (sometimes Kit-Kat Club) was an early 18th-century English club in London with strong political and literary associations,[1] committed to the furtherance of Whig objectives, meeting at the Trumpet tavern in London, and at Water Oakley in the Berkshire countryside. 2. The book/musical/film "Cabaret": ...based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from the short novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it is based in nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw.

the space on the back was a promotion, people could write a message and put a stamp on the bar and mail them anywhere in japan. But the bars are also sometimes given to students by teachers as a good luck charm before they go in for their exams because it sounds like Kitto Katsu "You will surely win"

These Kit Kats are intended for gift boxes : its a Japanese customer to give the boxes as gifts when visiting customers etc. The first Kit Kat comes form the Kyoto region : thats where you can buy the curved cinnamon biscuits shown on the front cover.

Kit Kats are very popular in Japan, often sent as gifts. The reason is because of the name. It sounds like "kitto katsu", which means "you'll surely win" in Japanese.

The last kit Kat was otonaaji, or adult flavor. Usually when you get that here it means significantly less sweet. Also, all of them have a message area because kitkats are given to students as a good luck thing before big tests. Kit Kat sounds like kittokatsu, which is saying sure victory or more colloquially you've got it.

I am Australian, and I genuinely enjoy snickers bars more than mars bars. As far as Nestle, it's originally from Switzerland. It operates in Japan under Nestle Japan that is also very old, founded in Japan in 1913. Nestle is truly everywhere, it's very different in Japan, because they run it there, the Japanese. However as a subsidiary it obviously passes on profit to the parent organisation in Switzerland.

The Green Tea one is Cherry Green Tea, you can also get regular Green Tea ones year-around. They have several Kit Kat stores in malls in Tokyo that sell specialty bars but they are pricey.
