Asking Japanese passer-bys to try Singapore's most iconic food, Kaya Toast. Kaya Toast is nothing special for locals, but for the Japanese, it's actually quite unique. What are their thoughts and how will they react? (spoiler: the egg dipping really shocked them). I asked a total of 20 Japanese tourists their honest opinions.

Ghib san is funny and kawaii again. I didn't miss it. I saw his subtitles saying something like "are you jippun lang"? I burst out laughing immediately. Then there's more "jippun lang eat kaya toast". LoL. What caught my attention is the coffee jelly, sugoii 👍❤️. Coz I am a jelly person. One thing that puzzles me a little is why do the japanese find eating the eggs (black sauce) and all anything weird? Japanese have onsen egg which is similar also maa....🤔😁? For me, I eat the kaya bread n eggs separately as I do not want to mix the tastes up. But I love my eggs with the black sauce (must have) and lots of pepper, yummy 🤤😋.

Tbh as a local, i nvr liked to dip my toast in egg..i just slurp it directly from the plate, only then i eat the toast. Just see which you prefer. Bonus tip: i use the teaspoon (resting in the egg still) and use that to roughly measure half a teaspoon of soy sauce, its about right, not too salty. white pepper just put it to your liking

I agree that using the metal teaspoon is a very good way of how much soy sauce (not the plastic type cos that's much larger!) ! For those who prefer less salty, half teaspoon. Medium salty - 3/4 teaspoon. For full soy sauce goodness, just 1 teaspoon will do!

actually ya-kun style kaya toast has been a staple in the 60s, 70s, and somehow that style died out, until ya-kun became very commercialised and franchised, it reawakened that style of kaya toast and lots of copies spread, and thus the old favourite breakfast staple (in the old days, the toast was much thicker, not crispy) is here to stay.

Actually Japanese love raw eggs on rice & soya sauce... There are quite a few famous egg producers in Japan. In SG, there's Ise Foods Japan. It would be a great healthy & tasty combo. My personal favorite, Kaya and butter mixed toast with half boiled egg, must with black coffee.. once in a while normal milk coffee... Heaven. (Salty butter will also enhance the toast & tone down the sweetness of kaya, or just use those low sugar Kaya).

For kaya toast, best not to do “take away”, the toast go soft and not nice, it is not a fair judgement of the food. That is because it is slightly salty meat in plain egg, which is "normal" to them. What confuses them here, is there is sweet kaya toast going into egg with salty soy sauce. Which is why they described the outcome is so unexpected and "complex" with a unusual mix of flavours. It is somewhat like asking someone to dip sweet ice cream into salt for the first time. Sounds weird at first...until salted caramel flavours came about. ;)

As a local, I don’t like to dip the kaya toast into the eggs, that’s too much for me. The eggs though, in a plate of 2, just break 1 yolk and leave the other intact. You want the unbroken yolk to break in your mouth while slurping it down. Dash of pepper and dark/light soy sauce to taste.
