So this video is going to show you the more difficult spots of parts to remove when you’re removing your cylinder heads and your timing chain of of your 3.7 this is also going to be the same procedure for the 4.7 and most jeep liberty’s and jeep grand Cherokee‘s we do not show you a complete nut and bolt removal. But don’t get all twisted you still have to figure out how to take your cylinder head bolts out( they are easy they are right on the top of the cylinder head) And I do not show you every single bolt to take out for the valve covers on both sides I’m trying to keep the video is short as possible it’s still ended up being 15 minutes long I do also show you why we removed the cylinder head and what broke on it when we get it done watch for the video of us reinstalling the timing chains and the cylinder heads we will not show you how to put it all back together but we will show you the important steps of reassembly in that video hope you guys enjoyed the video God bless and have a great day

My grease hands days are over. I loved working on cars but I am not as flexible, I had a hard time diagnosing it. Checked Coil resistance and spark "ok" then fuel injector "ok" I don't bother checking power to the injector because spark plug was fouled so I theorized no compression and I was right "ZERO" So, I'll take it to a shop for what appears to be a bent valve. No compression on Cyl 3 and piston has a semi circle scratched marked on surface...saw it es with an endoscope camera. Thank you guys for your video. I was tempted to do it myself but after seeing all the work involved I was compelled not to. Just don't have the time and flex to get on that task. Again thanks for all your work.

Thank you for taking the time to make these. I’m getting ready to do the drivers head gasket for a friend (coolant is brown and reeks of exhaust, cylinder misfires and corrosion on plugs). Do you recommend changing the tensioners while you’re in there? It seems the chains should last the life of the engine, but not sure about the tensioner. Engine has about 160k. Thanks again

Thank you for the very kind words I appreciate them yes if you look under my page and then look at my playlist you should see a timing chain installation video. And I’m sure I have a video on setting the torque sequence of the cylinder heads if you need it but I recommend you just look that information up. I don’t think I have a complete video of the complete installation but the biggest thing that you need to worry about is the timing. Most of the time we can handle the rest of that stuff. And at the very least just keep in mind that if anyone else can do it you can do it too God bless I wish you the best with that job

@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you would because you have to have the chains on the camshaft sprocket properly I have an exceptional video that shows you exactly how to put these on it’s actually easier than what you’re thinking about doing. All you do is hold the Time in chains on to the crankshaft sprocket with zip ties then cut them once they’re in place . And you’re ready to put them up on the gears

You have to do the whole timing set and replace the head . I know I’ve been doing it for a while but it’s not as complicated as it may feel. Trust me if you believe you can change the cylinder head you can change the cylinder Head and the timing

Hello Clay. Great videos!!!! In the middle of this in Brighton, Mi. 150,000 miles. Dropped valve I think, no compression and rocker arm laying around. Assuming block and cylinders are in good shape, what do you recommend for head reconditioning/replacement? Should I do the timing chain guides while its apart? Thanks Again. Off to remove the exhaust manifolds!
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob. Well first off thank you very very much for the kind words I greatly appreciate it and hello neighbor Reconditioning the cylinder head is probably one of your best bets and one of the only things that Accurate Engines do correctly. When they recondition the cylinder head they steak the valve seats so they do not fall out like I’m fairly certain Is possibly the case per your description. So I would recommend you have them do that but nothing else…….. more than likely you’re going to come a crossed some marks on the top of the piston. Look at them closely for cracks but generally they will not crack so you should be OK even if there’s small marks there. Use a magnifying glass if you’re unsure As far as timing goes you’ll be very interested to see the video that I’m about to release here in a couple of minutes. You will end up replacing the center timing chain tensioner you can almost not reset them but I do have a video showing you how to do it and how it may be possible so look for that under my jeep playlist. It will explain to you how to reset all the tensioners. As far as the guides go if they look good use them…… There may be a little bit of wear on the guides. But that is perfectly normal. Your biggest problem is going to be the left and right timing chain tensioner‘s these are junk from the factory and in the video that I’m going to release here in a couple of minutes you will see that there’s a big difference between the older ones and the newer ones you may find it kind of fascinating especially if you’re working on this vehicle. Hopefully that answers your questions and if you have any more just let me know I’ll try to answer them even though it’s best to reach out to me on clays AC and auto repair over the Facebook messenger

Great content Clay... Hey i have a 2004 4 x 4 liberty 160,000 ish miles with blown head gasket not sure if both on just one side.. it belongs to my granddaughter and I haven't physically seen it.. not sure what years and other dodges will fit? my question is would you change the engine out or do a head job? According to my granddaughter.. it didnt get to hot but did lose the antifreeze.. Thanks Clay
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 3 жыл бұрын
Hey LT personally I would probably repair the problem these are not great engines to begin with. Thought replacing the engine you would more than likely have the same problem eventually anyways so for me I would just repair it a repair like that to do both cylinder head should be somewhere between $2500-$1500 depending on who is doing the work I personally do them quite frequently for right around 2500 my prices are generally a little bit less than most professional repair shops but are not anything special. And I can command a little bit more money than some shops because demand is so high from my repairs. Replacing a used engine in there would probably be somewhere right around two grand to 2500 no matter where you went and that would require them to disassemble the engine that you purchase and replace all the gaskets anyways and over the years I found that the lower end of these engines are not that bad it’s generally heads and timing chain problems during the cylinder head removal and gasket replacement I recommend you have the heads resurfaced and the valves seats staked in. (this is actually crucial because the valve seats fall out because of the way they’re assembled from the factory) Hopefully that helps have a great day thank you for the kind words

Could you explain what you mean when you said they probably had a coolant leak and just kept adding more? Meaning, it was leaking at a break in the head gasket or what?
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 2 жыл бұрын
Well quite a few folks just constantly leave small amounts of coolant leaks alone and continuously add coolant until the week gets bigger and eventually ruins the head gaskets and possibly warps the heads.

Do you have to pull the timing chains all the way out to remove the heads? Or can you just lock the tensioner open, remove the cam sprocket and use something to hold the chain out of the way?
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 2 жыл бұрын
It is so very easy to take the timing off when you’re pulling the heads off it wouldn’t really make much sense to try to hold them because if in anyway shape or form they move you won’t know it then you redo your cylinder heads and bend the valves on your new cylinder heads so to me it makes more sense to take the timing off. You’re going to get a great sense of accomplishment if you’re skeptical about taking the timing off and take it off plus2 your cylinder heads it’s not that much extra work it’s a lot of work to do that job and well worth taking the Timing off to do it even if it is possible I’m not sure I’ve never done it that way it’s not necessary

@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 3 жыл бұрын
Well if you’re smelling coolant that means it’s getting hot So the coolant would be leaking onto something that would get hot so I would check the water pump Then possibly a coolant line that is dripping in the rear of the engine compartment onto the exhaust it’s probably a small leak if you do not see a lot on the ground they have a tool at repair shops that are able to pressurize the system and find a leak very quickly I wouldn’t think that the check would cost any more than $50 at most shops

@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 3 жыл бұрын
Well you have to replace the middle timing chain tensioner almost all the time. Personally the timing chain that goes from the crank to the balance shaft is unnecessary to change the left and the right chain most of the time are good but I’ve seen them lock up so that would be up to the mechanic, As far as the tensioners go I just literally made a video last week I would recommend getting the tensioners they do not have the oil holes at the end of them you will never change them again but I don’t know if they’re available I literally was just working on a 2002 that had that style timing chain tensioner with 200,000 miles on it and the tensioners were excellent whereas in the tensioners they put in the new ones have holes in them which you would think would make them better but it actually makes them worse…. And eventually causes lack of oil to the upper portion of the engine. I will release that video Tuesday I just did a bunch of releases yesterday so I have to wait a little bit to have my videos breed for a while

Can someone help me identify something? I’m helping a buddy install a remanned 3.7L engine in his 2008 Dodge Nitro. I did not take the old engine apart but helped him pull it out once he had everything unbolted. So now that the new engine is in and we are bolting everything together I noticed a hole and a threaded hole for a bolt on the front bottom of the pass side cyllinder head as if a hose bib or a block off plate with a O ring should go into that hole or possibly a freeze plug. I asked my buddy and I got the standard answer I pretty much got through this whole process and that was “I don’t know what goes there.” I scoured the internet looking for pics of these heads and can’t seem to find what in the world bolts up to that spot. Please help. And no, unfortunately he already sent the old engine core back which I told him to freaking wait until we had everything bolted up . Frustrating…..dude hardly labeled anything and didn’t take pics of anything assuming I would figure it all out .

I think that’s the plug for the timing cover bolt that needs to be removed if I understand what you wrote correctly it’s a plastic cover that goes on the front of the head and it’s there to cover a bolt that needs to be removed for the time in chain guide

You didn't show how you got the intake off that is where I'm stuck
@sharpcarco

Yeah, you might’ve skipped through it when I said…. You take out the bolts for the motor mount and lower the engine down. If you’re stuck where I think you’re stuck at if you can’t figure out how to get the bolts out of the intake that’s a totally different problem..

Great video about how much would be charged for a job like this
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 5 жыл бұрын
That really depends where you go I charge 1450 for parts and labor but probably most places would charge right around 2000 I would guess

I priced it a 2 shops, $1550 and $1600 that includes sending the heads to a machine shop to be checked out and repaired if necessary this was for a 2012 Jeep Liberty Sport with 3.7 engine

Grand cherokee you don't need to remove the fan there is a lot of room to leave it
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 5 жыл бұрын
Well we like to have the extra room to remove the harmonic balance her and having it out-of-the-way does make it simpler to do the work and see everything in front of the engine also to be able to make video of us doing the work having the fan out of the way was easier for us as well. Sometimes a cup is half empty or half full it just depends on how you look at it.

this engine had many chains and need to replace once the car is old. there are too many parts need to take off from engine in order to access the timing chain. there are too much work for the timing chain replacement. this type of jeep V6 3.7L had engine timing engineering design issue. after you replace your timing chains you got have to refill AC and check AC compressor. too many issue for replacing the timing chains, but if you don't replace it the car can be blow up on highway....bad engineer design really bad....

Lol where in the description did I talk about removing the heads? One would have to think if I took the time to make a video detailed like this why would I not make a video about removing the heads? .. because it’s a separate video …. I know when you’re sitting and thinking of different ways you can wine bitch and moan about how people don’t do things the way you want them done… your life must be awfully miserable… Cheers have a great day.

No offense to your video but putting this motor in a jeep is the absolute worst decision for a company to make. Overhead cam, over engineered piece of crap. I am going to pull this motor and put a 4.3 l GM motor in. Thinking you need a high revving low torque motor in a jeep is just stupid.

Yeah, definitely not my fault. I didn’t put the motor in there. I just work with what I got.

@@sharpcarco Clay, I have a Jeep Liberty Sport 3.7 engine 2003. The engine overheaded. I pulled the heads and sent them off to Ed's Machine Shop and they did a complete valve job on them. I put the number one piston up and the key way pointed at 2 o'clock. I put the two links in the window on the right bank and I put the two links in the window on the left bank where the camshaft position sensor is. I alinged the back gear to the balance cam. Pushed the gears back along with the crankshaft gear. The big gear and little gear are on their dots and the keyway is at two o'clock. I put the dots on the camshafts in line by turning the cams just a little bit. I put a new camshaft position sensor in and a new crankshaft position sensor in. I tried to start the engine and it momentarily ran then stopped. Now I can't get it to start. Will you help me out. It's been a nightmare. I have spent over a thousand dollars so far.
