The mountain biking in Pittsburgh, PA, has changed quite a bit over the past 20 years. With much of the trail mileage hidden among the towns parks, local riders have experienced the gamut from rogue trails that would often get torn out, to being chased by armed police officers for simply riding their bikes. However, the local riders organized together, formed Trail Pittsburgh, and paralleled the hard working, blue collar roots of the steel city and built their own, legal, official trails. Today, riders are able to enjoy over 200 miles of single and double track thanks to the work of Trail Pittsburgh and its volunteer army.

Local Loam is a series I’ve organized to help promote mountain bike advocacy. When my family and I moved to Bellingham, WA, I was awestruck by the success of the local mountain bike advocacy group, the WMBC. Realizing that my kid, my wife, and I all had far more legitimate riding opportunities thanks to the work of this group, and that the local community was overwhelmingly more mountain bike friendly than where we’d lived previously, I realized that my online platforms would be a great way to help shed light on advocacy. Local Loam attempts to tell the stories of successful advocacy groups and the communities that they create.

Hahaha! Andy was a great guy. His job is naturally very political but I liked him. Local riders were very appreciative of his openness to bikes as well. He's a retired white water kayaker and understands what our goals are with bikes.

Thanks Leo! Logan and I are getting more practice, and we are figuring out more how to Better film and organize these! But honestly a lot of it lies in the group we are shooting. In this case Pittsburgh had some awesome folks who were all good on camera!

Production value...second to none. Riding...second to none. Story telling...second to none. NAILED IT AGAIN!! So cool to hear stories like these where people take an idea, and bring it all the way to fruition! These Local Loam series videos are AMAZING! It's hard to believe that statistics show that less than 10% of all MTB riders volunteer at any capacity toward the trails. It's inspiring to see those who do, and if your videos inpsire more to help out, we ALL benefit. Imagine what would be possible if we could up that number to 20 or 30%? When you look at percentages like this, it's simple math. Get 30% of people to help, and you get three times as much done. To keep our sport growing, we need to grow the number of volunteers. If what we have is taken care of and maintained well, then we're likely to get more trail funded, or land for volunteers to build more. If not...then "You can't even take care of what we have now" is going to be the first thing we hear. I absolutely LOVE that you're spotlighting the power of volunteerism and how critical it is to the growth of the sport! Thanks for these Jeff, and keep 'em coming!! Story telling is ALWAYS compelling!!

Thanks Charles! Logan did awesome on this! I remember cutting the interviews a few months back and just got so stuck. Then like a month after shooting I had a break through and organized 90% of the story telling clips- then Logan did an AWESOME job over Christmas with putting the whole vid together. I can’t believe he found that Butler county master plan! We’ve got a bunch more episodes coming soon, so stay tuned!!!

Nice! You should totally do one of these in Duluth, MN. I think you’d dig the riding there. Link that up with copper harbor and Marquette. I’ve ridden all over and hands down some of the best stuff I’ve had the privilege of riding. Super cool to see these blue collar rust belt cities making a comeback as mountain bike destinations. Duluth is like the Bellingham of the Midwest. Industrial port city. Lots of exposed bedrock for techy steep riding. Nice work on the channel! Keep killing it! 🤘✌️👍

it's amazing to see what all they've done at Alemeda Park with the trails since this video came out. probably tripled the amount of trails and made a couple nice jump lines (Janis Jumpline, Flying Squirrel), a nice flowy twisty trail (Twisted Sister) and so much more. And then there's the trail gnomes in Slagforce doing the stuff beside Frick Park. it's pretty amazing stuff for being like 3 miles from downtown Pittsburgh.

It’s cool looking back on this a year later and being able to ride many more of the trails featured in the video. One of my friends even has a job as a trail builder now at a local company. Seems like there are going to be many more really great trails in and around Pittsburgh in the near future.

Great video. I spent a ton of time riding Frick and North Park this past riding season. Still haven't made it to Alameda, but after seeing this video, I will be checking that early this spring. North park has been a great MTB trail system since the mid 80's. Lots of freeride line that were way ahead of its time if you knew where to look. I am glad to see it become sooo much better!

Jeff Kendall-Weed, this series rocks and the stories I’ve heard are captivating and awesome. I enjoy hearing origins of different trail systems and the roots of mountain biking. I’m from the Seattle area, newer to Mtb, and am grateful for what EMBA has done and continues to do in the region. I would like to see a Local Loam episode on our area. Jeff, great success story. I've seen a similar scenario of constipated government preventing progress on trail building (or accepting user built into inventory) trails in San Diego. In the end there's always a compromise that's hard to accept, but it's nice to see when government finally cuts out the crap and give the people what they want. It's funny that your pinned comment makes reference to asking what our favorite part of the video was and that one of my favorite parts (including aerial acrobatics) that triggered me to make my following statement was in fact your "nose bonk to manual"... I wish I was part of your gene pool so I could fly the way you do on a mountain bike.

I had no idea they had this in Pittsburgh. I am there at least three times a year for work and always have half a day to kill before my flight back to Seattle. I will check this out next time I am there. This is such a good tale of riders coming together with local gov't to create a space that works for everyone. We need to do that in my area so I am not having to go 45 minutes to Tokul, Raging River, Tiger, Duthie, etc to get in an after work ride.

Hey Rick thanks for the note!! I will day that Tiger and Raging River are better than the Pittsburgh trails, but considering the terrain the guys in Pittsburgh are working with, they’ve done a great job! Trail Flo bikes in Allison Park has rental bikes and is close to the best stuff in North Park, and that’s not too far from the airport.

Ah I missed you guys here! I would of for sure came out to rip some DR J laps with you. Alameda is 20 mins from my house and north park is a hour! I would of loved to take you to the real hidden trails in PGH that is trials and big rocks/boulders, very less ridden because its technical. Great success story!! Often there is too much conflict between the cyclists and the local politicians when it comes to building trails. Nice to see they could meet in the middle and make this happen. Slow clap....

Great vid Jeff. To borrow a phrase from Hannibal Smith "I love it when a plan comes together". In Australia a lot of the trail systems have been destroyed by the bushfires and will take a lot of work to come back. In other areas the local councils are loathe to support mtb trails as they prefer to concentrate on the coastal lifestyle and sports associated with the water. Hopefully they'll see sense at some stage

Man, France has perhaps the best cycling scene in the world, including MTB! Look at all the races- everyone who wins is French!

I finally hit the whale tail on Dr. J’s with my modified xc hardtail and it was super sketchy for the first time this summer. Also Alameda park has two fantastic trails but I find that they all run really slowly in wet conditions.

I moved to Pittsburgh in 2018 but haven't found trails I liked. Looks like a good resource. I'm use to biking in Anchorage Alaska so its a bit different.

That'd be nice to do but it's hard enough to just get good riding content! If I can land tourism board sponsorship I'll do that, but for now I'm focusing on what draws most of the viewers- a good story and fun riding!

Alameda Park in Butler PA, shown in the video, has a trail called 'Flying Squirrel' that might not have been built/open yet when Jeff's video was made. The trail is not yet on the Alameda Park trail map, but you can find Flying Squirrel on Trailforks.
