There has been a lot of progress with finding signs in children. Due to research on serial killers etc. There's a profile of key things to look out for that the FBI made. And is more commonly known.

Because for them, it is Jeff. That's his son and her step son. It helps them separate their good memories of the child from the realities of the adult he became. Jeffrey is the serial killer. Jeff is this man's son. Imo that's why she did that and she did so for her husband's sake. They're victims too. Survivor's guilt, regret, shame. Just for having him as a son. Separation of Jeff from Jeffrey is purely for their psychological health

The nurse at the end is spot on! Our fascination with serial killers is bc we are trying to learn what to do in a situation where we are in the danger of one. "What do I do if this happens to me?" We are trying to get control of the situation so its actually super important to learn. Why is it that nurses are always higher knowledgers than doctors?

I watched the whole series of the Netflix Jeffery Dahmer series and what I get from watching true crime shows/movies helps me to see warning signs either in my kids or with other people.

Right I watched the series I found a lot of it creepy & disturbing in many ways , still showed warning signs that I don't get how his parents missed & I wouldn't advocate for him if he was my son in anyway knowing what he did . I believe he was born evil & turned into one of the most brutal serial killers ever .

And quite honestly I think all those psychiatric drugs that Jeffery’s mother was on during the pregnancy of Jeffery set him up to have mental health problems, and if you ask me Jeffery was like his mother and then some and I think that’s why she couldn’t stand her own son and abandoned him at 18 while he was still in high school.

I am usually interested in cases about serial killers and understanding forensic psychology, but after watching the first episode on Netflix, I got physically sick and I just couldn’t watch the next episodes. I am usually fascinated by how the human brain works and how it influences behaviors, but this type of psychopathy is too much to comprehend.

Something is off with the dad's story about the box. He said that he was angry and got to a heated argument with Jeff because he suspected there was pornography in that box. Yet, when he describes how he discovered the pornography he is suddenly not angry with his son. As if he expected at the time something much worse, not in retrospect

Why do you people continue to want to point blame! I’m a mother of 6 children and my oldest is 18. My mind would never think in a million years that my child would ever be capable of committing such crimes. We’re going back over 30 years ago where being gay wasn’t so openly accepted because there wasn’t much info on it. Now they teach homosexuality in schools and it’s accepted and everyone is very open. Keep that in mind when observing this story. Ultimately as a parent we love our child but if given the choice we all would want straight children. So I can understand why he would be relieved finding straight pornography. No father wants a gay son.

I just finished watching this very interesting series, the victim's insight was powerful, intense, and heartbreaking and I agree with the signs to look out for to keep yourself safe-spot on-and the definitions were informative. I was really intrigued with the father's interview and analysis. After watching this series combined with "Monster" and "My friend Dahmer" it only confirmed my opinion that during his formative years he was exposed to things he shouldn't of been as well as not being supervised enough nor receiving any help (along with his father's willful ignorance) for his attractions, fantasies, alcoholism, and feelings of abandonment. I think his exploitation in school also played a roll.

I’m so confused by the “glamorizing “ because I didn’t step away from this show thinking Jeffery is a hero or a great guy …I feel the same way he was a monster but this show taught me what most true crime does the signs to watch for in children and in teens and in adults you learn what not to do and with the world slowly starting to take mental health more serious these things we need to kno for sure !

Same !! I was more upset with the police & the bystanders who spoke out & nothing was done. Nothing glamorizing I had seen from it. It hits different actually watching him rather than just hearing about it. It was hard to watch & that’s the point !! To be disturbed & NOT glamorized. There’s always been freaks who think they’re cool buying killer merch. Those people disgust me. It’s not cool. It’s not pretend, it’s real.

It was a 10-part dramatic series about a cannibalistic serial killer starring a handsome actor in the leading role. There's nothing wrong with documentaries or news stories, but this was absolutely making a star out of a piece of human refuse who wasn't worth the film the movie was recorded on. It also contained lies Dahmer told, such as "keeping the body parts so the victims would never leave him". BS. He did that for the same reasons every other serial killer does: as a trophy to look at later & get off on again. He ate flesh because it was part of his fetish. Everything he did was in service of his necrophilia, not because he was some lonely backward lost soul.

I still can't believe that my friend is friends with one of Jeff's friends from high school. He was the one who drove Jeff home after he saw Jeff walking back home drunk after graduation party. I really feel for both sides, the victims and Jeff. His former friend and I both love vintage stuff. I've spoken to him a few times, he's such a cool and kind man😊❤️🙏

The home videos are precious. He was an innocent child at one point. I could've done without the ominous music while his parents spoke. They aren't to blame for his crimes and in a sense they're victims too. It's important to note that Dahmer took full accountability for his actions. Without his confessions and cooperation the police wouldn't have been able to identify all his victims. It's interesting how the media doesn't talk about Theresa Smith. She is the sister of victim Eddie Smith. There's befriended Dahmer's parents and even visited him in prison. She said the first thing he said to her was sorry.

But did he ever really mean it? I highly doubt it. Prisoners have reported how he was not remorseful and made jokes to make others uncomfortable and to gloat about his crimes. That's why he got beaten to death in prison. If anything, his full confession was practical. The jig was up. He wasn't getting away this time. So why not tell them everything? What's the end goal in taxidermy? To display.

Worked in a group home with a kid who wet the bed several times a night, beat a frog to death and laughed, and one time pretended to run away so I’d go outside and when I came back in he was waiting for me with a knife. He was 9 years old.

I'm curious to know whether the Dahmer series provides more information regarding how to spot a killer. That's the only reason I watch true crime series. I have children and grandchildren and I would like to inform them on how to identify narcissists, sociopaths and/or psychopaths. If the Dahmer series provides no new information from all the other series relating to this subject matter, I don't want to watch it. I feel so much empathy for the victims and relatives who are still grappling with the horror they experienced. I hope those who were personally effected by Dahmer find some peace in knowing that so many people wish them well.

People always want a scapegoat to explain serial killers behaviour. But even if they were molested or abused as kids or had rough childhoods (which Jeff wasn’t btw) that doesn’t explain killing. Many people have rough childhoods and never go on to harm anyone. The truth is some human beings (thankfully very few) are genuine psychopaths who have no regard for the well-being of others. It’s terrifying but true. True psychopaths can’t be prevented.

@@createart8032 it didn't glamorize it. It made you see the emotional (and physical) torture the victims and their families went through. It brought in the perspectives of Jeff's family and his neighbors and how difficult it was for them. If you haven't seen it then you probably can't give an accurate criticism of it. Having said that, true crime isn't for everyone, so I understand not wanting to watch it. Anyway, have a good evening! 🙂

Candice DeLong is WRONG to say Lionel Dahmer was trying to "dismiss" or "excuse" his ignorance to the wrongness of helping Jeff dissect animals by claiming friends of his did the same thing. That was just Lionel trying to EXPLAIN why he didnt think much of it, it didn't raise a red flag for him because he knew other people who did the same thing. That's not an excuse, it's just a quick, simple explanation.

Candice has seen thousands of these cases. She knows what these red flags mean. She knows Lionel highly likely abused and traumatized his son, and is lying! If he'd gotten his son professional help, Lionel's abuse would have been exposed.

@@constancedenchy9801 I don't believe Lionel ever abused Jeff. They shared a deeply close bond all the way to Jeff's death. If either parent was a failure for him, it was his mother, Joyce, who just packed her bags, left Jeff all alone at 18, and washed her hands of him. In my eyes, she was a failure as a parent, not Lionel.

@@jordanpressler3325 The mother had a struggle with mental illness all his childhood (starting right after his birth). Good luck getting treatment in the late 1970s. it was also clear that his father disproved of him being homosexual, that might also have played a role.

I watched most of the series and realized he really was a monster and I had great sympathy for those that he hurt and killed and how it affected the whole community. But I was curious as to why his father was involved in going and getting roadkill etc. That was very odd behavior for a grown man.

I do wonder if he was just being supportive in what he thought was just a really weird hobby. I think if I didn't have a natural affinity for animals, I could have easily gone down a similar weird path, probably not serial killing but I have always had a curiosity for dead things. When I was little I kept my guinea pig after it died until my mom noticed and threw it away. Even now I'm very into taxidermy. I collect everything ethically because I'd never hurt an animal but my house is filled with dead stuff, both on display and mid process. My friends and family have kinda given up and now just point out dead stuff or drive with me when I want to pick up road kill. I don't think any of them are thinking that I'm going to start murdering people next. Even my mom who was very against it, just because she hates germs, has shown off a few of my pieces.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing to be interested in that sort of thing. It seems odd, but how would his father know he was going to be a serial killer? If anything, the father thought he was probably going to be a biologist or something I don’t know. I know people who are fascinated with that stuff.

He wasn’t they just one of many things the docuseries added in. It’s a drama not a documentary. It got so many things wrong, one episode was entirely made up. That’s why everyone has such as issue with it. It’s for entertainment purposes only.

It’s their way of separating themselves from Jeffery the serial killer. They never knew him. They knew Jeff. I don’t find it that unusual.

One thing I hate is the publicity Dahmer is getting. I work in a highschool and am really bugged by how many students are wearing the same hair style, glasses etc. as the character in the movie. I hate that he's getting even more "glamorized" I guess is the word...

Don’t watch this Dr. Phil commentary to find out who Jeffrey Dahmer really was (as best as it is possible to know). Besides his parents, there are a lot of individuals on here who didn’t meaningfully interview him and truly get inside his mind. Read his official confession statements, read the book Grilling Dahmer, read Lionel Dahmer’s book A Father’s Story, Dr. Park Dietz interview’s regarding him, and other books and videos on people who truly had a chance to study him. And I hate to say this, but Capshaw’s accounts of what happened with him and Dahmer have shifted over the years and there are some unanswered discrepancies with his account, most glaring being that from all other accounts of people who were at his base at the time, there were more than 2 people in a room so some of these things couldn’t have happened. I think it’s probable Capshaw had some kind of very negative experience with Dahmer and I truly feel for him, but it’s possible much of the current story is not what happened.

Here's a question: what is it in the human imagination, which is something in us all, that when we see something cute like a puppy or baby and we say words to the kind of effect "you're so cute I could eat you" - or like when we want to cuddle something cute so tight that it could actually hurt it - of course we don't carry it through but what precisely is this capacity in us? Where does it come from?

The parents can only be aware of his odd behaviors. Back then, just his homosexuality would seem odd to most. But there's a very fine line between your child being interested in death, science vs your child being a deranged individual. They could've discouraged his interests, but that doesn't mean he won't stop feeling the way he felt. Should all these types of behaviors be handled by locking up the child for life away from society? The parents, just like the police, should've pried a little more into his possessions more to uncover his secrets. When you live under your family's roof for free, you don't get that privacy. I like how he was or was portrayed as not being a liar. He let cops enter his apartment, he answered questions (perhaps some untruthfully), but it didn't come off arrogant like he knew he could get away with this. Just very naive and lucky that it took so long for him to actually be caught.

Sorry i have to defend nerds like me though I understand that this is a problem. I like watching these shows but I do it with a educational mindset. I got a bachelor degree in human development and I find the way people think interesting. I want to know how a investigator thinks looking at facts. I want to see the slips of the perpetrators and I make note of their behavior. I will never understand watching a criminal documentary or the saw series and glorifying the actions of a serial killer. Why someone likes watching people be tortured killed and then celebrate the movie villains is beyond me. My husband doesn't understand how I'm able to watch these graphic crime shows describing the scene and I told him it depends on the maker of the video. I only clicked on this video because I saw the fbi agent who host deadly woman was in it. I appreciate her work to educate the public to keep women and men safe from people we wouldn't usually think twice about. I honestly believe that watching her show and studying warning red flags is the reason why I'm alive today. There have been many times that i said somethings wrong we need to go or you may not be here and then I learn that something bad happened or that person I kicked out of my apartment thankfully I was never alone with raped someone later. Be educated to recognize warning signs but don't glorify the crime. We will become such a horrible world if evil is justified and it'll be our fault if people start behaving in this way all because they have been taught its okay. It's normal. It's not normal to want to hurt people and think it's okay to do what they did and I want people to know that if you watch these and feel joy instead of recognizing the seriousness of the situation then you need to work on yourself so you learn to feel uncomfortable when people do evil things. I don't love the extreme criticism of people who watch crime news or documentary in this episode because I do think they can be a good teaching tool to learn signs,behaviors that we can't even comprehend cause our brain can't even go there but I do think it is important to call out those who don't use it for educational purposes like they said. We need to watch what we get desensitized to and portray in our society.

I believe Jeff Dalmers traits were exasperated by the alienation of love and not feeling like he ever measured up to his brother plus the basic deep shame at the time that he was gay which made him hate himself and others like himself even more. I'm so proud things have changed greatly for the gay community.

I’ve watched the Dahmer series and I wouldn’t say it’s fascinating. I would say that it’s engaging and intriguing how such gruesome crimes could occur to 17 victims when police reports were made multiple times and nothing was done.. even asking to do a welfare check for one of his victims who got out and again the police did nothing.. I think the movie highlighted how the police were so dismissive of Glenda Cleveland, which shows incompetence on their behalf and ultimately racism. The fact that they believed a young white male over two women of colour is beyond me. It’s an infamous case.

The blame belongs squarely on the biological mother who abandoned her family. It absolutely destroyed her son and husband. I can't imagine the level of pain and anger etc I would have felt, and we'd all like to think we wouldn't have reacted as he did, but would we? I'll bet he would have grown up to be a nice loving person.

No I disagree. There are many people out there that have been abandoned and have abandonment issues. They don't kill because of it. Jeffrey was mentally ill.

The biological mother had postpartum depression and in the late 1970s treatment was not what it is now. She continued to suffer from mentall illness. Likely she was not emotionally available for the baby and toddler, nor was his father (working a lot, then the marriage got worse and worse).
