Building this fully electric wheelchair was super fun, and surprisingly simple. A few bars of metal tied into the already naturally existing supports and holes on the bike makes for a great seat supports. This Off Road wheel chair has a top speed of 20mph and a range of about 20 miles. The bikes I used cost about $1400 each, So after factoring in the $50 dollars worth of metal and random odds and ends, the whole thing cost about $3000 dollars to build. Which is less than half the price and twice the performance of other off road wheelchairs on the market right now.

As an electrical engineer, have you considered putting slim alternators/alternating current generators in the wheels so while she's burning current, she's also building back potentially double the current. If you are able to send me the figure you have for the battery output, RPM, actual range, and wheel size, I'd be happy to do the math for you. Then either you can do the work, or I can build the product (probono of course) so Cambry could have either a much extended range, if not a nearly unlimited range if the mathematics are correct. Zach, please let me know what you think, assuming you haven't already figured this type of process out. I sincerely hope you see this message, for both you (love your channel) and Cambry. Like you, I love helping people overcoming obstacles. If you see this, please allow me to help you.

This is awesome! Great work! One thought that came to mind for me is.....that looks hard to get into. What if you replaced the seat you made, with a way to connect the wheelchair. Obviously that'd be a bit of a challenging to figure out, but if the wheelchair could be the seat, and then they could unlock the wheel chair and roll away without any help. And if the bike died, they wouldn't be stranded, they'd still have the wheel chair.

Brilliant idea. I’m 80 years old and looking for an off road wheel chair to get me up the hill behind my property to my cabin. I’ve looked at quite a few but they are either way too expensive or probably not powerful enough. Years ago I built a 4 wheeled horse drawn Phaeton with Ackerman type steering with coil spring suspension and wide tyred bicycle wheels. I was thinking of electrifying it until I saw your videos, thank you so much Jerry.

Why you didn't connect the two motors to just one accelerator? And maybe if you turn the brake levers of 180 degrees she should be able to break with more "power"! One other thing, with the 18650 batteries you'll be able to build an another battery pack (connected with the two original batteries) that will fit under the seat to increase the autonomy! This is such a good project, good job! (Sorry if my english is bad, i'm Italian ahah)

@72mardy
@72mardy 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with all these comments. A single throttle for both would be safer and easier to drive....but in saying that it might make tight turns difficult because both powered wheels are pushing at the same time, like with a locked diff in a car. Definitely flip the brake leavers to the bottom of the bars, and connect both front brakes to one and both rear brakes to the other. Or....all brakes to one leaver as I don't think independent front and rear braking would really be needed on a machine like this. Hydraulic brake calipers could be used in conjunction with a simple 4 way distribution block being activated by a motorcycle hydraulic brake leaver so it has enough pressure to operate the 4 mountain bike calipers. I don't think one mountain bike leaver would have enough pressure. And yes...plenty of room for extra batteries 👍 Dual suspension would be so much more comfortable, as many people have said but will be a challenge.mounting the seat section. Cheers.

It would need some sort of differential control, for cornering. This may be a little less user friendly, but it's probably easy enough, to get used to. It could have advantages, to control the traction of each drive wheel separately, in off-road conditions.

Had to have it welded together so its not able to break down for travel anymore. This would give me so much independence ! whoo weeee! We are traveling to Europe next year, for a spinal cord procedure and was hoping to make him something that would help a little, so he's not 100% reliant on the manual chair. Too hard to take a full electric chair (which he only uses for yard work anyway), but not sure what environment we will be encountering while we are there. Thanks for the ideas! Nice job! I watched the demo video as well and you should flip the brake lever assemblies for better ergonomics. Also you should ensure run off one bike battery , allowing you to increase the overall distance and then turn both on for all terrain applications Parking brake can be modeled after an older ATV set-up with a brake lever catch. Cheers!

You sir are a true hero! Helping through creating, you give me hope for humanity! Oh, a steering tip; tilt the the angle bracket steering arms a bit towards center. That way you will get a differentiated steering that compensates for the differing turn radius of the inner and outer frame in the turn. Have a good one! :-)

If you do more welding, I'd suggest covering up those arms with something since welding emits a lot of UV light which is not good for your skin.

Agree welders sunburn can be pretty bad. TIG can give some shocking aunburns in just a couple of minutes without arm coverage (voice of personal experience here - I'm just tacking up, it'll be fine. Get indoors....arms lobster red between sleeves and gloves. Welders cap is also a good idea, weld spatter on scalp (even with hair) hurts

I build industrial equipment at my job, and have a few suggestions to this awesome project. You should use ball joints from pneumatic cylinders for joining the steering, that would make it adjustable as they have internal threads. Also I would use the hole for the seat together with the bottom mounting, as they would increase the stiffness of your frame. Hope this is useful. Thanks for a great channel 🤘

Thanks for giving the details on how to build that. I already have that same exact electric bike for the last 3 years when they first came out. Now I'd like to take some welding lessons and find someone who needs that kind of transportation. I'd consider that a great pay it forward gesture and I hope I can use my existing bike as a gift to the person I still have another Schwinn mountain bike that I converted to electric.

Amazing. You made a fun ride that opens up even more exciting possibilities and adventures for Cambry. Great job! I was thinking about the seat and how to make it easy for Cambry to get on and off the bike on her own. What about 180 degree rotating, locking seat? If the rear tires are locked out by the motors or brakes, she can use them as support. Then she can transfer to the seat and rotate it to face forward. However, the main challenge I see with a rotating seat is her ability to support her legs as she rotates in and out of the bike. Anyhow, just wanted to share a thought that might stimulate other ideas. Thanks for using your skills and talents for good! Inspiring.

One thing to watch out for when designing the steering mechanism: Right now both front wheels are turning in exactly the same angles, which isn't ideal. Ideally the inner wheel would turn a little bit more, so no wheel slips when driving in a curve. This may also reduce wear on the front wheels.
