On July 16, 1988, Brody was in the locker room before his scheduled match with Dan Spivey in Bayamón (a city near San Juan, Puerto Rico), when José Huertas González, a fellow wrestler and booker, asked him to step into the shower area to discuss business. Brody entered the shower stall and a few minutes later a scuffle ensued, followed by two screams, loud enough for the entire locker room to hear. Tony Atlas ran to the shower and saw Brody bent over and holding his stomach. Atlas then looked up at González and saw him holding a knife. Due to the heavy traffic outdoors and large crowd in the stadium it took paramedics close to an hour to reach Brody. When the paramedics arrived, Atlas helped carry Brody downstairs to the waiting ambulance as, due to Brody's enormous stature, paramedics were unable to lift him. He later died from his stab wounds.

Do you think it’s possible that someone told Jose or some people involved with Jose conspired to kill Brody? Do you think it was about money, politics backstage or something deeper?
@richardsantiago2526
@richardsantiago2526 Жыл бұрын
yes... there was a conspiracy... to liquidate him, he remembers the purchase and he wanted his money back and when there was a rumor that there were changes to fire José Huerta... well, the office for me to understand they sent him to liquidate him... because the owners of the company had a habit of playing in casinos and they spent the broody part and did that to get out of it

Jose Gonzalez forgot about one crucial tiny detail just because he killed Brody it doesn't mean that he killed Brody's legacy but by killing Brody he killed his legacy as a wrestler so by killing Brody he killed his legacy as a wrestler and now his new legacy is the man who killed Bruiser Brody and the fact he's a old man on the verge of death he can finally rot in hell for his crimes on July 16th 1988

@forumcelebritypodcast

you are right; Cornette gets that Brody was a huge deal at the time. Cornette said in another interview that there were 3 main people that could do as they pleased in wrestling at the time and that was Andre, Bruiser and Ric Flair. Brody made millions for promoters especially in japan. Many feel he was one of the greatest of all time and Steve Austin said every big man should watch his matches to learn how to be a heel.

according to tony atlas, brody went to him and asked him if he could draw him a picture of his son (atlas was a talented artist). brody was about to hand atlas the picture of his son when invader asked brody if he could join him in the showers. atlas said he heard brody cry out twice before atlas and vega went to see what happened. dutch mantell also says the same thing. its clear management covered it up, maybe even had the whole thing set up before everyone got to the stadium that day, seeing as how slowly help arrived (almost an hour passed before an ambulance got to brody). brody got stabbed twice. doctors were able to close one of the punctures but the second injury got his liver. brody later dies in the hospital still holding on to the picture of his son. most tragic wrestling story. this tragedy and brody’s life should be made into a full feature film. rip brody

First, I’ve hung out with Savio back in the 90’s and he is a great guy and fun as hell. He’s also a stand up guy. Second, Savio saved Tony’s life! I’m sad they didn’t stay on that because Savio mentioned it but it went to something different and was never brought up again. He went and got Tony’s bags from his room and told him those guys were looking for him. Like I said, Savio is a good man and cool as hell.

From the sound of things Brody probably tried to intimidate or got into it with more than one person over money which resulted in the altercation that got him killed and being that he was such a big guy with the reputation of bullying and beating guys up, The Invader guy knew he couldn't take Brody in a one on one so he used the knife as an equalizer.

the closest thing to a "reason" why this happened is, colon owed brody a lot of money, when it got to be too much brody called his marker to colon, colon couldn't pay it, so brody made a play for part of the office and the booker job. brody loved puerto rico, he did great business there. brody taking part of the business cuts into other people's portion. not saying this IS what happened, but makes the most sense.
@StarryStarryNocturne
@StarryStarryNocturne 6 жыл бұрын
That's pretty much what the major conspiracy theory is about this situation. Brody had become a problem for Colon where it hurt him the most, his pocket, at the same time Brody's brewing up an issue with Invader - who he not only beat up in the WWWF during the match Savio points out, but according to Dutch and other sources Brody had continued to pretty much punk Gonzalez out in front of the boys on multiple occasions. Jovica, another one close to the money, sees Gonzalez having an issue with Brody and starts egging him on to "do something about it." Gonzalez does something about it and afterwards Colon takes care of the cover up. Basically the conspiracy theory is: Gonzalez was the trigger man. Jovica provided the ammunition. And Colon provided the influence to cover it up.
@timmutohfan
@timmutohfan 6 жыл бұрын
i think both brody and colon knew colon could make due on what he owed colon. brody was happy to have a multimillionaire owe him a lot of money, just as colon was happy not to pay him. i don't think colon cared in the least that brody was playing his booker's punk card because brody did some of the best business for colon. the issue came in when brody wanted part of the office and the book. that's cutting in to colon's long term business. brody homesteads the territory driving up gates like he can, that's more money not flowing into colon's pockets. if all brody wanted was the book and not part of the office colon would have sold 'vader out in a hot second.
@timmutohfan
@timmutohfan 6 жыл бұрын
then again, colon can control 'vader, he isn't controlling brody. so who knows where colon goes with that sophie's choice even if brody only wanted the book. brody was a problem for a ton of promoters. the only ones he worked well with was eddie graham and mr. baba..

There was a promoter in Florida, Orlando I think, just this year that wanted to book Gonzales for his indy companies (florida wrestling revolution) show that happened a couple months ago.Supposedly they were having a lot of the Puerto Rican guys on the show and dutch mantell because of his time down there as a booker in PR was going to be the special guest. They wanted Gonzales to guest ref one of the matches on the card, but the promoter ended up pulling him from the show all together because of all of the backlash his name got, and all of the threats sent by fans saying what they would do to him if they saw him somewhere because of the brody thing (keep in mind, alot of these people probably have never watched brody, but know what happened to him on the last day of his life). If a mob kills a mid-card murderer, does anyone shed a tear? Brody has been a not so nice to other wrestlers, and he beat the brakes off the Undertaker in his first pro match, but his fans expected to see that kind of thing. If a little guy like Invader had his pride hurt because Brody squashed him relentlessly, the guy didn't understand what made Brody a draw. He should have looked into the guy's MO before getting in the ring with him. I guess if you squash a thousand guys, one might carry around a big enough grudge to literally bury you.

It infuriates me to this day that José González is a free man, that Carlos Colón and Victor Jovica helped cover up Brody’s death. That trial was a sham and all three men need to be brought to trial. It’s a shame that Brody and his family will never get justice. Rest In Peace Bruiser Brody 🙏🏾

Wow What a interview the story has been told many times never in such detail with an incredible amount of new info. You can tell Savio is telling the truth it's hard to explain his sincerity and his mannerisms as he details the events leading to the murder of Brody. Add in the seriousness of the accusations he is making Savio is well aware by telling the story puts him in danger of retaliation. Even though it's been 30 years don't think for a second if Savio should happen to be at a Comic Con or the like in PR. Its possible one of the key players in this crime and coverup is capable of having one of their young guns take some kind of action towards Savio. Superb job Jim fascinating questions... God Bless The Soul of Bruiser Brody. May he Rest In Peace. Cruzer

I remember when this happened. It was all over the news, and what was shocking is that Invader was never sorry for what he did and didn't serve time. PR wrestling was like a mafia back in the day.

It’s not mentioned much here, but the actions of Tony Atlas during the period of time from the stabbing to Brody’s death were pretty damn heroic. I previously had a poor opinion of Atlas bc of things other wrestlers have said about him but I know now that Brody’s death likely cast a shadow on everything else that’s ever happened in Atlas’s life, so he probably does come off as a prick.

Atlas biggest problem is that goes and tells wrestlers personal business about what they did in out of the ring. Example was how he went told jyd buisness after his death . Jud family want remember the good times not all out ring antics. Plus he was no better drug wise

I just watched the Vice documentary on this today. Tony Atlas (who's story has never wavered) pretty much said the same exact things almost verbatim as to what Savio is saying here.

When so many individuals say, "It doesn't make sense." I believe it's because they don't know, or are not looking at all the factors. First, no one with even the smallest of brains murders someone in a manner that is as public as that. Brody went to PR frequently; this could have been taken care of elsewhere with less people: whether revenge or business. It was done in the dressing room with a whole lot of witnesses.... very specific people: wrestlers. All those wrestlers knew Brody was the model free-agent, and he didn't play ball the way a lot of promoters wanted him to, but he sold out venues. Brody was likely an unsanctioned headache for too many people who had resources, influence, and money to gain or lose depending on Brody's actions. The fact that it appears every single factor in this case contributed to the assurance that Brody died and that there wasn't a good investigation or trial speaks loudly as well. There may be 6x the murders in PR than the States, but plenty of those murderers still wind up in prison, especially if it's in front of so many witnesses. This wasn't negligence. This was all by design: a design Jose did not likely draft. Jose was connected to those promoters in the US; the same promoters that Brody had become a burden to. Maybe too many wrestlers saw Brody as the model for being their own free-agents. Either way, one guy with no immediate ax to grind, who had opportunity to murder Brody in a private setting, who had just experienced family tragedy (accident?), and was connected in unknown ways to US promoters who never served a day in jail and walked is not the "lone, crazed assassin" or "impassioned murderer."

This one time I was reading a list of the most disgusting promotional tactics per year (from Wrestling Observer Newsletter) and I was absolutely shocked to find out that in 1990, José Gonzalez reenacted the incident by "stabbing" Atsushi Onita, obviously mocking the incident two years prior. Most fucking reprehensible thing I've ever seen in professional wrestling by a shamless bastard.

If there is one thing to know about wrestling, is that it is a carny business devoid of class. They'll exploit any incident for publicity.

Bombshell; Eric Embry was the booker in Puerto Rico for a time. He said Steve Austin asked him to talk about Brody & the night before the interview Victor Jovica called Embry and told him he better watch what he says to Austin. After the murder Gonzalez told Embry that he didn't want to murder him but wanted to hurt him bad to make him know not to "f" with him. Embry also said Bruiser Brody loaned 50k to the office and they didn't pay him when they said they would. Brody got mad and said he wanted his money that night and that was the night that he was murdered. Jovica also lost money that he loaned to the business. Embry actually lived with Jovica. Embry also said there was a night that Jovica was drunk. He began bragging that he got Gonzalez off of a murder conviction for 180k. Embry left and never came back.

Jim Jax Media...Everybody here in Puerto Rico knew Brody had shares in the WWC...Carlos Colon and Victor Jovica didn't want to pay Brody the $40,000 he was entitled to so they sent Jose Gonzales whom Brody had heat with to stab him to death then covered it up...it's real corrupt
