Jim Varney Stand-Up Routine, 1979

This is a comedy special clip from 1979 or so, with an apparently rare Jim Varney stand-up performance introduced by Minnie Pearl. He talks about Elrod Napier and his mama, and Virgil at the filling station getting dosed. It just sort of ends in a weirdly edited way. The tape I found this on has randomly recorded segments so information is scarce. It may have been hosted by Mel Tillis, I think I see Jim Stafford in the audience, and Varney was followed by Lonnie Shorr. Is Zorro on? No rights held or implied. (If you'd like this video removed for copyright reasons, please contact me rather than notifying KZfaq, I will gladly take it down from this channel.) Be sure to check out oldtvads.blogspot.com for other video oddities...

I met Jim in 1989 and spent a bit of time talking with him. The wonderful thing about Jim was he was so down to earth. Being an Appalachian highlander myself, I can assure you, he understood Appalachia and Shakespeare with equal acumen!

My parents and I saw his Elrod bit when we were in Nashville in the late 70s. I was 14. Elrod was a running joke in our house anytime anyone asked the time. My mom would call me Elrod and I’d ask, “Do you got any jello over at your house?” “what time is it?” When Ernest became a household name, I told my mom that I thought that was the Elrod guy. She passed in 2008, and I didn’t find this video until 2020 (I searched for years). I wish she was here to see this video.

I saw this routine on TV back in the 70s, and didn't know it was Jim Varney until seeing this KZfaq video. My brother and I used to have a great time calling back and forth to each other, "What time is it?" "Make some fudge!" What a brilliantly funny man.

That's been one of the worst feelings, for me. I lost my mom about 7 years ago, and I see SO many things that I know she would have been interested in. She probably would've gotten a big kick out of this bit, since she grew up in the holler and would've understood it so much more. I'm not sure if she knew who he was before Ernest, but she was really fond of the "Know what I mean, Vern?" line!
