You don’t want your gas to sit in that tank for more than 2 months unless it doesn’t contain ethanol. The gas will go stale and corrosion can build up so make sure to use the gas you have within that time frame. Many many Prius primes have died when they finally required using the gas because people used them essentially as EV only vehicles in town for 6+ months. The flat old gas in their tank then has totally screwed the car. This can be super expensive so don’t do it

If you can't find ethanol free fuel in your area then it's a good idea to always add some fuel stabilizer before filling up. Also, good standard practice is to only fill the tank one-quarter to halfway so you're more likely to actually use up that fuel before it starts to go bad. It's a strange predicament to be in - your car is so energy efficient that your gas can go bad before you even use it up. Forget all electric vehicles like Tesla's, that man just drove 1200 miles and it only cost him $30 to fill back up!

@@glennwellington6656 - When you compare the Prius Prime or Rav4 Prime to any EV, sure, you have to buy some gasoline, and electricity itself isn't "free", unless your town has some free EV charging stations (there are a few where I live). But overall, the cost of gasoline and electricity to drive a Rav4 Prime is going to be about 6¢/mile, given a 50/50 mix of short trips made in EV mode, with longer trips in HV mode. A conventional Rav4 (the non-Hybrid version), is going to cost 12¢/mile for fuel (that's at $4.00/gallon), and the non-PHEV Rav4 Hybrid about 10¢/mile. So now let's look at a Toyota BZ4X. It's about the same size as a Rav4, with a 240 mile EV range. If your home electric rate is 23¢/kw-hr (the national average in July 2023), driving a BZ4X under ideal conditions will cost 6¢/kw-hr. That's on flat terrain, at average speed no more than 55 mph. No use of heat or air conditioning. In the real world, very few trips in a BZ4X can be accomplished without having to recharge at 180~200 miles, because most people drive 75 mph, not 55, and there are always some hills unless you live on the Great Plains I guess. Now the "Range Anxiety" factor rears it's ugly head. If you take even occasional long road trips, or you live somewhere with really long, cold winters, you will be much happier with a PHEV than you will be with a pure EV of any make. No range anxiety at all with a PHEV. If it gets really cold where you live, the ICE engine in a PHEV will be a whole lot better at keeping frost off the windshield and keeping you warm and comfortable, while still giving you at least 38mpg (Rav4 Prime) or 55 mpg (Prius Prime).

Super video....I watched every second of it..... loved the endless gas tank LOL. I was going to get on a list for a Rav4 Prime but I found out I could wait 6 months & probably still wouldn't get one so.............. I went and purchased my second choice which was the Rav4 XSE hybrid in white w/black roof. I just love it..... I drove 800 kms (500 miles) on my second tankful and when I filled up with 1/4 tank still showing on the fuel gauge it took 38 litres of gas. With that large reserve after it shows empty in your video I probably could have driven another 300 kms on that tankful. Just an incredible fuel efficient vehicle......LOVE IT!

Great videos! I watched all of them leading up to my Prime XSE delivery in late January. I love the recent videos as well. So far in the past 4 weeks I've put almost 2500miles on mine. Love some things and disappointed with Toyota on others...but as far as gas range on empty. I've done 4 empty fuel tests and they came out about the same. The "low fuel" light comes on when you have 30miles of HV range remaining. I timed it to refuel within 5 miles after the 30miles expire (---- on the HV range). In all 4 trips to the pump I still had between 3 and 3.5 gallons remaining in the tank (11-11.5gallons to refill). I do a lot of conservative highway driving but only average between 35 and 37miles/gallon in HV only. So, I would guess I would be able to go between 100 and 120 miles on that last 3 gallons of gas. I may need to one day. Most of my commutes in a day are over 100 miles so I only recharge about 3 times per tank. Combined fuel/electric range is between 42 and 44miles per gallon per tank.

My 2019 Prius Prime has about the same behavior: when the Low Fuel warning light comes on, there's still about 3 gallons left. When the fuel gauge touches "Empty", there's about 1.5 gallons left. I've never run it completely out of gas, though. The lowest it ever got, it took 10.2 gallons to re-fill, so there should have still been about 1.2 gallons in the tank.

Thanks for making this video! I was lucky enough to be able to get my hands on a Prime SE, and I did a work trip a few weeks later (no charging available) and got worried when I pulled into the gas station was 3 miles left (gauge was on E). When I filled up I was only able to add 11.7gal to the tank, so my first fear was the fuel tank issue that the 2019 hybrid has. Good to know that it has quite a lot of range left just in case. If the gas pump was correct, I would have had 2.8 gallons left, which would be over 110 miles left to drive on empty. Based on your math at the end, that all checks out. Question for you, since I saw the 3.2mi/kWh: Do you do a lot of stop-and-go driving, or highway driving? My Prime hovers around 2.9-3.0mi/kWh, and most of my driving to work is an interstate. A few days ago, when I turned it on after charging overnight, the display said 51mi of EV range (not bad considering it's rater for 42!), so I'm very curious about how it calculates everything. Love driving the Prime, and glad I'm not the only one who's gone 1000+mi with only one fill up. I'm slowly approaching my next refuel, but I'm tempted to try and do what you did. I linked your video to a huge post about my experiences I made on the RAV4Club subreddit, so I hope it helps other folks: www.reddit.com/r/rav4club/comments/ikqowf/rav4_prime_se_one_month_of_driving_impressions/

Thank you so much for sharing! I have a lot more Prime content coming soon so thank you! Yeah it was an eye opening trip. Really quite mind blowing. @rj.parker

Certainly the next try should be with a 1/4 or 1/2 battery so the engine can force charge. I wonder if the regen is significantly stronger and capable of storing more energy with the better motor generator and the much larger battery pack? I know a Prius will quickly max out its battery on a very long downhill because of its limited battery headroom. I was also thinking maybe the hybrid system was dipping into your ev range a bit to optimize gas range when it knew you were at "refuel now". I believe Toyota has the expertise to outperform anyone on hybrid range and likely could could out perform Tesla overall if they went pure ev. Certainly quality would improve but I would bet performance and range could be exceptional as well.

You just have to look on whatever the vehicle is and see how many gallons is supposed to be left once the warning comes on. 2008 Prius it's 3 gallons remaining when the warning light comes on. I use a conservative 40 MPG, when doing calculations. So that would give you 120 mi once The warning comes on. In the second generation Prius not a great idea to depend on this. They used a rubber bladder inside the metal gas tank. And that rubber bladder sometimes does not expand and contract exactly the same way depending upon the outside temperatures. So you can sometimes have a slightly different volume than the car thinks is in there. My car has never had this problem and every time I have driven it below the warning light and done a measurement it's extremely close to what it should be. third generation Prius and up they went back to a metal or solid plastic tank and ditched the flexible rubber bladder.

@@JamesKlafehn Did you talk to an actual mechanic? I'm surprised a mechanic will say that. It might be alright to run your pump dry once but its still not good in my opinion. The lowest level of the fuel level sensor is not touching the bottom of the tank, I assume this signals the ECU to stop the fuel pump but in this case your tank still has some gas in it. These RAV4 are smart and will not let you use pure electricity for long periods too because you can end up with stale gas after 6 months if you don't use it.
@SDav21
@SDav21 3 жыл бұрын
@@techburnsca I don't think modern cars let their tanks run fully dry. I know Mercedes for example will mimic the car losing fuel if you drive it till it is very empty. The ECU will create a controlled spluttering and jerky motion making you think it is fully empty and allow you to pull over. It makes sure that when you fill it up again it starts immediately and is ready to go and also that the fuel pump never gets dry. They've implemented it for years so I'm sure other carmakers have it too.

Just make sure that you do purposely use the gas up in the hybrid from time to time, so that the gas doesn’t end up going stale, and the ethanol itself doesn’t doesn’t corrode the engine. A Toyota mechanic said he saw a Prius Prime get towed in to the dealership in a case where the owner was running the car on pure electric everyday for a year and a half on the original tank of gas it came with, and subsequently the gas engine never turned on. As a result the he incurred a pricey repair on the engine that could have been avoided. Evidently the mechanic has seen similar incidents like this as well.

Perhaps you will be driving into the city on an EV only day, or (like me) simply want to make sure I can drive all the way into, around and back out of the parking garage without running the gas engine.

The Volt too won't hold at 100% and will just proceed to use electricity until its just discharged enough to be able to engage regen on demand to its full potential

One of the things you need to do is use the gas in your hybrid. Gas goes stale. Stale gas can damage your engine and fuel system. The shelf life of gas is 3-6 months. If you own a plug-in hybrid, make plans to purge or use your gas every 3-6 months. You should have done the test on a less than 50% battery then you probably could have used charge mode to purge your fuel tank or the other thing you could have done was syphon the remaining gas out of the tank. Toyota has a very efficient hybrid system.
@JamesKlafehn

Toyota planned for that. They have the gas engine turn on every once in a while just to circulate the gas so the gas doesnt get stale in the lines.
@LVLouisCyphre

@@JamesKlafehn It's not enough to circulate the fuel, the fuel has to be used or it will go bad in 3-6 months unless you use some sort of fuel preservative additive and that will only give you perhaps 12 months. It will go stale in the tank. Beautiful scenery in your part of the country. I’m currently residing in the Tampa Bay area and want out! I move house around the country, usually every year but the current Covid-19 virus has me stuck. I landed in Tampa last year. I’m a bit nomadic and go about around the country with my dog. I’m looking to possibly going to Lehigh County, PA next. The high 33.98% locality pay for my government job is a nice incentive. I hope to have my Model Y soon. Moving around the country in an EV will be a new experience for me. I seen a video comparing a Model Y to a RAV4 Prime in an efficiency/maintenance cost comparison. The RAV4 Prime came out to be less expensive to own than the Model Y. Not sure how scientific the test was, but it’s still interesting. I'm very mobile and no wife or kids, so this is all very easy for me. My dog never complains (haha). Florida has no state income tax and the cost of living is low. PA has 4.4% state income tax for my income level, but the 33.98% locality pay eclipses that tax. Plus, the cost of living in Lehigh County is very low. I miss the snow. I lived in Eastern Washington for about 3.5 years, before relocating to the Tampa area, and loved the 'seasons' and the snow. I lived the vast majority of my life in Hawaii and thought I wouldn't be able to cope with the cold, but I found that I enjoyed it. The one (negative) is the cold mixed with wind. Can you clarify for everyone? You are not showing numbers on the screen. I think I heard you say you drove 86 miles after the low fuel warning light came up. Then the needle pointed to the empty mark. Then you drove another 72 miles and stopped to refuel 13.36 gallons. before you refueled, you had about 1 gallon left in the tank. Therefore you can drive at least another 159 miles after you see the low fuel warning light come up (plus the last gallon). Not all these miles came from the hybrid mode alone.... SEPARATELY. in my regular hybrid, I drove 402 miles when the needle pointed to the "1/4" mark. DTE said 105 miles (remaining range). Given my data can someone estimate what my MPG might be? When DTE becomes 0, where do you think the needle will point to?

After a 2-1/2 year search, I have finally found a Rav4 Prime SE without the moonroof package. Unfortunately, it's in Baltimore MD, 3,000 miles away from where I live in California, so I'm going to have to fly out there and drive all the way home. I've never been able to find one of these anywhere on the west coast; all of the SE cars that leave the factory without the moonroof option seem to only go to the East Coast states. Why no moonroof? It's because I'm 6'-2" and the moonroof option reduces headroom a full 2-1/2" in the Rav4. I've sat in a 2021 SE with the moonroof, and my head actually hits the roof when the seat is adjusted to where I can reach the steering wheel and pedals comfortably. But in a way, I'm glad I was forced to wait. In all previous model years, the SE was only available with the wimpy 3 kw charger; you had to buy an XSE with the Premium package to get the 6.6 kw charger. This is now standard on all Rav4 Primes including the base model SE. Your 1200 miles on 13.1 gallons of gas is 91.6 mpg, an impressive performance for a boxy and aerodynamically inefficient Crossover like the Rav4. I can't wait! I'll have mine in just 5 days!

If you don’t expect to be using gasoline in a RAV4 prime or similar system over an extended period of time, I would recommend one considers using pure gasoline, if available, rather than gasoline with ethanol added to it, regardless of what fuel a manufacturer states can be used in their fuel system.

Seems to me it would be pretty dumb to turn the car off because it's out of fuel when you had that much electric range left. Once the battery got low I could then see the car going into protect mode. also the second generation Prius I believe can run an electric mode without the engine. In fact the Japanese models had an EV mode button you could press that would run the car exclusively electric. You can purchase it aftermarket and install it in the US cars. It still protects the hybrid battery but it will allow you to run on pure electric in situations where the car doesn't normally allow it.

@@kens97sto171 Well once you install something like that, you're gonna void the warranty on the battery which is up to 150K miles. The reason why they decided to shut the car off once it runs outta gas is simple - There were too many stupid people in this country who were running down the HV batteries. Now every dealer is required to have a emergency HV battery charger but back then only the regional headquarters had them. Once you run down the battery, you gotta hook it up to this charger to charge it back up. That process is a lot more complicated than hooking up the cable to the plug-ins.

@@CamKrazy2000 And yet the device I'm talking about was standard installed hardware in Japan. Nobody's worried about the warranty at this point. Not on the second gen. And I'm sorry but I believe you are incorrect, there is a lower threshold on the battery. Where it will shut off regardless. This is the case with the EV mode device you can buy, as it was from the factory in Japan. The only thing the button allows you to do is run in electric mode in situations where it normally does not allow you to. Once you get down to the bottom of the battery pack which is about 20%, it switches back to hybrid mode just like it does in normal operation. And you CAN run the pack far lower than it will let you by default before you have any problems getting the engine to restart and recharge. But there is a very specific procedure required to do this, and it is not easy to accomplish. I've done this intentionally myself trying to stretch the battery a bit to gain back some of its capacity. You leave the car in neutral and it will not be able to charge the battery run the HVAC, let the battery get lower and lower. Eventually the car will terminate the connection. Turn the car off turn it back on, repeat . You can get the battery lower and lower until it gets to a much lower state of charge than it ever would normally be allowed to. I've had mine down to a blade voltage of 6 volts. And total battery state of charge at about 16%. It'll still restart the engine and then recharge the battery normally. I don't know of any way that you could intentionally get the battery low enough for it to not be able to restart the gasoline engine. Although it is possible that if you stored the car at a very low battery state and let it sit long enough it could discharge that way to a lower state then would be allowed and it would then not start the engine. Also as those modules get lower and lower in voltage they also get unbalanced relative to each other. I've had several battery packs out disassembled replaced modules, not in my own car but in a friends. My 2008 Prius has 336,000 on it. Still rolling on the original pack, And my voltage level across the pack is extremely even. Toyota built a lot of backups and redundancy in the systems. In order for you to get a battery pack so low that you would have to get towed to a dealer seems unlikely. There are occasions where the battery pack can get low enough, that it will throw a code and prevent the engine from restarting. But all that's required is to clear the code restart the car and the engine will start right up. Perhaps that is what was occurring to vehicles that ended up being towed to the dealership. You could probably clear the codes also by disconnecting the 12 volt battery.

@@kens97sto171 Hybrid vehicles have NO starter. In order for the MG1 to turn over the engine, the HV battery MUST have enough juice otherwise the vehicle will NOT start. If people in this country were more responsible then maybe Toyota wouldn't have to make the vehicle shut off once it ran outta gas. I have seen plenty of 2nd Gen Priuses get towed to the dealership because it ran outta gas. And I really couldn't care less what's available in Japan or anywhere else. I'm a tech in the US, I only deal with vehicles sold here and if anything gets modified on the vehicle, it will void the warranty.

Joe Kim there’s plenty of clips where people try to see what happens when they run out of gas in their Priuses, usually they go on battery only for a mile or so and then the car stops. Once it’s refilled from canister it start right up, so probably Toyota thought of that and leaves just the right amount of charge in battery to start the engine, but not to drive (and not to destroy the battery).

Most, if not all car companies keep a 1-2gal reserve even when the car says 0mi range. This is not surprising, it's supposed to make them idiot proof.

I took my Wife's Toyota Corolla to be serviced at our local Toyota dealership today; while I was waiting for her car to be serviced, I was looking at a Rav4 Limited Hybrid, very nice car... I have a 2018 Camry XSE, if I told my wife that I wanted to trade her Corolla in for the Rav4, I would probably be living in the Rav4....

You would NOT regret buying the Rav4 Limited hybrid...... I was just going to buy one, the salesman told me to come back in a couple days so they could clean it up... when I showed up 2 days later it had a SOLD sign on it. I wasn't happy but I did end up buying what I really wanted, a Rav4 XSE hybrid..... it's incredible!!
