I live in NJ and served in the reserves and later on active duty with my reserve unit, 6th Motors, for a number of years. In the mid '80s i had the honor of leading the annual John Basilone day parade in his hometown of Raritan, NJ as part of the color guard twice. Semper Fi Gunny!

@@colt451911w 9th Marines, a lot of Marine Corps history there. When I was on Okinawa Aug74-Sep75, the 9th Marines (1/9) Evacuated Saigon in Apr 75. Then 2/9 was used in the Mayaguez Incident aka Battle of Koh Tang Island, Cambodia. The USMC lost around 20 Marines during thia operation. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sgt...OUT

@@usmc-veteran73-77 Well Sgt. You know your 9th marine history & I must say I was proud too be with 1/9 the walking dead & we were lead by Col. Robert Barrow who became the 27th Commandant of the Marine Corps. 79-83 we lucked out getting Col. Barrow as our commanding officer with him being in WW2 , Korean War & Vietnam . He never rattled. All of us who served under him were proud & stood a little taller the day he became the 27th Commandant of the Corps. BTW Sgt thanks for your service. Semper fi Marine

@@colt451911w Gen Barrow was our Commanding General of Parris Island when I was at boot camp, Oct-Dec 73. The reason I know about 1st & 2nd Bn 9th Marines April-May 75, I was in the old 3rd Force Service Regiment, aka FSR Fumble Stumble Regroup (todays 3rd MLG). I actually helped load out the USS BLUE RIDGE in March 1975 with 1/9 at White Beach, before it left for Sagion.

Your right, that is a GREAT Movie. My Father was in the 1st Marine Division after the Guadalcanal Campaign, he was one of the first to land on Cape Gloster, Pelielu and Okinawa. He never met John Basilone as he got rotated back to the US after Guadalcanal but he saw him awarded the Medal of Honor when he was in Australia.

Today is the 105th birthday of John Basilone, a true hero of the Marines and America. I quite by chance came across this poem yesterday, which seems perfectly to fit John Basilone. My Creed by Howard A. Walter (1883-1918) I would be true for there are those who trust me, I would be pure for there are those who care, I would be strong for there is much to suffer I would be brave for there is much to dare I would be friend of all, the for, the friendless. I would be giving and forget the gift. I would be humble for I know my weakness. I would look up, and laugh, and love and live. With the partial exception of line two, this in many ways sums up

(previous post continued) John Basilone. He was liked and respected by his fellow Marines, liked because of his open, friendly nature, respected for his total professionalism, he knew all there was about machine guns and was committed to the men in his squad. The last line is especially appropriate, as he certainly laughed, loved and lived his short life to the full. Rest in Peace John Basilone.

They don't make em like this anymore, or rarely, what a true badass this Italian Marine was. I have the greatest respect for that era of Marines, their one reason, the uniform another, is why i joined in the 70's. Semper Fi. Gunny! RIP!

There is more info about what he did to earn the Medal Of Honor in the citation itself. Apparently the battle went on for 3 days and he had to fight his way back to the rear to acquire more ammo for his machine gun more than once. I'll post a link if I can find it.

The Marines Should've Assigned Him to a Combat Support Role When his Return to The Pacific..Semper Fi
@patrickhows14824 жыл бұрын
It was at his own request that he went back into combat. All good NCOs are committed to the men under them but John Basilone's fellow Marines repeatedly commented on his total commitment to his squad and then to his company. He wrote to his wife, Lena, saying that he was staying with his company because they were still so young and had no idea of what they were about to face.
