Jojo Siwa is best known for her time on Dance Moms and subsequent music and KZfaq career. More recently though, she's been the subject of much controversy, such as her pretending to be pregnant, associating with people like James Charles, and defending Colleen Ballinger after the controversy. Now, former members of her girl group XOMG POP! such as Leigha Sanderson have come forward with allegations against both Jojo Siwa and her mother Jessalyn Siwa and how they may have mistreated the girls.

As an abuse survivor, giving abusers pity, the benefit of the doubt, and devil's advocate can often enable them to evade accountability and maybe hurt again. They are often worse under the surface than they seem. That's why it's so frustrating to see people defend them, and why we shouldn't do it.

Yeah there is no excuse for abuse. in particular against kids. at some point and time you learn it's wrong (if you don't already know). after that it is a choice to hurt. no sympathy from me for people who choose to do it.

Hurt people hurt people. But I see arguments on both sides. 'Not all abused turn into abusers' Yes. But some do. I feel like people are uncomfortable with the ideas of abused becoming abusers. And those abused that don't, feel hurt that they might be looked at someone who would hurt another being. That's what makes it so difficult. From what I see there are a few 'options' people growing up in an abusive situation have. 1. end the cycle 2. turn into advocates, speaking out 3. suffer in silence, keeping it all inside 4. therapy 5. (the option no one wants to think about, ending oneself) 6. become abusers I'm sure there's more, but they are not mutually exclusive. Some turn into people that could never do what has been done to them, while some turn into what they hated most growing up. I think there needs to be more nuanced discussion around the topic. We shouldn't assume that every victim will create more victims, but we should also be aware that it is an option and how to properly identify it. It's always iffy on the internet, but we should open our eyes and look around us in the sphere of people we deal with in our closest proximity. Those we can help. While Jojo... we can only watch and hope that someone close to them pays attention...

@taylorgriffith94 when you have spinal surgery or other kinds of surgery, oftentimes they will put a pump in for drainage that sits around the belly button area. It's not like her belly button randomly started bleeding for no fucking reason. This was mere weeks after she had a very serious surgery. Hell, full grown ADULTS are told to take 6-8 weeks after having outpatient surgery before doing anything strenuous, and those are, again, ADULTS. If you don't know what you're talking about, just keep your ignorance to yourself. You're too old to act like this, tbh. 😂

My daughter's not performing only a few weeks after spinal surgery!" It’s because people don’t see it as abuse, especially not the dancers and instructors in it. That’s how they were taught, so they’ll teach that way too. The cycle continues because money is a powerful motivator, especially if you’re already an authoritarian person in this capitalistic society that’s designed to feed and. Profit off of pitting people against each other like dogs. And because dance is also traditionally seen as feminine (ignoring the long history of how it used to just be a guy thing lmao), it’s easier to hide the abuse behind glitter and pink because women are too weak to do something like THAT.

One of the major problems is people 'in the industry' always used the excuse "oh that's just how it is, if you can't handle it you'll NEVER get anywhere" and use fear to make their performers feel like they HAVE to deal with abuse for the sake of their future. Basically every industry that "makes stars" uses this bs and it won't be stopped unless serious change is made.

My mother saw I had some singing talent when I 12, so she struck a deal with the local music school that she would perform odd jobs at the school to cover my lessons. But the big difference was that I wasn't *working* for my voice teacher and had to cover work-related expenses to keep studying. I can see being able to practice like that so soon after surgery (I have Spina Bifida and have had many spinal surgeries), especially if your SB is milder. It's really stupid and risky, but if you're a decently fast healer and can push through the pain, you COULD dance that soon. Also you're 100% right about the parents. I'd say Jojo and the parents here are equally culpable in the abuse. My parents aren't perfect but there's no WAY they'd even CONSIDER letting me do something that intense even AFTER the initial six-week minimum recovery time (normally it's 6 weeks rest and then even longer on light activity).

What happened to me was unconscionable and has forever scarred me in a way that I will be fighting my entire life. It was not okay, it should not be repeated, and I do my best to ensure I don't repeat those abuses on my children. 'I went through it and I turned out great' isn't an okay excuse. JoJo siwa being treated badly (not saying the word so my comment doesn’t get flagged- not deminishing her experience) is no longer able to be an excuse for how she treats people around her and especially this group. She’s a social media influencer as well as everything else, being that she originated from dance moms means that she would’ve slipped into dance moms tiktok many times and much of it points out how horrible they treated the children. If she thinks it’s okay to treat children like this, her morals are insanely corrupt moreso then just someone with trauma that they haven’t dealt with. She sees treating people badly- especially children- as okay. Her ex’s have come forward claiming that she treated them poorly as well. I really hope all this new information finally brings her down and maybe she’ll get the help she needs. But that being said your trauma isn’t an excuse to be a bad person.

You start walking around the second or third day. You CAN NOT FALL OR YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR SPINE AND NERVES. Exercise is not recommended unless you’ve fully healed unless you’re being watched by a doctor or physical therapist. Keep in mind this is my personal experience as someone who has had 3 surgeries. But damaging the spinal cord before healing WILL CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE. I did PT exercise 3 months after my last surgery and earned permanent bilateral cluneal nerve damage.

Hi, child of a "star mom" here - and let me tell you: this kind of thing ruins your self worth and self esteem. My mom would pull me to these stupid things for singing ALL the time. If I didn't get picked, or I was turned away, I got punished and lambasted for the rest of the day. Then, the practicing would start all over again....and I hated it. With a passion. I still don't like to sing in front of people because of her. I will shut up the instant anyone walks in, even if they're looking to give a compliment. Forget that. I don't ever want to hear another person's opinion on my voice /ever/ again - good or bad. They put you up there like meat, judge you openly, and then kick you on your way. It's brutal. It's demeaning. It's all for the parents - and not for you, the child. Any money I ever did make my mom ate right up. Yesterday, I took my kid to a dinosaur event at the city convention center...and they had one of those Star Quests things there for dancers. My daughter said it looked like so much fun - until we saw young girls crying in the hallway. I had to explain to her why all these pretty girls dressed up so wonderfully were crying - and she was really sad about it. Do not do these things to your kids. If they say they want to go - okay, support them - but let them know they are literally a sheep going for the slaughter. If you aren't rich or famous, then you're doing something right in your life. Only those who are cut-throat and unkind make it big 99% of the time. That rare 1% of kind, venerable wealthy people are too few to matter - and they definitely don't attend these nasty cattle-corral like kind of meat-picking sessions where everyone is used except the talent agency. Seriously. It's a waste of a day. With the internet now, you're way better off just making a video of you dancing. The comments there would be far less harsh. Trust me. I have a life-long weight problem because I cannot tell you how many times I was turned away for being "too fat". It upset my mom so much she put me on a diet at 8 years old. 8. Dieting. Imagine all your friends getting cake at a party, but you can't have a slice because we have auditions coming up! :D ....It. Sucks. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOUR KIDS, PLEASE! See? No excuse, Jo-jo. I was raised in a horrible environment, and I don't even get close to that kind of behavior. My daughter is raised that all girls are pretty, everyone has a talent, and our self-worth comes from within.

I'm from Minnesota, I live about 20 minutes from the mall of America. If they were here in winter, the cold here really is no joke. It can be painfully cold for people without asthma or any breathing issues but for people who have medical complications it can be unbearable. I went to school with kids who were forced to stay inside for recess because the cold would set off their symptoms. I have an autoimmune issue that makes me more sensitive to the cold so I feel like I understand at least to some degree how she would have felt and my heart goes out to her!

It makes sense that Jojo would have to pass the torch. Her fans are still very young so evolving her brand to suit her age would be a risky business move but also, I'd imagine that as she outgrows her very colorful, sparkly, marketable image, it wouldn't make sense to continue being the face of it. It's just a shame that at this point, it seems she is actively choosing to pass on her trauma, as well.

You can say that, the thing is that they signed a 5 year contract before they started filming Siwa's Dance Pop Revolution. Seeing as Anjie was having to clean Jess and JoJo's house they didn't have the spare money to pay for a breach of contract. Anjie has said that Jess said to all the mums that if you try and leave then you owe me $175,000.

@@amandamandamandsThe mother also said she signed a contract for her daughter to be in a girl group, not a reality competition and was surprised when they first showed up. Either she didn't read the contract or choose not to do anything when the Siwa's altered the terms or fail to follow child labor law. Also, there would have been at least two different contracts, one for the reality show and one for after her daughter won her way into the group, that is two chances to walk away.

You don't know head pain til your tender brain has no cushion....it took a month to gain that back and a FULL YEAR for recovery. The fact they had a CHILD doing ANYTHING only WEEKS after surgery could have paralyzed her!!!! That's not even an exaggeration, they could've put her in a damn WHEELCHAIR!!!!

Damn the wearing sweaters and cranking up the heat unlocked a memory. When I was dancing there was a trick dancers used in the hopes of losing weight, they'd sweat off pounds while not actively dancing. The studio I went to never encouraged this, but dancers would wear heavy sweaters/scarves/legwarmers even in the summer heat. I remember going to a winter competition/workshop in the 90s, one of the studios that came all the dancers were covered and huddled next to heaters. The studios where I live educated dancers around 2003 to stop the sweating off pounds trick, after several dancers ended up in the hospital due to dehydration. Why is JoJo shoving these girls in a heated room with sweaters on and quickly dehydrating them by having them dance for hours?

I just rewatched the whole series and THIS particular mother and daughter duo. The MOTHER is the one that said I want to give my daughter every opportunity no matter what because it doesn’t happen often. She also stated that she does NOT want her daughter’s diagnosis to hinder her in anyway or have jojo and her mother to look at her any differently than another child in any circumstance. As far as payment… her mother paid for their air bnb. As far as getting paid for promotion or pictures, food, travel, places to stay… it is 100% the parent’s responsibility. I not only had children that were in 2 industries (oldest in print ads & commercials)2nd was a toy model on boxes). They both were in very high level competitive gymnastics (oldest a level 10 and 2nd a level 9) both children were also in theatre. I 100% was responsible for all these things out of MY pocket. I’m also an elite level gymnastics coach… sorry… it’s our JOB to correct kids, teach them the ability to lose disappointingly with Grace and win humbled with fire to achieve more. Dance kids workout and practice at a lower amount of hours and physical strength. High level gymnasts practice 40 plus Hours a week on top of strength core/isolated conditioning, endurance and weights along with numbers in routines on 4 events. These parents knew what they were getting into. It’s not uncommon for talented kids with parents that can’t afford the monthly price of 600.00 minimum a month to work for the gym as cleaners, front desk clerks, personal assistant, meet coordinator etc to help take some of the cost off the price and expenses. Additionally combine the price of leotards, grips that need replacement every 3/4 weeks at 80.00 ea and travel to meets that have an entry fee for each competition at $120-$250 all over the states and countries just to compete. Not including coaches fees to just show up for your kid. Then the families hotels, rented car, food expenses or extra practices at another gym location during travel is the PARENTS responsibility. These parents know what they are getting into- it’s just because it was on TV it’s easier to make Jojo and her mom the bad guy. Look up where she danced before and inquire about prices, competition and hours along with travel fees … I will assure you… it’s not pennies. It’s the MOTHERS job to parent and care about her daughters health if in fact it was that dyer, it was HER responsibility to pull her and not put the blame on the teacher or Jojo (a child) to know better than the mother and keep the kid safe!

Fame is not worth destroying your child or allowing someone else to do so. If the attention of the masses is so important to these parents, they should do all the work to become famous rather than force or convince their child to fulfill their dream in their place.

I remember when I was about 13, I had already broken my tailbone twice in dance and falling down the stairs. But I broke it again in cheerleading when the build came down and I landed on the back’s nose and broke it. I then went to dance practice and it was close to the Nutcracker. I expressed to my dance teacher that my tailbone was broken and it excruciatingly painful to do splits. She pretty much said she didn’t care and to push through the pain. She then made me go do a split in the doorway for a majority of class while everybody else was working on the routine. I guess she thought if I did that long enough the pain would go away. But let me tell you. As a 30 woman, I have such pelvic and spine pain. My left hip can’t sit for too long and my sciatica can get really bad too on the left side. My tailbone is crooked and I did go to a PT one time that attempted to straighten it but it would’ve taken months of continuing that and it hurt like hell and she had to put a finger up my butt and that wasn’t pleasant. So I said screw it. I’m stuck this way. But what you said about them not respecting that girl’s spinal surgery… it reminded me of that story.

I swear at this point, we have heard to many stories about children being abused and exploited in the entertainment industry. So, if this industry is unwilling to take measures to make sure that any child in the industry is being protected appropriately; maybe there needs to be laws that no minor is allowed to work in the industry. I'm sure a lot of you may think this is extreme, and a punishment to the children. But something drastic has to be done and if the industry is worried about losing child stars if minors can't work in the industry, then they better move their asses and fix this. Childhood is a crucial age for development. trauma in childhood doesn't end in childhood it's life long. This whole belief that "oh they're a kid they won't remember this." is such a lie, and dangerous. And Jojo has gone from a victim of industry to perpetrator. Hold her accountable, and maybe she will realize she has healing to do and amends to make.
