Todd Phillips' standalone origin story of an iconic arch-nemesis stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society. Joker is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Shocking in its originality and intensity, Joker is a game changer for so-called comic book movies. Showcasing a fully immersed performance from Joaquin Phoenix and a new vision of world building, Todd Phillips' latest is an unsettling, exciting portrait of the villain we thought we knew.
Phillips and Scott Silver's original screenplay isn't an adaptation of any previous part of the DC Comics canon, though its reference points will reward fans. The setting is 1981 Gotham City, inspired by New York of the same era, so mythologized on film for its colour, crime, and corruption.
Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) ekes out a living as a clown, performing for tourists and children as he dreams of fame as a stand-up comedian like his hero, talk show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro). But people never do what Arthur wants them to do, his inner torment eats at him, and his ailing mother keeps harping on everything she is owed by her former employers, the Wayne family. Life is so ugly that you just have to laugh.
As Arthur descends into the unhinged killer he must become, Phoenix keeps us on edge as he reveals the soul of a man in crisis. A tentative romance with his neighbour Sophie (Zazie Beetz, also at the Festival in Lucy in the Sky and Seberg) grows more dangerous with each encounter.
Part of the pleasure of watching Joker stems from its technical brilliance. Its production design and cinematography capture the supersaturated grit of a rotting Gotham. Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver course quite recognizably through the film's veins. And Hildur Guðnadóttir's score contributes to the feverish effect. This movie is proof that even the most familiar can begin anew.

The film is so deep it becomes simple. It simply shows reality nude and crude most people choose to ignore in favor of living in a good-evil imaginary world. The movie is marketed to be about a comic book villain, yet every character in it is a villain and a hero in some way. It makes you look at yourself before criticizing others.

you sure do like to copy my picks/ predictions for the nominations. Then again I CAN SEE why, lol you're a typical.... anybody knows that the HFPA will give this nods and awards like crazy, thus if you knew- the awards for who they pick are called the Golden Globes and come prior to the Oscars. Not only that, it is very ignorant for you to call out: "Adapted Screenplay", "Original Score", "Achievment in Cinematography/ AND Directing",.. naive as the typical sprout you are. We will get into the debate why when you reply. Award season (ESPECIALLY for the Academy) just started, you still got the late Oct-Mid November. Then the usual December month where it peaks at X-mas.... Much to learn young grasshopper.

This movie is about society, politics, the ongoing war we have with people who committ certain types of crimes... ANY young adut (16+) NOT should, but NEEDS to see this movie.... The message, the symbolic nature, and the themes it pulls are so pure and raw.... it's eerie. Oh yeah and you get to see a biopic of the Joker and how he got to become.... MASTERPIECE. Safe to say it has a definitive lock in on the "Best Actor In A Leading Role" category as well as "Best Picture". Those are the two, 100% nominations this pheneomenal cinematic educator and adventure have.... would not be surprised to see it grab the "Big 5" and more.

Comon, have you even watched or heard about Parasite, The Lightouse, The Farewell, Pain and Glory? Those were all acclaimed by the critics and the public. Joker is a good movie, but it divises the critics and the Oscars are not fan of Comicbook Movies (even if Joker is more a psychological drama than a comic movie). Joaquin has a good chance of winning the prize, the other categories have a chance to have a nomination at best (maybe best score)

Criss M first of all, it’s subjective if you like an actor or not, or if one is better than another. Second, you haven’t even seen the movie and you are already saying he will do worse than Ledger, it’s like not liking pizza without having eating any. I hope you stop being this close minded, and no, not everyone that says Juaquin can do a better job is an ignorant, as it can of course be done (it’s a possibility).

Same! Already pre-booked it. Edit: Holy shit, this movie is incredible. Now let me just preface this by saying that this movie won't be for everyone, if you're expecting a "heath ledger" like joker or an action packed gore fest you're going to be disappointed.... The movie is more of a tragic thriller. The story of a mentally ill man that was thrown into a society that wouldn't accept him. The movie questions how responsible we are for contributing to other people's break downs. I don't really understand what the hell the media was on a about when they said the movie surports the Jokers actions, it simply tells his story neutrally and from his perspective but it never romanticize or glorifies his crimes. The only time the movie *does* is when we are clearly looking from the Jokers perspective (e.g. him dancing on the steps) and the movie makes it obvious fron early on that this is from his perspective so of course certain actions are going to painted as empowering but let me make it clear, they make his actions empowering *to him* There's a bombshell near the end that fits in beautifully with what the joker is all about, and while I saw it coming I greatly appreciated what they did. Thomas has a clear understanding of the character.... The cinematography is incredible the music is hauntingly beautiful etc ect. I think this is a really strong movie that is *almost* perfect, there are however a few things that kind of weakened it for me but now we are in going into spoiler territory so I'm gonna stop there. All in all an incredible movie: 8.9/10

I think Joaquin’s definitely one of the greatest actors. I was saying to a friend the other day that he makes me forget that he’s acting. Like, I totally believe he is the character and that the character is real. I’m not thinking, oh, this is just Joaquin Phoenix pretending to be XYZ, like I do with, say, Brad Pitt or Leo DiCaprio. I buy into his performance, and to me that’s a mark of a fantastic actor. 🙌🏻🙌🏻☺️
