The 1st base coach probably told the kid on first to hold up, then started yelling at him to run once they threw the ball home, the kid immediately realized the inning was over but the coach was still yelling at him to run and he doesn't understand why, wondering if he was wrong about how many outs there were, then the kid running to first, who was out anyway, starts yelling at him to run too, so the coaches probably got confused and then confused their players by yelling "run run run" after the inning is already over. And the team on the field is just as confused by all the coaches yelling so they keep after the runners. I remember being a young player and coaches yelling all the time to stop/go do this/that and half the time they didn't know what they were talking about but if you don't listen to them, they act like you're stupid, so you end up following their bad calls.

@scott1564 2 жыл бұрын
On this play, there was just 3 outs; everything after that was theater. HOWEVER, there are situations where there could be 4 legal outs in an inning. Take a similar situation as here where there was a runner on second AND third and assume the left field caught the second out, both the runners tagged, the left fielder threw out the runner from second going to third (third out), and they appealed the runner from third going home for leaving early. Successful appeal = 4th out and no run score. Had they not appealed, the run MIGHT have scored -- its a timing play, so its in their best interest to appeal and get a legal 4th out. You could also get a legal 5th out in a similar way, but it has probably never happened: imagine bases loaded, one out. Caught fly ball, all runners tag, but runners at second and third leave early. Runner at first gets caught in a rundown, and eventually gets tagged out for the third out, but after runners from second and third already scored. Defense MUST appeal them leaving early, so they do. Fourth and Fifth legal outs. I take that back -- this probably HAS happened; in a beer league softball game somewhere. Whether it was ruled on correctly or not, who knows.

Awesome video. Great look at LL players. I umpired LL for 30 years, up to the Regional Tournaments that send winners to LLWS at Williamport. I looked at this sequence from a LL umpires perspective. First, I LOVED how the first AB in the video...this catcher is great!! Nicely handled by the plate ump. Then, on the fly ball, if you look closely at 1:17-1:18, you will see the 2nd base Umpire out into short CF in a good angle to see the play and he has his right fist in the air, signaling it was a catch. So, had this been more confusing, he would have confirmed he ruled it a catch at the moment the play was made. Thus, out #2. I did not see if the plate ump looked to see if the runner on 2nd left early but since there was a play on him and he was clearly tagged out at the plate, whether he tagged up or not is moot (though the video shows he did). As a LL ump, these goofy things happen and that's what makes it fun. Thanks, Jomboy for a great clip.

As someone said in a different comment here, the kid saying "he caught it" was likely saying that to the first base coach. I have a friend who thinks that if there are 2 outs with runners on 1st and 2nd and the ball is grounded down the line to the 3rd baseman, they should still be able to turn the 5-4-3 triple play and carry the outs over to the next inning. I think he would apply that rule here, too.

Actually saw it happen in a teen age league game. Team batting had a batter out of turn. Called him out for the 4th out. Then started the next inning with one out. This was by certified Little League Umpires.

It’s actually 6 outs: 1) the strike out; 2) the catch; 3) the play at the plate; 4) lead runner overtaken by following runner; 5) tag of lead runner; and 6) tag of following runner.

Additional outs.. they throw to second to get the runner out if he left too soon on the tag up. Then the runner passing the other runner on the basepads.

The batter wasn't telling the coach to calm down, he was telling him that he thought the pitch was low.

It is possible for four outs or more if a runner makes it to the plate, a runner is tagged, and then a force out after to negate the run.

The catcher did the right thing: you play until they tell you to stop playing. Get nine outs if that's what it takes. Tag people in the dugout. Get the coaches. I don't know if the plate umpire had said something.

Ok. Umpire here. Runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Fly ball to center is caught for out #2. (Score it batter out 8). Runner on 2nd tags up to 3rd and is probably sent home erroneously by the coach and is put out at home for out #3. (Score that 8-6-2). Inning is over BUT, this is Little League where the players are kids and the coaches are volunteers. The trailing runner at first base was the batter, so he was already out. The lead runner and the runner on 2nd would have been forced if the ball had been dropped because this is Little League and even though that pop fly was a bit shallow there is no infield fly rule in this division. But anyway the lead runner was occupying first base so he could have been tagged out if the outfielder chose to make that play. Either way, the inning was over with the put out at home, it's always cute to see them throw the ball around and that original batter REALLY looked like Hambone Porter from The Sandlot.
