"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

@@ah_helou2845 Dylan was on the brink of suicide from the backlash. Only a sociopath would say what you said, and considering you purposefully misgendered her shows how fragmented your two-dimensional psyche is by valuing personal beliefs over the actual difference in others, perfect recipe for fascism and homogeny. The biggest irony and the brutal truth is that trans women are spiritually, mentally and biologically more real women than cis women who are not in touch with their gender identity, who allowed themselves to be defined by the society. Why or how more real you ask? Because the only thing that is truly real is the self evident experience! This is why something like transmisia would have not even existed if there was no objectification of women in this world in the first place, because they have reduced themselves into an object that has been weaponized and exploited, only trans people recognize themselves as subjects. This is why biological determinism has been throughout the history used as a tool how to oppress women. I don't expect ignorant clowns like you to ever get it. It is not up to you to determine whether someone is a man or woman, your job is to validate it as truth IF you wish to have freedom and control over your own body, and I would sugest you to take this bloody seriously. Any invalidation and unacceptance of each other's differences leads to a homogenization of humanity. LGBT have been largely outlawed and attacked within the tyrannical dictatorial regimes on this planet. Trans people are your ticket to freedom, even though the majority of people as usual goes along with the authoritarian system where a personal belief has more value than an individual human being, that can give you the clue why we live under the corrupt systems we live in in this world.

Pride support this year has almost entirely vanished, mostly likely because of the terrorism aimed at Bud and at Target last year. We gay folks have known for decades that their "support" is only about an inch deep, and it became obvious when companies that had historically been on the front line of Pride merch is gone. The company I work for in 2023 sold SO much Pride apparel from lots of different shirts to socks with basically ever sub community's flag on them. This year I think we have one tee shirt? and so far no email from our executives talking about Pride (which I only today remembered when they sent out their email supporting Juneteenth despite refusing to make that a company holiday) and even here in San Francisco my local target had NO pride section this year.

Target is probably closed due to the shoplifting. I am not gay, but the best way to support you folks is to treat you like everyone else, and not like you are anything special. That's how equality is supposed to work. Having a parade is not necessary. Just treat the gay or lesbian like how you treat any other person. I don't care if you are gay or straight, white or colored, even my own race, I hate everyone equally.

We gays have known this from the beginning. Why would we believe that corporations and the capitalist class suddenly like and support queer people when they actively fired us from our jobs for the entirety of the 20th century, did nothing to support people with AIDS, and even now many corporations that pretend to support queer people continue to donate millions of dollars to right-wing homophobic and transphobic politicians at the same time that these same corporations pretend to support our community in pander-filled advertising campaigns. Honestly I would prefer that corporations just say “we like the gays because we like their money”. At least that would be honest!

There’s this classic rock radio station out in Nampa, Idaho. It’s 96.9 The Eagle (KKGL). Every June, the station’s logo and banner on Facebook is changed to the Pride Flag. And of course, whenever they do that, they get a lot of flak from idiots. Because of the backlash, The Eagle announced that they will keep the flag up for another month if the station gets hate messages during the previous month. Last year, they kept the flag up until November. This actually sets The Eagle apart from other corporations, because the station doesn’t pussy out from right-wing backlash like Target, and they’ve been doing this for the last few years now! They also have no intention of stopping either, they just announced last week that the flag is staying up in July! 😂

Are celebrities principled? No. But do they mostly mean well when they say those things? I don't see why not. It's not like they are just trying to make a profit when they say those things. But when they make deals with these companies, they simply aren't thinking about their values. Big companies work the other way around - they don't actually have values, but they think making it seem like they care about these issues helps with selling their products.

@@MaggaraMarine I disagree I think celebrities operate as brands… thats why so many of them come forward about how they have been cautioned into being silent on certain causes. For example Taylor Swift mentioned how she was pressured into staying silent on LGBTQ+ and politics and so many gay celebrities have been asked to stay in the closet. I also don’t think that celebrities can claim ignorance on certain things like sponsoring and advertising trips to Dubai… people are given travel advisories on the policies of the strict homophobic laws of countries like Dubai and Saudi Arabia . But I feel like many of them want the millions of dollars it takes to support these brands and regions over standing strong in their morals values. It wouldn’t be the first time people put profits over morals and human rights. I do think that they gain profit when they show their support for LGBTQ+ people because historically LGBTQ+ people are loyal consumers and I think that some celebrities like Chris and Liam Hemsworth are very DL with their support because they want to appeal to LGBTQ+ people without pushing away their homophobic audience.

It never ceases to amaze me how some leftists are so perturbed by her and her work, when what you described sounds like more of a critique of the corporations that choose to disingenuously use her work in that way. I mean I get that it’s kind messed up that she goes along with it but I don’t think her work is inherently bad. The disingenuous corporations that don’t really care about diversity but just like the way looks are the inherently bad ones imo. The late Michael Brooks had a saying that went something like “Be ruthless towards institutions and more understanding towards people”. Critiquing power and those that hold it is always more in our interest than critiquing those that have little or none of it.

I don't understand why Kyle cares about corporations being honest. I don't give a shit about how honest they are, I think it's good when they support gay rights and other minority rights, because that's part of the normalization process. Corporations have no morals, so who gives a fuck how sincerely they believe something? I don't care WHY they do it, the results are positive, so I'm still glad when a corporation makes some kind of positive statement about minorities. As empty as the statement is, it's better than the alternative, which is silence in the face of bigotry, which contributes to the normalization of that bigotry.

And on that note, even where I live in San Francisco, the Target has no Pride apparel this year.
