Problem with today’s society is… I’m 42 and I said I waste about six hours a day before he ever said six hours. Now, what should I tell you….? That should tell you that the average adult doesn’t really see goals or ambition as reachable because of how drastic the “have” and “have Nots” have become. Dammit America! Things were better when the gap was smaller.

Right. That is the problem with all these Jordan Peterson (the new 'YT psychology guru') videos: he develops his thoughts while speaking (with hesitations, stops, rephrasing..), forcing the listeners to follow the whole process. For hours and hours (depending on how many clips you view). A lot of redundancy and repetition before the essence (which there is, of course) is reached. It's like with tennis: I often don't have the time, or don't want to sit out and watch the whole match. Just give me the results.

Fear of failure can be a strong motivator, but it can also be incredibly dangerous. If you still manage to fail despite your best efforts, in particular when it's because of factors outside of your control, it can completely destroy you and lead you down the path of depression, apathy and suicidality. _"If my life is fucked, and all of my efforts and sacrifices are worth nothing, why even bother trying?"_
@terrestrialcreature7481

I think fear of failure usually is the opposite of a motivator. It demotivates you since the task may seem more daunting than it actually is. I guess everyone reacts to things differently but thats how i see it

We need people like him because a lot of us are lost due to traumas and there’s literally no one to show us a way or path to look forward to. Watching his videos give us hope and makes us optimistic and makes us willing to change for good. God bless this man! Hats off! 🙏🏻

H Idc what you think about it. You're not to judge me and my way of living. It helps me. It fosters discipline and self control. I don't believe nor feel like it gives me super powers. But it gives me powers over my own impulses - And that's a lot. Do what you want. No one is forcing you to stop seeking pleasure. Pleasure island has its temptations. And pathologies. It's a rotten place full of justifying lies to be and the sooner you realise that, the sooner you start maturing.

2nd year of college - I figured out that the hardest thing to do for me was pulling out my binder and getting out the work on my desk. Then, once I see something is unfinished, I can easily get to work. I'm very focused when I work too, I just sit down for a few hours and write a report or a paper. DONE. I don't have a problem actually doing the work, but, the action of getting out my work is just very difficult for some reason.
@LivinGreat

Another way to motivate yourself to take action is just decide to act right now, whether you feel motivated or not. There is a principle called, "Work comes first, motivation second." This is just another way of being more productive.

I'm Purrito If you waste time with something it means you don´t really want it. I broke up with university. It was a useless and nonsense crap. I always procrastinated, because I hated it from the bottom of my heart. I hated everything, even every single student and professor. And most people choose University because they have no other alternative....the problem is not procrastination, the problem is life, if you have no where to run. Everything in this fuckin capitalistic world is a compromise and therefore procrastination is a normal effect.

The value i place on my time is not based on money but on how i develop myself, that includes work, play, sitting watching these and other lectures, or going out and doing activities, as such i dont really consider any of my time actually wasted just bringing different values and experiance. Sometimes its nice to just sit, watch the trees and think, am i planning or just sitting in neutral, sometimes both, i think for me a perod of procrastination (yes i had to cut and paste that) is part of the final preperation before action.

I see several problems with these arguments but here are the top two: 1. Fear can potentially ruffle your mind and push you into a state of being absolutely petrified, yielding next to nothing by way of results. Most tasks that demand cognitive investment need a certain calm that's conducive to giving structure to your thoughts and rightly orienting your psychic energy. This is my issue with Peterson: he keeps analogizing with rats and lobsters and other elementary life forms to define humans, which is a fundamental fallacy. We aren't cheese-chasing rodents any longer; we're into the business of consciously pursuing value. Inflicting pain and fear by oneself or externally may work for an ancient Egyptian slave but not for a modern human, a highly evolved intellectual and creative organism. 2. On all those 'wasted' hours--what's meant by 'waste'? Any serious cognitive activity would have two modes, the focused mode when you are sort of hands-on, and then what could be called the 'diffused' mode, which is when all the free mental association of ideas really take place. Unless your are a hapless slogger, you must get up from your chair and let your mind be free for a time, thereby galvanizing your creative and mnemonic powers. So, not every free hour is an hour wasted, but can well be one of necessary distraction giving your subconscious mind its due.

Holy shit; what are the odds. I was listening to a podcast about how to stop procrastinating just before I saw this in my subscription feed.

Sir, if your camera is in a fixed position and at a constant equal distance to the subject, I recommend setting up manual focus in advance. It's how movies do it. Great interview :)

Procrastination is simply your brain carrying out a cost-benefit analysis and subconsciously concluding that doing nothing 'now' is fair, as long as the completion of the task is still possible and not too costly in the future.

My Notes: Write out the worst case scenario: How your lack of action will affect you, your family, and friends. Conjure up all the shame, the guilt, the I Told You So's, the looks of disappointment on there faces, the bill collection calls, the moment you get the call into the boss' office telling you "You're Fired!", the moment your spouse or sig other tells you they are out of here, the stress and anxiety, the burden of asking for help, the amount of work it will take to climb out of the hole you dug for yourself. Do the math! How much time do I waste in a week x what my time is worth in $. "We are not Lions waiting for an Antelope, we are squirrels gathering nuts before the Winter storm."
