There was a few people interested in seeing how the hurricane props do in heavy vegetation and grass so I went out and tested the 8" hurricane prop and this is what happened.
After testing the 8-inch hurricane prop by swamp runner, I really enjoyed it for speed. It did great. So now I tested it heavy, thick vegetation and grass. To my surprise, it didn't collect much grass around the shaft! I believe this was due to the decreased distance between the prop and the flange bushing. With a standard prop, there is normally a bigger space/gap there and grass collects pretty bad there, but for this 8" hurricane it did not.
Even though it did not collect grass, it still didn't perform the way I wanted it too. When using the prop when I got stuck, it seemed like it did not want to grab the water and push/propel the boat forward. It felt like the prop was slipping through the water and not grabbing.
When I switched to the 8.75" weedless prop, there was a would of difference where the 8.75 weedless prop would grab the water and sit you back in your seat. The 8.75 weedless prop grabs and chugs forward without question.
So if you want to use a hurricane prop but are worried about it collecting grass, I wouldn't worry much about it. If you are battling the swamp and continually going through thick vegetation and battling your way through grass, then the 8.75" weedless prop is the way to go without any hesitation.
BOAT SETUP:
1436 lt Alumacraft Jon Boat (would not recommend - get a tracker or something else other than an Alumacraft) {135lbs}
13hp Predator Engine by Harbor Freight (serial/model number 60349 [hemi-version]) {76lbs}
Medium Swamp Runner Longtail Mud Motor Kit {57lbs}
Custom front deck and floor {~75lbs}
Battery, trolling motor, fishing supplies, cooler, anchor, etc... = {~100lbs}
My weight = 150lbs
Total weight = 600 pounds

Thank you for your videos they have become a great source of information for a newbie in mud motors as myself I got a 10 ft Tracker jon boat with a 3.5 hp Mercury it gives many problems in my personal opinion so mud motor is my next choice 👍 so thank you again God bless....

That looks like it is a ton of fun! I would just be nervous about getting stuck in something really thick.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it can be fun and it can also be work haha I do get nervous about getting stuck but with this setup, I am able to pull the boat on dry land. So if I get stuck, I have always been able to get out and push/pull it free and thats when the prop can't reach any water. If the prop can grab water or mud, it can move the boat forward. So if I can stand outside of the boat, I can push it; if I can't stand outside of the boat, the motors going to be working

What is the turning radius
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
I can turn on a dime (or buoy in this case) when i'm at idle, I'm just 21' long haha you can use the tail as an oar and rotate yourself in the same spot. While on plane, you can turn its just not as sharp as an outboard. If you need to navigate a heavily populated area like a boat ramp or sand bar, I just put the tail inside the boat and use my trolling motor till I'm far enough away from people in the water.

I just bought one but if I leave the propeller in the water it will pull the motor down in a deep angle and touching the water . Do they all do this if not held strongly?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
It is on a gimbal and is free to move where it want too. Most people will tie a string or rope to the floor of their jon boat around the rip and to the handle creating a loop. You do not use this loop while operating the motor. When the engine is off, then you put the loop over the tiller handle and the rope prevents the engine and tail from falling backwards and sitting at a steep angle.

I recently bought a 8.5 hurricane prop. I can’t get it to run right at all. My set up is almost identical to yours. Sps medium. 420 13hp, front casting platform and Trolling motor on bow. I do have a heavy group 29 battery under the deck. The hurricane prop was impossible to control any thing above idle and the prop would come up or the shaft would start cork screwing. Any ideas? I think I might have too much weight forward?
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
Thats tricky. I have had some other performance props do that to me also. I know what you're talking about. I have never tried to correct it or figure out what the issue was. Weight distribution plays a big part in it. You're deck may be heavier/lighter than mine, battery as you mentioned, and I'm also 150 pounds so definitely try to play with the weight distribution. Use a different prop and make sure that the skeg is in line and that the kit is properly balanced. And it could be that the prop you got may be out of balance? I don't how you check for that but that could be something to think about. I'm interested to see if you are able to figure it out. I haven't heard of anybody else having the corkscrew effect, and I haven't had anyone say that they had an issue with a hurricane prop yet until now

@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
The 13hp could work for you. It won't be a speed demon, but it will get the boat on plane. Make sure you get the 100" shaft if so. Here is swamp runner's performance stats page from other sps owners and their setups - www.mudmotorkit.com/forum/stats/index.php there are a couple people running a 1448 and a 13hp engine normally getting 13 to 16 mph depending on load and prop size

Most of those Hondas have a kill switch , if you have a kill switch just unplug it and wire between to two .That's the way I did mine just unplug the kill switch and put stake one plug ins on the safety switch wires and plug them in.

You need to put a grab bar on your boat instead of grabbing on to the side of it.
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 4 жыл бұрын
A grab bar would be beneficial but it seems to take up a good amount of space on the boat. I also haven't installed one yet because I have been switching out mud motors and the tiller handle positions are all different, both the height and the length. If I could make one that would be adjustable to accommodate all the different positions, then I would think about adding one. For now, I am still testing out different mud motors and don't go too crazy with jumping the boat or coming to a dead stop

The point of a long tail is it’s whole purpose is a mud motor you don’t need a weed less prop it’s weedless already 😒🤦🏼your just wasting money I know it’s for the channel but it’s a swamp runner it should go through grass mud low amounts of water etc. if not return it and buy you a 29 hp vanguard mud buddy won’t regret it I can’t get it stuck
@JTgatoring
@JTgatoring 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the main point of thai longtail is the low-cost means of propulsion for your boat. That's the main reason people buy them. The other key feature is being air-cooled which leads to being able to handle the mud, shallow water, or heavily vegetated areas. It will do it without modifications, but if you add a few things to longtail, it does get completely weedless. This was testing a performance prop that is designed for speed. This is also a 1436 and that big of an engine would not work. Is your mud buddy a longtail or a surface drive?
