"Just a Closer Walk With Thee" is a classic hymn and jazz standard from the 1930s/40s. An old slave melody, it seems that Kenneth Morris heard this quite by accident and then published it to great acclaim. Let's explore the history and lyrics of this great song.

1 I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Refrain:
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
2 Thro' this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. (Refrain)
3 When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

I'm a former jehovah's witness and don't know any hymns or Christian music. I'm trying to teach myself about them. I love knowing the history of songs I'm coming to love. Thank you for helping me in my walk with the true Jesus.

@@jricardotorres8192 Do you still play and sing these beautiful hymns? I'm so sorry to hear you left Jesus. I hope you find your way back to the Lord. I'll pray for you.

This was one my Dad's favorite songs. As an American with ancestral roots in Louisiana, I can attest that this song is played quite frequently at funerals in Louisiana and throughout the Deep South overall. My Dad wasn't the best singer, but I remember him playing this song over and over when I was a little girl 35- 40 years ago. I lost my Dad almost 3 years ago when I was 42 and I still miss him. But by walking closer to Jesus, I know I will see him again.

❤This was another hymn that was popular in Australia introduced through the 1950’s Billy Graham crusade. For me it brings back memories of a particular soloist who often sang it. He had been saved at the Crusade. I think, Luke, that your Grandfather would be proud of your rendition on the piano. ❤

That song has been a favourite ever since childhood. I don't know where I first heard it but I do remember singing it in the back of the car with my younger sister & my father half turning in the driver's seat & telling us to shut it off, that we sounded like a couple of cats on a hot tin roof!! That has stuck with me all down through the years. God gave me a love of singing but not the voice to go with it. My request to Him has always been that when I get to heaven that this change & that I can be a part of the choir in heaven that sings the hallelujah chorus from Handel!! The worst part was yet to come... Some forty years later I was on my own working in my lounge room, listening to my favourite Christian songs & my cat had come in the back door & was lying on the carpet asleep until a particularly beautiful song came on that I just started to sing along to & the cat stood up, shook himself stuck his tail straight up in the air, gave me a really filthy look & stalked out never to return. He set up home with the neighbours. Yes, I still sing but try not to get too much into it if other people are around. It does hurt though, to have such a great love of singing & yet know that even your cat can't stay in the same house with you. So I sang tonight quietly along with you & the tears flowed because I don't have other friends to support me & this is why this song means so much as Jesus is my only true friend. Not that in any way do I feel cheated because He is also my brother as well as my Lord & Saviour & God. He is all I need!!

What I love about this song is its versatility. Whether played slowly or fast, the message holds meaning. It's beautiful as a simple, slow piano piece, jazzed up with a full band, or anything in between. It's a song and prayer that often comes to mind when I'm driving to work.

I first heard this as a piece of Jazz evan though I have been a Christian for most of my life (I am nearly 85 now) . However, I first heard it well into my Christian life and have used the words privately since. Since we have had a new Minister who is an amazing influence for all of us this hymn has, somehow, begun to mean more to me. It is one of the most meaningful Christian songs I know. If you look it's origin up on line you wil find it originated in the Alabama / New Orleans (ish) area of the USA and had been sung by huge numbers of people for many years. Ít is wonderful and this explanation which I have just seen was well done and worth listening to again. My congratulations to all concerned.

Thank you for the history of this song, and guy singing with the lyrics was nice too. It's the day after an attempt was made on Trump's life, and I thought of this song as Divine Intervention spared him so that we may be spared for very good reasons.

I love your story, the way you tell it. I pray I'm not overstepping when I repeat an excerpt from that story - giving you full credit, of course! - on my own channel, Esther Luttrell's Sunday Stories. I have a series titled Chapel on the Hill and, through Internet Archives, am presenting George B. Shea singing this beautiful song. Please let me know if I've imposed in any way! I simply want to share with my listeners (much fewer than yours, granted!) this incredible story that you've told so beautifully. I've included the link to this channel and, again, I do hope you don't mind. I'm scheduling it to be heard the evening (Central Time) Tuesday, July 23. God bless!

There's just one line here that I disagree with, bc it's actually non-biblical. I've always heard it with that line. Supposing it was written by non-reading slaves, all is forgiven. But whenever I do sing this song, i tend to alter the words a bit.
