Just a Few Acres Farm

2 жыл бұрын

You bet I got hay! Today the first loads of our purchased hay are coming, and I'm unloading them and stacking the bales in the barn. I'm also troubleshooting why our electric fence has lost its zap, and cooking a delicious dinner on the grill!
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours or accept visitors
-We do not sell from the farm
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

@@theda850two Sounds delicious. Had some pasture raised chicken, oven baked potatoes and bretagne sauce this evening. And it tastes so good. Cannot compare to the cheap chicken at the supermarked. Those bantams seems like a good chicken to raise, 8-10 dollars per year in feed for them google says. Is that correct? They seem like they are very efficient at converting feed to meat? Very intresting.

The joys of electric fence and hauling hay!! $40 a bale is great. I am working on my gas 656 with loader this week. The exhaust manifold was cracked. I got a new one from Steiner. Ordered on Monday, came on Wednesday. For a week, I shot penetrating oil on the bolts twice a day. They came out fairly easily. But the new manifold had a 2 1/2 inch outlet, and no hardware store carries this size, so I had to drive 20 miles to a plumbing supply store and then they didn't have the 2 1/2 to 2 adapter to get into the muffler, so two trips. I put the last 66 bales in the barn last night after hauling them to the farm Sunday. Thought I would take the rest of the day off, but my son in law needed help, so I hauled 12 semi loads of corn from the field to the bins, taking an empty truck back each time. Three steps up and down out of the truck is great fun as we age. Of course the roads are single lane gravel with steep ditches and telephone poles just aching to catch a semi trailer. Farming sure is fun.

One of the things I love about being on a farm Pete is that you really have to know a bit about everything otherwise you’ll spend a fortune on repairs. Carpentry, fencing, plumbing, mechanical, horticulture, livestock the list goes on of things that happen on a farm. Like you I have a good base of knowledge and am not shy about having to learn something new. Thank god for KZfaq and now we get to share our experiences on KZfaq too. Chad.

Spent hours and hours over the years walking the pasture fence for our dairy herd. Chopping weeds and brush off the wire with the hedge clippers, cutting the grass with a gas powered weed wacker, dragging limbs off the fence every time time the wind blew, and cutting downed tress off with the chainsaw. Generally got Poison Ivy as a bonus. The cows have a designated fence checker who alerts the rest of the herd when the fence is not working.

Simple way to find a short in an electric fence is to use an old am radio, the static will get worse the closer you get to the short, you can actually hear it pop through the radio when you get close

I always look forward to each video you put out Pete, thank you. One of our beautiful cats, Angie, a gorgeous and sweet calico, mostly white with markings on her face and tail only, she had green eyes that were just so lovely, well she got out the other night and wouldn’t you know it a coyote got her and we discovered her on the front lawn. She was really gorgeous like Ezra. We live in suburban SoCal, lived here 7 years and never once saw a coyote, but apparently they are here. We do have a pair of hawks that were displaced here when the Calabasas fire broke out 3 years ago… have seen raccoons, an occasional possum and of course reddish grey squirrels…but never a coyote. She’ll always be in our hearts though, just one unlucky night.

I was checking the electric fence and it was for hogs so they tend to root dirt on it. I cleared the short and as I did I brushed my forehead on the feeder line. The path to ground was my central nervous system and it hit like a jackhammer. I’m flopping around on the ground and hoping that no one witnessed my flailing. “Ho Ho Ho, Ha Hah Ho!” My buddy Randy was nearly in convulsions of laughter at my predicament.

My first thought about the short in the electric fence is that it's caused by tall grass, alfalfa or weeds out in the field touching the fence. When I was young my dad would send us out with corn knives to cut the weeds along the electric fence. We had to do that every few weeks to keep up with the weeds.

We were lining high. Great Vid and Great way of life. Respects!
