Today I'm reviewing an on loan wrist watch, the Shinola Runwell 47mm. The Shinola Runwell 47mm is a nicely designed watch that is unfortunately much too large and much too expensive, coming from a company that is surrounded in controversy due to some deceptive marketing strategies in the past. Would I recommend the watch? Maybe, if you love the style and can find it on sale.

I like what Shinola as a company is doing. Take the PR and marketing issues out of it and they are creating jobs for people who lost them due to the recession and the failure that is the US auto industry. I appreciate that as someone who lives in the Midwest. As a watch fan I couldn't stand their prices for quartz movements. Now that they have an automatic I bought one within a month of the release.

Shinola will eventually fail for the same reason General Motors failed. They expect people to buy from them out of sympathy, sentiment, and nostalgia rather than because of the quality of their product.

I agree. I am willing to pay more for the made in America aspect of it. Every watch has a story. And not everyone wants to spend thousands of dollars on a Swiss watch. I also like the stuff from Detroit Watch Company. I actually prefer them better than Shinola.

I have the chronograph version of this watch. Love the size. Big watch isn’t for everyone but I dig it. Good looking watch.

Good video. My 2 cents: I think Shinola has some good looking dial / color combinations. Agree the prices are high and the 47 is way too big, but I like the look of my 41mm Runwell. Purchased it (full price) when Shinola was a new company and long before I knew anything about horology. Biggest complaint is battery life. Most of my quartz batteries last 3-5 years. The Shinola...18-24 months! Don't bother to replace it anymore, so just sits in the bottom of the watch box.

Great video. It’s a beautiful timepiece even after 5 years of doing the video. The watch really holds its own as a classic design. I agree if you have really tiny wrist this watch isn’t the right fit. It’s all about proportions and scale. Thank you for doing the review!

Thanks for the review! I agree, 47 mm is WAY too big. A few weeks ago, I purchased one of their moonphase, 41 mm watches with an alligator strap for 270 at one of their outlet stores. I love it and 41 mm is much more appropriate.

Mine (Runwell 47mm) quit working after dropping onto a solid oak floor. No, it was not the battery coincidentally dying. The quartz movement didn't hold up to a relatively short fall onto a floor that is not as hard as concrete. Runwell 47mm. It has been a nice, easy to read watch with daily use for about 7 years, for which I only had to change the battery on 2 occasions. For that, I would say it served me well enough and I am planning to replace it with another Shinola if I don't wind up saving for a Ball.

Not a bad review, but it seems that your biggest complaint is the size of a watch that comes in 2 sizes. This, being the large version, is large. So, size would be a personal opinion. Just like, in my opinion, small watches look feminine. So, personal taste aside, it is definitely pricey for what it is. It is well executed. It looks pretty much like any good field watch should. I agree that the case finish could have a little brushing to go with the polished look. Anyway, keep up the good work and I hope I don't sound too critical. I appreciate anyone that reviews a product that I might be interested in.

The price and the size are really the only complaints I have with this watch, if we take the questionable marketing tactics off the table as a gripe. Otherwise it's a pretty nice field watch, and as you said, there is a smaller size available but this is the one I had to review so this is my perspective on this specific version.

Beautiful watch what I love is the pocket watch look for this watch you guys criticize them over some marketing who’s cares all of your cars are imported parts from all over the world and I believe $550 for this watch is cheap sense most people buy a Tag Heuer formula 1 quartz movement that starts out at $1000🧐

I agree with most of what you say. I am not from Detroit but I do try to support cities trying to get back on track. However, I just don't think they are worth the asking price. A friend of mine has been buying these watches at super discounted prices in various department stores. I do like the pocket watch look and I like the lug style What would I pay? It would have to be $200 or less. I do think the watches are well made, however to me, they are just fashion watches.

There is no controversy...it’s just stupid laws to be able to say your product is American made. You have to use a certain percentage of American parts, which is ridiculous because most everything American companies make will have some parts made overseas especially when it comes to electronics where a foreign company has proprietary parts. Most watch companies have quartz watches that cost over $1000 & everybody it’s been running down Shinola because they have quartz watches that are 550 to 750$.

I like this watch and even the fact that it’s 47mm, I’m cool with it. Don’t care about the marketing stuff. I see them for $299, seems like a fair price.

The 41mm is the only option, absolutely. Probably as a chrono. Shame they don’t make the automatic in as many versions in 39.5 as they make it in 45mm.

The strap on this one is made from Horween leather, so that’s top notch. Horween are a sixth generation tannery in Chicago

I have a Coronado backpack made of Horween leather. I can say with confidence it is a top tier leather. Very high quality.

I like the dail. I dont like the price, and would prefer a mechanical movement. And, I think the hands need to be longer.

The size of the watch seems silly to complain about. They come in different sizes and they fit men of a medium to larger build.

Thanks. Interesting review of this brand regardless of my lack of interest in buying. Bottom line seems to me, Shinola is a “premium” fashion watch company also marketing other products. Shinola is the brainchild of Tom Kartsotis, who created the Fossil company (along with his brother Kosta). I think it curious he bought the rights to the Shinola name (formerly shoeshine products) to apply to his new watch brand, which seems like a strange choice. Personally, I have negative connotations when I think the name Shinola for several reasons. Regardless, Kartsotis is an interesting read if you like learning about entrepreneurs.

Shinola makes good watches. The only people hating are the snobs using the excuse that Shinola overcharges for their pieces. All watch manufactures do the exact same thing. Look at Rolex SMH

Thanks for reviewing this. I have wanted to appreciate Shinola for so long, and while I do feel they have an aesthetic appeal, I just can't get on board with them no matter how much I want to like the brand. After doing extensive research on this manufacturer, my opinion is Shinola is expensive Fossil.

For every quartz watch that has a screw down crown, there’s 100 different models that don’t. It’s uncommon for quartz watches to have this feature. Is that difficult to understand?

Good review. I have the 41mm that I bought at a Shinola outlet. $200 and I think that’s a good price for them. Also I am interested in the 47mm if owner wants to sell for cheap.

Looks like an oversized Timex with a Sapphire crystal but no indiglo. Think I'd stick with the Timex, better utilitarian features and a real history.

The movements are by RONDA, which is Swiss, but in this instance it is made in the USA.

I don't think anyone can pull off a 47mm watch. I have 8 inch wrists and I still wouldn't go anywhere near that size. It may look less absurd on a huge wrist, but it will still look massive. The relative size stops mattering when you get into pocket watch territory. But whatever. If someone likes it, bless them.

The cost is an issue for me at least. 500 plus for a quartz watch that does not have a old high end name is too high. But they are on the secondary market for like new or new for 300 I just bought mine for 295 in the box and all papers. The watch is well made and I like the clean simple watch design.

Country of origin means nothing and doesn't directly translate to quality or shit. QC/reputation/brand/etc. are all more important than physically where the factory is located. Dollar-for-dollar, Chinese and Taiwanese-made pocket knives are on par or superior to MiUSA knives. Reate, Rike and We Knives build phenomeal knives. Almost any pocket knife in the mid- to high-end is made from titanium. In less than ten years ball bearing pivots have proliferated thruout the space, from a luxury feature reserved for hand made knives to mass market. Prices on integral folding knives have dropped to a third or fourth of their initial cost a few years ago. The watch industry moves too slow, doesn't innovate and customers fap to hard to the Swiss big boys. I am not a fan of what I see around this world.

I learned something about a watch brand I knew nothing about, so that's important. I believe I saw this brand/watch in Cosco. My own observation on this particular watch: aside from the color and size, it kind of reminds me of the watch from Pulp Fiction. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j6yke82HmcmYpas.html

It’s essentially styled after a field watch, just a giant version of one. That’s why it reminds you of the Pulp Fiction watch. In the film, Butch’s Father was in the military so it makes sense he would have worn a field watch.

I like it, but, I would not pay anything over $250.00 for this watch. The deception to me is irrelevant because what company in this country doesn't deceive and yes, that was meant to be rhetorical in nature. With all that being said, there are just too many other watch companies out there making good, solid watches for under 500$. And I like them better than Shinola. Simply not a major interest for me.

The size means crap. Your watch you are reviewing is 47mm but I have a 41mm and its perfect size. So size is nothing you can comment on as an over all issue.

Good review! I have very little issue with Shinola. They just weren't very careful with their legal, PR and marketing. I think they thought they can use the "Made In USA" as a marketing line while having enough plausible deniability to skirt the FTC definition. The watches are quite solid and are indeed assembled in Detroit. Unfortunately, this forces them to charge too high a premium for quartz watches.

Yeah the marketing tactics were questionable, and the price is too high, but the designs are good and the watch seems well made. If a person can find them on sale for +/- $250 I would say it's not a bad pickup.
