I don’t understand all the hate Shinola gets. Pretty much every watch you buy is technically way overpriced. Shinola is a lifestyle brand more so than a watch, leather, and bicycle manufacturing company. Being from northeast of Detroit and having spent time in their midtown store and the argonaut building itself makes this watch have great meaning to me. I love my two Shinola watches and like I said they allow me to carry a piece of hometown with me wherever I go.

Watch pricing is a matter of marketing. Rolex can get thousands for their Swiss-made watches, yet they are not 10 times the quality of other watches, even when they're 10 times the price. Watch value is in the mind of the consumer, since the cheapest quartz watch keeps time as well as the luxury mechanical ones. I'm sure Shinola strategically prices their watches. They might be sold for less, but then they wouldn't be a "luxury watch" and the value would be cheapened. I have 9 watches, including 3 mechanical watches. Of those three, two are automatic and one is hand-wound. All of my mechanical watches have stopped or had to have service over the past few years. My most reliable mechanical watch, a Seiko, lasted 14 years before stopping. Two of my mechanical watches stopped twice each. Every time I've had to have one of the mechanical watches serviced it cost--a lot. Two of my mechanical watches are in the shop right now. The rest of my watches are quartz. The quartz watches are reliable as a group--only one, a Stuhrling, needing anything more than an occasional battery replacement. I love my mechanical watches, but, it can't be denied, quartz is more reliable.

I'm disappointed that you didn't open the case. Mostly because looking at it, I'm just not sure how it's done. Looking at the catalog, the 4 nubs around the outside looked like they may have been screws, but I'm not seeing it. There are definitely screws near the lugs; is that how you'd open it? I'm not 100% sure I'd agree that Ronda AG has a high regard in the watch industry. To my mind, companies like Gucci and Movado have moved to using Ronda movements because they're cheaper (usually because they're assembled in the Philippines instead of Switzerland). When I open a "Swiss" watch, and I know it's an expensive piece (eg. Gucci) I definitely think poorly of Gucci for downgrading their mechanism. When I see a more moderately priced time-piece that uses the Ronda mechanism, I generally have a good impression of the piece... so I guess it has a lot more to do with expectation.

I've taken apart this exact watch. Movement: Swiss Parts assembled in the US Case back is stamped China. So, basically this watch is "Assembled" in Detroit. I think the only thing that is really "made" in Detroit is the strap? Handsome watch, but the whole US/Detroit is a bit much, but no more abused than "Swiss Made" on other brands.

Finally got my hands on one of these the other day. When I spotted it in the line-up of jobs to do, I grabbed it. Having actually had a chance to open the piece, I have two further things to add to this review... the first is, Detroit Steel, baby. The case is THICK. I mean, maybe, 3mm thick. Should have measured, but I've never before had a time piece in my hands that had a case as thick as this. The inside mechanism is everything that is promised. I mean, I'm a Canadian, but I really appreciate the idea of a company ethic that says "let's put America back to work" and... yes, the mechanism is stamped Swiss Parts, assembled in USA. Also, like everything else, there are different grades of mechanism. The Shinola mechanism is clearly a good one, I believe it was 6 Jewels, everything was stainless steel with gold plating -very rust resistant. The mechanism on the inside is, in a way, prettier than the watch on the outside. ...I don't specifically have anything against a Quartz mechanism. To my mind, you can have an automatic, never put in a battery, but when you need servicing, it's more expensive. Makes up for the money you save on batteries in a Quartz watch. I think I would have been happier if the mechanism had been one that accommodated a larger cell; there was certainly space for it. Anyways. I'd still be quite happy to buy one of these at $550.
@eric362078 жыл бұрын
Cases are Chinese. The quartz mvmt is a crappy swiss Ronda. There are $50 watches with the Ronda. This brand is overpriced, over-hyped rubbish. www.freep.com/story/money/business/2016/06/17/shinola-altering-marketing-claims-after-ftc-rebuke/86044878/
@jackhammerjohnny38558 жыл бұрын
No dude. The mechanism is a GOOD Swiss Ronda. I've said elsewhere in this review, that whether you like Ronda or dislike it has a lot to do with perspective. If I find a Ronda in a $1500 Gucci, I'm pretty disappointed. If I find it in, say, a Guess watch, I'm pretty impressed. The particular mechanism that Shinola is using is a top end Ronda -I would be very surprised if you could find a watch that uses this particular movement in it for under $300 USD. The mechanism Shinola uses in the Runwell is a stainless steel, gold plated, 7 jewel mechanism. As for the case, etc... I don't disagree with you... exactly. But, I have to point out the reality of the situation. A lot of high end manufacturers are cutting corners, and their quality is dropping drastically. I was opening all these Coach watches, and was very impressed... bought my wife one. When I finally opened it, was shocked that the mechanism quality had tanked... and two years later, the mechanism Coach is using is exactly the mechanism I'd expect to see in a Coach KNOCKOFF. The downward trend of their quality is a precipice that would give an experienced mountaineer vertigo. I'm also opening more and more Swiss watches by established Switzerland companies, and more and more often I'm seeing Chinese manufactured cases. Oh noes, Shinola uses a Chinese made case? Well, shit... so does fucking Tissot, or Movado. ...worse, the knockoffs coming out of China are probably being made using moulds, specs, or parts made for the actual watch that is being knocked off. ...but still; the case on a Shinola is fucking SOLID. Made in China? Sure. But, it's a serious piece of hardware. When assholes like Donald Trump stop farming out manufacturing jobs to China, and instead hire American labourers... or, consumers are willing to pay the money for a Swiss Made, or American Made, or ... fuck, Canadian made consumer goods... then this will be a valid complaint.

It’s called commercialism you make your product as cheap as possible and sell as high as you can, but to blame trump? This outsourcing started many many years ago! Trumps only been in office a cpl years and I’ve been talking to Tim in Bangladesh about my cable bill for the last 15 years and it started with nafta many years ago trump is no different than any other business man he makes the most profit possible in his businesses but to say trump is responsible for outsourcing is incorrect and a cheap shot at best! Ford just announced its hiring 700 more Americans to one of its factory’s due to the trump administration pressure and threat of extreme taxation of thier products comming from Mexico so trump is bringing back jobs

+M_Bergeron I confess to knowing nothing about watches, so I ask, Is quartz "really" more accurate than automatics? (I way love an accurate watch over one that's less accurate but has more bells and whistles.)
+SatanISintheWorld! GetRightWithTheLORDJesus!! A quartz watch is, without a doubt, more accurate than an automatic. Here's a breakdown of the technology... A quartz crystal will vibrate at a constant speed when you run electricity through it. A circuit counts vibrations, and when a seconds worth is detected, it signals the step-motor to fire, advancing the watch one second. That 1 second interval will be constant, constantly. In good working order, a Quartz watch will not lose time. A mechanical watch operates on an uncoiling mainspring. You either hand wind the spring, or an unbalanced fly winds it for you (automatic or self winding watch). Some clever monkey figured out how to match the speed at with that mainspring uncoils with 1 second... but there are all sorts of factors that will influence that uncoiling speed. Imagine, if you will, how a watch that is adjusted for speed in a cool workshop might run fast in a hot climate. It is expected that, even in good working condition, a mechanical watch will lose (or gain) a few minutes a month.

I purchased a Shinola Runwell 36mm Men's Watch recently. I didn't want a 47mm wall clock on my wrist. Mine shipped with a Women's watch band. 36mm is the most common size for every Men's watch in the history of watches. Shinola insists that it's a unisex watch and that it always is made with a Women's watch band, although it was listed as a Men's band on the website. They offered me a discount on another band ($50 for a band that retails at $95), which is an insult at best. It's a $500 Men's watch---it should come with a men's watch band. I wanted to help this fledgling watch company succeed. If I had to do it over again, I would have bought another company's watch. Shinola doesn't stand by its products.
@bucknut20008 жыл бұрын
You should of tried the 41mm.
@jwg12345567898 жыл бұрын
I didn't want the 41mm. It's too large. I'd say the obvious "should have" is that they should send a mens watch band for a watch listed as a mens watch. It was their mistake and they didn't own up to it. Shinola ultimately replaced the ill-sized women's band with a mens band, but it took about twenty complaints.
@Tom-vy3cb6 жыл бұрын
The 41mm is a pretty standard size. 36mm is rather small for a mans watch

Sorry Watch Report, but you lost me at around 12:50 when you said that you wished for an automatic movement instead of a quartz which is very doable at the price point. I only buy automatic movements. But I am considering this watch for it's visual appeal. I have a very large wrist. I own Rolex, IWC, Omega, Jaeger, on and on ... but for $595, as of Oct 2022, there is no way that an automatic movement can be supplied on a watch with a sapphire crystal and a quality band with the overall workmanship of this watch at a price point under $1K. You are absolutely wrong, and have no credibility as it regards your stance on that topic.

I don't think $550 is out of line for the watch. I think you could pay twice that for a Gucci, get the same mechanism (except assembled in the Philippines instead of USA), and not get a sapphire crystal. You could also buy a Bulova Precisionist and pay over $600, for a Japanese mechanism.
@StephenRoseDuo8 жыл бұрын
Gucci quite frankly makes shitty watches with an inflated price tag that takes advantage of the fashion minded rather than one of a real watch lover. Bulova on the other hand makes a unique sweeping seconds hand, exceptionally accurate quartz movement. Shinola are none of these things.
@jackhammerjohnny38558 жыл бұрын
I'm entirely in agreement on Gucci. I totally disagree regarding Bulova. You need to understand that Bulova has changed hands several times in the last half-century, and haven't been "good" for about 20 years. I had hoped that they would stop trading on their reputation and start making good watches again. I thought, maybe, the Precisionist was exactly that. But... I've opened several Precisionists, and what's inside is pretty underwhelming... and it's not like making a Quartz movement accurate is difficult. What would tempt me to buy a Shinola, is that it's an American watch, actually assembled in America. A lot of what makes this appealing to me, is the feels... which is silly, but not really. Like, I was just in Hawaii, and they're famous for their Wood Watches. Great. Those watches are assembled in Canada. Canada has a watch company, called Momentum, but they buy their mechanisms from outside sources. Shinola is built around a vision of bringing craftmanship back to the USA, and the have hired Americans and trained them to be craftsman. ...I'm actually Canadian, not American. Similarly, I like the Titan watch, which is a product of India. Why? Because when you crack one of those babies open, it has a (rather nice) Titan made mechanism, assembled in India. Not like Skagen, a "Denmark" watch, with a mediocre Japanese mechanism.

All in all, I have eleven years experience in the industry. I've opened this very same model of watch, had a chance to evaluate the build on the case, and inspect the mechanism. When I tell you this time piece is worth $500, then you best believe it's true.

A Hamilton or Tissot at that price point would also be a good choice. A modern Seiko ain't shit. If you're going to put money into a Seiko watch, buy an Antique from the 80s, or even better, the 70s. A 30 or 40 year old Seiko is a fucking Juggernaut; it just can't be stopped. My Tissot is the 150th anniversary Le Locle automatic, it's a thousand dollar time piece, and the pride of my collection. My Seiko is a #5 Automatic, and I'm sure it's from the mid or early 70s. Still, if I ever find myself with $500 that I can drop on a watch, I would absolutely pick up a Runwell.
