That's crazy! I've been playing around, on and off with piano for less than a year, and thought that most of this is self explanatory, I suppose it's just easier to visualise with piano.

Learning anything in public can be frightening. Fear of faiure is what stops most of us from growing. We long to make the music we hear in our heads (and hearts). The fear of looking foolish holds us back, but also drives us forward tward our goal; becoming musicians. Thanks for taking the risk Mr. Anderton. We are all on the same journey.

I think it's really gracious and generous of both Justin and Lee to share these lessons. Cheers to them both. Learning can be intimidating sometimes, more so when you're learning before an audience so I really respect Lee's willingness to do these. FWIW, I've found that no matter what I *think* I know (which truthfully isn't much lol), I always find something to takeaway from lessons like these. A few short years into playing guitar I often found myself jamming with less experienced, or even beginning guitarists; I learned very quickly to never sell them short or have a condescending attitude. Soo many times in such jams I've heard wondrous things come off the fingertips of such players and ask *them* "Hey, what was that thing you did there just now? That was really cool..." Maybe they didn't know what they did. Maybe it was a happy accident. Or they could replicate it but not have any understanding of what they had played from a music theory standpoint but it sounded cool. The point is that I've been able to learn and apply new things from the humblest of sources. If you're someone in a teaching role, never underestimate your own ability to learn from those you are teaching, no matter their experience level. Music isn't a contest, it's a brotherhood/sisterhood, and I love being a part of it. Gee I think I just rambled lol. Sorry 'bout that. 🤘🏼

I'm not so much stuck in a rut as learning the right way to use chords and scales for real music, rather than just practice routines. You've given me inspiration, Justin and Captain, and, with the lessons I'm working on from JustinGuitar, I'm finally getting somewhere with my playing. These lessons are helping me to internalize the fact that it's a long way, with lots of practice, to get to my goal but I can do some interesting music along the way, not just the somewhat dreary finger exercises. Thank you!

This was really inciteful. Despite the sea of stuff online that's supposed to help you learn, stuff as simple and useful as this seems so rare. In this video I felt I was finally told : "this is what the stuff you are trying to learn actually is, how it works, why you are learning it, and how it will help you" in a way that I never have been before

You've got to feel for Lee. Music theory is quite tricky to get your head around. We've all been there. It's sometimes like hitting your head against a wall. But maybe it's just me. I totally agree about the looper pedal, though. It's essential.

I agree. I played for 20 years and never really grasped theory, then one day, ij watched a KZfaq video by Marks bass lessons, episode 32 i think. In that video he did the one thing ALL music teachers should do, he explained WHY you need to learn, scales, chords, modes, and etc. If every teacher explained the reason why we should learn things straight off, it would make a lot more sense, and keep us frolm banging our heads against the wall for years.

This series is just what the doctor ordered. hit a block a while back and had to force myself into a minimum of 10 minutes of daily practice. After watching this series I spent the last two days playing for well over 90 minutes each time and getting to bed around 1 AM. At my age I thought it would make me sluggish in the morning, to the contrary I woke up invigorated with the previous night's practice. Same thing today, and here at work now I can't wait to get home for more guitar magic. I hope you keep this series rolling. I think the two of you make a good pair, many of us are closer to The Captain's ability/knowledge and can relate to the pitfalls he is dealing with. I hope you keep doing this series.

Weird day. I saw this yesterday, got a few minutes in and life got in the way, but I had a bit of a jam today and over about 2 hours I actually worked out the major scale. It was by accident, I hit a note that was not in the pentatonic (I was in e minor, hit the 5th fret on g string), but worked with others, so I explored it a bit in position 3. I sounded almost instantly more articulate. Then I went hunting for it in the other positions, and after that I found a few more notes. Now I'm watching this learning all the theory behind it.

I went from learning very basic piano for a year at age 10-11. When I picked up the guitar some 5 years later, it was extremely confusing to find an instrument that had the same pitched note in several places, and that a simple octave of the major scale went from a logical 12345678 steps on the white keys, to this obscure pattern across three strings, and a C major chord could be fingered in what felt like 45 ways, involving all of the fingers on the hand, instead of a simple "C" skip one "E" skip one "G" with three fingers. Not to mention that the B string shifted the pattern a half step, so you had to be really careful every time you came near it.

If you learn the major scale properly (ie intervals/modes, key center) , you can learn anything within music theory, it's the foundation of absolutely everything. Even in complex jazz harmony, tritone subs, modulation, chord borrowing, secondary dominants all relate to clever use of the major scale. This vid is great, and so well thought out!

It's fascinating watching Lee. I have been playing for 25 years, but neglected theory in favour of "feeling" for most of that. It is only in the last few years I realised that you can have both and as you put it, the scales etc are the vocabulary of your playing. Knowing lots of words won't restrict your use of language, it gives you more options!

Great vid Justin, you cleared up another piece of my musical puzzle. I knew the chords of a key because I was told what they were years ago, but I never knew why some were major and some were minor. Repeating what you did on my little keyboard and seeing what notes are played as I ascent up the scale of C using only the 1,3 and 5th notes, now I see why some chords of a key are major and some are minor. Dang, all these years of not knowing why. Sweeeeet!!!

Nice video guys. I would say that a set fingering for a scale is good for a beginner/intermediate player when challenged with having to play in a different key (by a singer or horn player or example). Being able to move the starting note and play the learned fingering immediately without having to work out all the new notes can be very useful.

Around the 25:00 mark it may have been useful for Justin to point out that for any major scale, the major chords in it are always the "blues chords", ie I, IV and V. That pattern of the root notes is familiar to any guitar player, so for chords in a key, the blues chords are major and realistically, everything else in the key is minor.

this lesson is brilliant. Am I the only one that feels like they are in the exact same guitar boat as the captain? Plenty of chops, very able musician, but plenty to learn. also a little impatient... waiting for a light-bulb moment, but realizing there is always something to learn. Learning guitar is more about a million tiny little light bulb moments and one day you are just able to do what used to be difficult, and are overwhelmed by the next thing. I really enjoy watching the progress.

I wish I could take personal lessons from Justin. I'd be miles better than I am now.

JustinGuitar hey thanks for the reply! I definitely have been to your site a few times and probably will purchase the blues pack in the near future, but I feel like there's some things that a live teacher can help with that can see what I'm struggling with. My worst by far is my vibrato in a bend. It kills me lol.
