There's also Paul Gilbert - he's an awesome teacher too, so much energy + he pulls the best "guitar face" and really enjoys what he's doing. Could you imagine having these 2 guys as your personal tutor? I respect Justin and Paul so much.

Paul Gilbert isn't really a KZfaq teacher though :P But he's awesome, would love to subscribe to his teaching thing on Artistworks but in the age of KZfaq we (I?) get used to get things for free :(

Doob Oio - yeah, you're right PG isn't really YT. Point taken. I equate YT to "online" really. PG is online, Justin is YT. I have donated to Justin many times over the years though - you could do the same, I'm sure he'd appreciate it. He used to write back personally to thank, but I guess he has too little time to do that now, perhaps. Always worth a donation though.

Brilliant series! Been playing for 45 yrs, this is the best lesson on this I have ever seen. It was like my eyes were finally opened. Many thanks to both of you. Watching Lee go through this with us, struggle, ask questions, and learn, makes this more personal on both ends of the video.

Justin is an exceptional teacher, but you need someone who is going to go along with him to make these videos work the way they do. Lee is more willing of showing his limitations and work thru lessons than the vast majority of people. Great video!

Yes, theory can be fun. I had these eureka-moments Lee's having about six months ago. After playing for over 25 years I started touching on theory for the first time. Just the basic stuff put so many things into place and now further learning is more understanding than just memorization.

Well done captain!!! I also had this eureka moment about 2 years ago after playing for 15 years and not knowing this stuff. It was actually the playing of danish Pete and Mick Taylor that inspired me to go learn, and it was Music Is Win that did the teaching. The power of KZfaq! Also great work Justin :)

I was exactly like the Captain on this one: "Is the 1,4,5 always the major????????" - "Make a note!"
@jake2355
@jake2355 6 жыл бұрын
It may be a good idea to note that that only applies in a major key. When in a minor key, the 1, 4, 5 is minor and the 2 is the diminished chord instead of the 7th. It’s all relative but nice to be aware of
@fraenkiboii

@austindean4487
@austindean4487 6 жыл бұрын
Generally when you're referring to a key you are always talking about the major key. Even if you play a song that is all minor chords (F#m, Bm, C#m) you might want to say you are playing in F#m key but that's the relative minor(6th) of A, so you are in the key of A. As long as the folks you're jamming with know what you're talking its copacetic either way though.

I’ve been writing music for years and because of guitar, I had to learn a bit of theory. I had my own breakthroughs recently and it was to do with chords, scales and chords scale based on the root note. However. This series has been very helpful in piecing together the fretboard a lot more than I was managing on my own. In terms of playability the Captain is far superior, but I feel with this video I can progress much quicker. Superb.

“And I don’t care...” A minute later “OMG Write that down...” So cool to see other people have that moment that I think we all have. This is where you can jam on a key instead of one of you having to learn a song o you can play the song together. Music gets to be so much more fun when that happens!

Just think of it like this. The seven note major scale will go 1-major 2-minor 3-minor 4-major 5-major 6-minor 7-diminished and then it all repeats. The minor scale starts on the sixth note of the major scale. So start on the 6 I wrote which is a minor and continue if you want to do the minor scale.

Great stuff. When Danish Pete was trying to teach Lee he would go off on tangents of his own on to of the Captain's and it would spiral out of control. Justin keeps Lee on track. I presume that John Mayer song is really in C# minor - where C# is the one (i) A is the six (VI) and E is the three (III). The Captain's mind will be blown.
