Follow MprooV on Twitter / mproovapp #agadmator The 12th Annual Linares Super Tournament held from February 23rd to March 14th, 1994 was the first Category XVIII event ever held. Fourteen of the world's best players, including both World Champions, competed in a round robin format. The participants were (in order of Elo): Garry Kasparov (2805), Anatoli Karpov (2740), Alexey Shirov (2715), Vishwanathan Anand (2715), Vladimir Kramnik (2710), Vassily Ivanchuk (2710), Gata Kamsky (2695), Boris Gelfand (2685), Evgeny Bareev (2685), Alexander Beliavsky (2650), Veselin Topalov (2640), Judit Polgar (2630), Joel Lautier (2625), and Miguel Illescas-Cordoba (2590). When asked about the strength of the tournament, Kasparov famously stated that the winner could consider himself the world champion of tournament chess. Ironically, it was to be Karpov, his longtime rival, who would be the man of destiny, culminating in the greatest single tournament performance of all time! Karpov won the whole ball of wax, undefeated with an astonishing 11/13!!

Karpov is a great positional player. Not the type of guy who will wow you with crazy attacks and sacrifices. He just dismantles you slowly but surely. Such style is somehow boring but very efficient and effective. What a waste it was to not see a match between him and Fischer...

@@schess75Is that the one where Anand had to play a grueling candidates tourmament then imediately play a fresh Karpov? I recall he wasnt happy about that as he had no recovery time and did not play his best chess. Karpov was still strong, just Anand could not give his best challenge.

Can you post the game between James Tarjan and Kosteniuk? The game against her husband Pavel Tregubov was also pretty awesome. Tarjan is 65 years old and wreaked havoc at the Isle of Man with his most notorious win against Kramnik. #suggestion

In the mid-90s, Kramnik was very aggressive. He used to play the Sveshnikov and the Classical Sicilian as well as the Meran and even the Dutch ! Then he refined his style and became more positional.

Karpov defeated me in Linares-94 where he scored 11 out of 13. I got into an inferior endgame. However, it did not seem awful. Then I made some appropriate moves and could not understand how I had managed to get into a losing position. Although I was already in the world top ten, I failed to understand it even after the game. This was one of the few games after which I felt like a complete idiot with a total lack of chess understanding! Such things happen very rarely to top level players. Usually you realise why you have lost. This moment defies description - there is something almost imperceptible about it and so characteristic of Karpov. - Vladimir Kramnik When having an edge, Karpov often marked time and still gained the advantage! I don't know anyone else who could do that, it's incredible. I was always impressed and delighted by this skill. When it looked like it was high time to start a decisive attack, Karpov played a3, h3, and his opponent's position collapsed. - Vladimir Kramnik

Karpov gets into a lot of time trouble but he's the strongest player of the last forty years IMO . Bobby ducked him and I think most of his games vs Kasparov were winning much of the way

I would sum it up that way Kasparov was the strongest player, whereas Karpov was the best player. Kasparov himself kinda acknowledges it in "My Great Predecessors".

You have to be kidding. Karpov never hit 2800, kasparov was over 2800 from 1990 onwards. Kasparov had 17 2820+ tournament performances Karpov had 4. Kasparov beat Karpov in 3 world championship matches, and drew 1. Kasparov beat Shirov, Adams, Bareev and Gelfand by 50-0! In decisive games. So can you please explain how Karpov was stronger?

Karpov was very good, 2nd most successful chess player, but no way stronger than Garry. Kasparov proved it through his whole career. Head to head also, though that waa closer.

No he had 7 Whites and 6 Blacks or 7 Blacks and 6 Whites. But like most players, he's way more efficient as White.

Again the same mistake ;-)Karpov won his first six games, not seven. Then he drew with Kasparov as Black after getting good chances in a Caro-Kann (!)
