Every sector of the engineering industry in India has suffered because of lack of knowledge in metallurgy. All our IITs and NML etc and other research institutes have paid lip service to research in this field. Mining equipment, tools, high temperature applications have suffered. I am sure that Indian diaspora in above expertise are available and it will be cheaper for us to pay very attractive salary, be it on probation and contract basis, to these individuals. India need not steal tech but use our own people? Will the govt act?

India 's share of R&D be it defence or pharma, ICT, mechanical, electrical, electronics is less than 1% of GDP. Without R&D, talent pooling, luring the talents abroad to come to India, live, provide atleast a quality of living and amenities atleast in a planned smart cities is a key when it comes to get back a small percentage of our enginners, doctors, highly skilled IIT pass outs. The issue is not funds, but the lack of knowhow about the alloys and their manufacturing and the ability of industries to manufacture these components with the required precision and quality. Its not easy. China which has a much larger and diverse industrial base than India tasted success in developing a domestic jet engine only recently. And they might have relied on industrial espionage of Western firms to get some of the knowhow.

US congress will never give the green signal to transfer aero engine technology to any country. Only seven countries make aero-engines on their own and Ukraine is one among the seven. Even the sea gaurdian drones leased to india is now also operated by general atomics. Pakistan F-16 r now also monitored by US personel directly who r based in Pak air bases 24/7/365. That was the agreement between pakis and Americans. US fears that pakistan would allow third parties to check out F 16 tech. For all the keyboard warriors going on a rant here in comment section, let me tell you, you can't even imagine to grasp the complexity of the physics, thermodynamics and metallurgy that goes behind these jet engines. The part everyone forgets is we have very limited funding compared to other nations and also that Kaveri has not been a complete failure, it's just that its dry thrust is not at a level desired for powering our jets. It is however good enough to power UAVs which is already being worked on in form of program GHATAK UAVs. Moreover, with the acquisition of full ToT of GE-414 we'll get the know how of the critical and advanced hot core technology of the jet engines required for higher thrust. So with due respect, I'll request everyone to be patient and not criticize where you don't have in-depth knowledge to back up your critique.

@@changappalarny4701 India does not have a capable private aerospace ecosystem. The Western nations had it from the very beginning. Our private firms can _manufacture,_ but do not have the ability to _design_ a jet engine or a rocket engine or a fighter jet from the ground up. And these metallurgy stuff is quite tricky in jet engines, and is a closely guarded secret by Western companies. You need to know what is the right alloy to be employed for certain components, or they will fail in operational use. We may ask Russia for help in this, but then their jet engines are notorious due to their poor reliability (again down to manufacturing quality and metallurgy). Without hand holding by govt organizations, private aerospace industry cannot take off here. For that matter, I have seen rumours that ISRO's new semi-cryogenic (aka kerolox) engine has been facing delays due to manufacturing issues. ISRO doesn't manufacture these liquid propellant engines and other rocket components. They give the designs (in this case, bought from Ukraine) to private firms like Godrej & Boyce or L&T to manufacture them, and these companies have been struggling to produce some key components with the required precision. So, the issue is fundamental and isn't easy to solve by simply shutting down GTRE, HAL or other state-owned firms and giving the job to the Tatas, Ambanis or Mahindras to design and build jet engines.

Another plan is to jump the gun and go for the latest tech, when even the base was not there, it was set for failure,. if you design and engine based on best parameter it is going to prone for failure. It is time to work on what you can achieve, go for capabillity, then super duper design,. go with multiple milestone and success and use the tech, every other country has gone through the phase. what if the engine is few 100Kg more weight, make sure it has little more power and the capability can be achieved with more relax parameters. If the power is there, you can fly a fighter with the same capability, what is this fetish with small, compact and best of freed everything. Use what has been achieved, now you know the capability, design on the same principle bigger engine with better power, design the fighter with modular engine pay to adopt to bigger and smaller engine.

@@abymathew295 I disagree. Tejas MK1A looks better than a Typhoon in flight and more so on the ground. The Typoon appears unbalanced on the ground with the nose pointing up into the air. Rafale is a 90 million dollar aircraft so for the price, it better be looking better than the Tejas MK1A or MK2 for that matter. The Grippen has good aesthetics both inside and out, but the MK2 will close that gap. Overall, the Tejas looks great. It looks like a cross between a Mirage and an F-16 in a matte grey color. More importantly, it can be manufactured in large numbers cost effectively, can fire all kinds of weapons (Indian, Russian, Western), has AESA radar, full FBW and a proven lightweight, fuel efficient engine. It also has never crashed and has a perfect flight record. It is being integrated into a networked AEW & C that is being built. These days is as important as the aircraft itself. The British and Germans made working jet engines in the 1940s. That’s was 80 years ago! India can’t make a jet engine?😂😂

Increase reservations on HAL 🤣🤣 so that you can develop engine by own on 2090..these gov backed companies are not developed much because of reservation. So the talented people will flew to US and you buy from US 😂😂 china developed engine by own can't you develop by own .very shameful 🤭🙏

It is not about designing but it is about having fixed capital investments for advanced manufacturing. India cannot conjure $15 billion for MMRCA for nearly 20 years. American companies are going to invest that money and start the manufacturing.

As long you have reservations in jobs and admit low quality people in defence projects , it would only lead to waste of money . Look at the team involved in the project , mostly reservation candidates , how will they develop an engine. Students from IIT should be funded for research which will develop an engine in 3-5 years. Instead stupid knowledge less people are involved who are lazy and eating tax money.
Where does Indian air power stand vis-a-vis China and Pakistan?
