Hi All,
I had to install a couple of hard-drives on my Dell XPS 8930. In true viking format, I didn't want to read the manual, and thought it might be handy to post a video showing the process for others.
It was pretty painless, just be aware the cables are very easy to crimp on the motherboard because of the drive placements. And the power cable isn't quite long enough to reach some hard drives in both bottom slots.
Also, I ramble and there is clicking from a failing fan on another computer. Now that you know that I bet it is all you'll be able to hear! BWAHA

@@LloydSummers Hi, one of the 2 hard drives that I installed failed. The diagnostic code says that it is Hard Drive 3. Which slot is Hard Drive 3 located in? It is very weird, because I had installed 2 new WD hard drives. The entire machine is down due to the one drive having failed. I would like to get this XPS 8930 back up again. @@rachelq0077 good question, one way to know is to start the computer in BIOS mode... That should tell you a little bit about which hard drive is failing. The other option is to disconnect them one at a time and restart and see if it shows the same error message...

Hi Lloyd. MANY THANKS! I've been back and forth with Dell Tech support for two weeks now. It's been a while since I've installed a hard drive and I only needed to know where (or how) to find and connect the "Data-cable" to the drive. Dells only solution: pay $99 for a support call, or send the computer in (5-10 day process).for them to install. Your video not only solved the "Data-cable" mystery (use a Sata Cable) but answered questions I had not thought of yet. Well Done. It should have been my 1st choice to check KZfaq and next time I will.

I absolutely LOVE Dell and have become their BIGGEST advocate telling everyone I know family & friends if they're in the market for a computer to buy DELL!!!... man, their customer service is MUCH better than HP's. I used to only buy HP's but when it was time to upgrade my desktop, I decided to give the XPS 8930 a try because it offered 3 internal drive bays and the competing HP desktop at the time only offered 2. I originally purchased the "bare bones" system... *8GBs memory *128MB M.2 NVMEe ssd *1TB hard drive *No video card I only wanted the bare bones system because I was planning on gradually upgrading it myself. A few months after I purchased it, it stopped booting so I contacted Dell and made arrangements to send it back for warranty repairs... turns out the ssd was mis-seated so it really wasn't a serious problem. Anyway, a few days after they received it, I got a call from one of their technicians asking if I wanted to "buy" a new top cover for my computer because they said mine was broken. I told them, "That's impossible", that it was a new system and when I packed it for shipping there wasn't a scratch anywhere on it and had the pictures I took at FedEx where I packed it for shipping to prove it. The following day, I received a call from someone at Dell informing me that since the computer was still so new they didn't have a new top cover available and wanted to know if I'd be willing to accept an "exchange" (refurbished) unit. I was REAL hesitant at first but ultimately agreed to the exchange after I was assured it would be in just "as good" condition and might even be better than my original system. Later that afternoon, I received an email informing me of the specifications from the "exchange" unit they were sending me... *64 GBs memory *256MB M.2 NVMe sse *2TB hard drive *NVIDIA Geforce GTS 1060 video card When Dell "exchanges" they seriously UPGRADE you too! After I received the exchange unit, I immediately upgraded the 256GB NVMe M.2 ssd to a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SATA ssd and replaced the original 2TB 3.5" hard drive with three 4TB 2.5" hard drives to store all my multimedia on. Even though the 'Setup & Specifications' sheet states the system can only use up to 4TB hard drives I read a post by someone on one of the XPS 8930 forums that it can actually use larger hard drives so I'm planning on trying out a 10TB drive and if it works, will probably replace the 4TB hard drives with a pair of 10TB drives. I"m also planning on upgrading the 1TB SATA ssd with a 2TB NVMe ssd pretty soon. I absolutely LOVE my XPS 8930 and couldn't be happier with it and Dell's customer service. I originally started out with a "bare bones" system and ended up with a top-of-the-line system worth 3-4x more than I originally paid. By-the-way... You should have removed the video card which would have allowed you much easier access to connect and route the SATA 3 cables when installing your drives. That's what I did and it made things so much easier for a clean cable routing... those raised "L" tabs in the middle of the top of the drive cages are cable "holds" so you can route the cables cleanly and securely. Just tuck your cables under those tabs and they'll securely hold and keep them in place.

@LloydSummers
@LloydSummers 4 жыл бұрын
You aren’t supposed to (because it’s supposed to help regulate the airflow). In practice though, it’s perfectly fine, as long as dust and hair doesn’t clog up the fans and heatsinks :). We have another VR desktop that I ran like this for about 4 years, and just dusted it periodically. If dust DOES take up too much space on the heat sink, you’ll know because the cpu will start throttling to keep the temp down.

just added a 4tb WD black to my 8920, same interior case architecture. When I tried to boot, I got nothing but a black screen, couldn't access anything. Anybody know what could cause this?
@LloydSummers
@LloydSummers 4 жыл бұрын
Ruling out things like a monitor not working or set up in the wrong HDMI port... If it’s a blackscreen - no bios, it can mean a few things. Usually that means it didn’t even try to access the hard drives, so the motherboard may have an issue (we had one die on our 8930 actually). The motherboard is actually an Asus rebranded as dell, and they have some iffy quality controls. This is noticeable as the fans and lights usually won’t come on all the way. Outside of that, the next is ram - if it fails to access the ram at all the bios won’t come up. If the motherboard, bios chip, bios battery, power and ram are fine - it *should* at least show you the bios screen. From there you can troubleshoot the hard drives at least.

Hi. I'm looking for a music recording PC. I don't need any gaming graphics etc. Is this a good system? I don't want the synth VSTs slowing down or lag on my guitar. Does an SSD help with this or is that the concern of the Processor and RAM? Thanks.
@LloydSummers
@LloydSummers 3 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I used to do a lot of audio :D. You want a computer with an i9 in the processor name, that will let you run the most VSTs without slowing down. I’d buy an external audio card for music, that will get you better more accurate recordings (as they do some processing on the card, so your recordings are tighter with less latency, and so it doesn’t sound like you are off the beat). SSD can make this faster especially when working with samples or VSTis. And RAM is very important, because if your song gets too big, it will stop storing your audio in RAM and write it to the hard disk which is slower. So, an SSD, and an i9, with 32GB of ram, and an external creative labs audio card, will get you an absolutely amazing DAW station that will be the top of the market -- in my humble opinion of course. I’d also love to hear your music!

I've just finished installing my second secondary hard drive in my new XPS 8930, and I've had similar problems with both. The first second drive was a WD Ultrastar. Everything connected and initialized properly, but the drive would not stop spinning...LOUDLY...even when the drive was not being accessed. It was intolerable, so I removed and returned it to B&H. I just installed a Seagate Exos, and this drive also seems to spin continuously and slightly less noisily...even though it's not being accessed. Is this normal behavior with second drives? Is there some Dell setting I need to employ so that the drive only spins when accessed? Do I have a bad data cord or power cord? Am I doing something wrong?

I finally contacted Dell. After about 30 minutes of their troubleshooting and investigating, they eventually told me that the Dell XPS 8930 cannot support an internal HDD larger than 4 TB. So, now I've installed a 4TB internal HDD, and it is operating normally. It seems crazy to me that a $2500 computer can't operate properly with a larger additional HD, which I wanted to use for photo storage. Dell needs to publicize this limitation clearly in their product descriptions. I've done some searching on the Dell forums, and apparently the limitation has been present on various XPS versions over the past few years. Lots of people have had trouble with larger drives, and they've all reported being told by Dell about the 4TB limit on a single drive...and possibly an 8TB over-all limit on the drives attached to the motherboard. Some people think the limitation is due to the BIOS that Dell uses (it's not a Windows limit, obviously).
@LloydSummers
@LloydSummers 4 жыл бұрын
That's interesting! I think I'm probably around 7TB, good to know. The motherbard is slightly limiting, and something I'd probably need to upgrade down the line too. I'd have to check the model number on the board, but because it only allows 1 video card I'm pretty sure they saved money there. I have to refresh myself on part numbers but iirc the boards with a Z will support more drives, more USB 3 slots, better PCI etc. And there are like 3 stages of lower spec motherboards ... Definitely something to investigate

Could you provide a link to the black tray that you have to mount the drive in the metal sleeve?

Sure! I also found some SSD mounting slots on it later. But let me grab a link - I don’t know why but I have a bunch of these old trays kicking around

I believe I have the Corsair version, but there is a cheaper rosewill one here www.newegg.ca/rosewill-rdrd-11004-2-x-2-5-drive-to-3-5-bay/p/N82E16817997037 any converter should do though. The SSDs don’t have any moving parts, so as long as they have a solid connection, they won’t get damaged by vibrations or bumps the way a spinning drive would

@@LloydSummers Looks like that won't work for the drive I want to get. The one at the link is for a 2.5" drive, and I am looking to get a 3.5" 2T FireCuda hybrid drive. I think I am going to just order the drive and see if it can screw in without the mounting kit first. Then go from there. I am confused about the bay dimensions. A lot of the mounting kits are for a 3.5" bay but the width of the two bays at the bottom of the XPS 8930 are 4.25" wide.

@@jasonsignor7237 hmm I'll double check mine, but my 3.5" full sized drives, just screwed directly into the bare metal, no adapter needed
