Ketanggungan Barat was the site of a long abandoned former sugar mill but the estate around it was still cultivated and there was a locoshed here for the steam locomotives that worked the cane trains. Every day as cane trains arrived the loris were forwarded on the somewhat inaccessible connecting line to Tersana Baru, changing power at Luwung Gajah some way short of their final destination.
The empty loris would then return, usually in the morning, these trains being naturally longer - the excess locomotives could then go ahead 'light engine'.
This video shows mainly Maffei 0-8-0T 6 and 7 although the first locomotive over the big bridge is actually Ducroo and Brauns 0-4-4-0T Mallet 5

Thank you for posting this video. My grandfather (born 1893 in Japara and died in Cirebon in a Japanese internment camp 1945) worked as a first engineer at the sugar-factory Ketanggoengan West. I'm on a search to try and find out more about my own roots and found this video 🙏

Hello, my name is Ina and I am from Jakarta, Indonesia. Little did I know, my great-great grandfather was named Soeradidjaya and was working at Ketanggoengan West circa early 1900s. That's the only information that my mother give to me (Oh! and he has several mistresses as well! 😂) I'm curious about what my great-great grandfather might look like and what kind of life that he lives in. Correct, but some of this video including the thumbnail picture is just inside West Java!

100% genuine and original, this was probably the largest Mallet in any sugar mill, 80HP (officially!) and superheated.

minute 3:24 is that the bridge to West Java, sir?

No, that bridge was very close to Luwung Gajah on the road seen in the video. The other bridge was a few kilometres further along, I think that was the bridge that caused the line to be abandoned because too much sand had been taken from the river bed.

@@internationalsteamVery magnificent bridge that is. Must've cost the mill a lot of money to build it back then. Reminds me of the bridges along Sumberharjo's field line. Also, were there 2 trains, one behind the other?
