funny you say that. Just a few days ago my dog, who will go after absolutely everything except for birds, was nosing around the backyard. A bird flew in and landed about ten feet from her. They looked at eachother, she sniffed at him, then they both looked directly at me for like two seconds before going back to hunting around in the grass. It was both creepy and wonderful. Sort of like she was telling the bird that I have the nature version of the ghetto pass.

Too be fair, humans aren't necessarily the smartest life forms on earth. We are excellent toolmakers and our defining traits of empathy, imagination, and toolmaking does give us a massive edge but, for example, fungus might be very well far more intelligent then we humans could ever hope to be.

Maybe it's just my love for Macbeth, but I would love to see a version set in WWII or an opera production with a more horror-based take. I honestly wish Argento hadn't had such issues trying to make it. Sounds amazing.

I had a similar feeling when I found out Kubrick wanted to make an adaptation of Perfume but gave up after saying, essentially, that it would be virtually impossible to faithfully recreate it in film format. Still, would have loved to have seen his interpretation of it as it seems right up his alley. Seems like some pieces of art aren't meant to be!

I was actually hoping if you did an Argento film, it'd be Phenomenon, one of his weirder movies (and the inspiration for the game Clock Tower). I mean, it has a girl with the psychic ability to control bugs and a chimp, and it's played dead serious (and actually kind of works). Never seen this one, though, so will check it out.

The ending actually gave it a lot of depth - it makes sense that the main character was 'into' it, works on a meta-level as this can also be said of you, who has been watching the film incl. all the grisly murders. But despite having this propensity for evil within her (as we all do) she endeavours to nurture her better nature (helping the lizard). It's a message that's rare in a horror movie, about the necessity to confront and live with evil rather simply celebrating the spectacle of evil as typical horror films do. People just aren't inclined to see any depth in an Argento movie

not only do i adore this movie, i adore all of dario argentos movies. if i remember correctly opera was his last good movie. one of my favorites of his is "Phenomena" known in the US as "the creepers". i never saw the movie for the longest time because i thought "the box art says its a girl using bugs to kill people, that sounds stupid" but holy shit was i wrong. phenomena is like in my top 5 fav horror movies of all time. any gamers out there watch it and tell me if it reminds of you of a certain SNES horror game and remember that Phenomena was made in 84, way before the SNES. i think my fav thing about argentos movies is that they're so gorgeous, every single one of em. opera's got actual opera singing and its beautiful even though you're watching a murder while listening to it. suspiria is so gorgeous with its use of colors. phenomena's gorgeous with its locations and music. this man is one of the best movie makers ever, one of my all time favorites for sure. i think my fav character in opera is bettys blonde manager. i just love his character so much, he goes all out for betty when he doesn't have to. i know this vid is about opera but im telling you phenomena is amazeballs. the music is sooo good and the ending is fucking amazing, i cheer every fucking time. jennifer connelly is in it and donald pleasence. just watch it and the rest of argentos movies. side note; i love all the houses in these italian movies, they're so unique and different and i want to just live in all of em. edit: i also recommend stage fright, its become one of my new favs. another beautiful horror film with some fun deaths and music.

Great review, and one of my favorite Argento films to show the uninitiated. I hear there is a German alternate ending. After Betty has bashed Santini over the head, the police have arrived and everything is chaotic. Betty keeps yelling that she is nothing like her mother and the movie abruptly ends there and the Opera theme kicks in. That seems to be a better way to end Opera, on a shrill note.

This reminds me of Inside no. 9, a British horror series that did a similar piece called the understudy. Where they perfectly reflected the narration of Macbeth from the perspective of an understudy, a little meta considering their role was for Macbeth and even then there was an exhilarating amount of tension and a twist within one episode. The 24 minute episode did a great job of modernizing the story of Macbeth without too many theatrics. Unless it's a multi wearhouse 5 story interactive experience like Sleep no More on the other side, I feel like Opera would feel like a waste of time, being way too dragged out without bringing anything new to the table. Then again as a big fan of Hausu, there's lots of appeal to the little things full of flaws and heart.

Glad to see Opera get some love! I think it's ambiguous though if she's lying to the killer entirely. His scheme was to awaken the sadistic side of her she inherited from her mother. She sees the cops and knows he's going to get caught so she can't be with him even if she wants to be. The movie ends with her releasing a trapped lizard instead of torturing it to show her that she's not a sadist but I think her monologue reflects that there's complexity to that

I see this as the movie having two endings that one can choose from. You can stop after the the initial end, with Santini being defeated and killed at the theater and leave it at that, with Betty heroically escaping, killing the villain and going on to live a long happy life with her love interest, Marco and everything being fine... or go for the edgier, grimmer ending where the baddie somehow survived, kills the boyfriend before getting himself defeated and the gal getting all weird and going on about flowers. - Call me old fashioned and a believer in love conquering all but I prefer the former because it makes sense, wraps things up and ends happily and no weird monologue about "I'm not like the other girls, I like flowers, etc". - Many laugh at American culture for it's fixation on "happy endings" and "optimism" and see it as trite and childish... but I prefer to see it as intelligent. To make the world and human nature better, you need to have that hope and morale. - Nothing wrong with sad endings, per-se, mind you, but ones that seem tacked-on is stupid. What was the point of the Alps sequence? It was unneeded. It just served as a "Cruel Twist Ending" to a movie that seemed to have already wrapped up. But no, it wasn't enough to have Betty finally become more than a mere victim and kill Santini, Argento just HAD to have Santini escape, kill Marco, then have others arrest him... thus, she's still a victim AND her true love was still taken from her by the villain who wanted her for himself. - I guess Argento wanted to make the movie like a tragic Opera and felt a happy ending with Betty and Marco together didn't fit the theme. I guess Santini is like Scarpia or something. - But I guess, with the way the movie is made, Argento did give the viewers a choice. If you prefer "Comedia" then the movie ends without the Alps sequence. If you prefer "Tragedy", include the Alps sequence. - And so, for me... I ignore the Alps sequence. After being a helpless victim the whole film, Betty finally becomes her own rescuer and the hero, she succeeds in killings the villain, who wanted her all for himself, to be with the man she loved and chose, Marco. It becomes a strong feminist film and the bad guy loses. That's the ending this world needs! In a world full of triumphant evil, we need more tales of evil thwarted and punished... ... THEREFORE; BETTY SUCCESFULLY KILLED SANTINI, GOT TOGETHER WITH MARCO, AND SHE AND MARCO LIVED A LONG, HAPPY LIFE TOGETHER UNTIL THEY BOTH PASSED AWAY OF OLD AGE.
@helvete_ingres4717
@helvete_ingres4717 Жыл бұрын
you didn't get the film at all, you 'ignore' the part where all the depth comes from that makes this movie more than a series of bloody set-pieces. The ending is important b/c all of the depth comes from there when it turns the tables and Betty admits she was 'into' the murders as the killer accuses (yes she says this to manipulate the killer but lies work when there's truth in them), far from being a naive and innocent victim she was complicit as her mother was. Think about it, how obvious it was who the killer was, watch it again and see how Betty makes it easy for him to find her at every single opportunity. This adds depth to the film on a meta-level (aswell as to her character) b/c it equally applies to the audience watching the film and 'enjoying' the spectacle of bloody murder as one does with the typical slasher movie, inviting reflection on one's relationship with such media. Betty is the 'bad guy' on some level and so are you, the viewer - all are complicit in the evil that took place. But despite having this propensity for evil within her (as we all do) she chooses to nurture her better nature (shown by helping the lizard). It's a message that's rare in a horror movie, about the necessity to confront and live with evil rather than simply celebrating the spectacle of evil as typical horror films do - it IS optimistic, but in a thoughtful and intelligent and truthful way, not the way you want which is mindless and 'trite' as you all but admit Also..the character Marco was a stand-in for Argento himself (did yu miss the part where they talk about him being a director of horror movies..?), how douchey would it be to make his stand-in the hero who foils the bad guy and gets the young girl in the end? Seems like you missed almost everything

I fucking loved that movie on VHS through the 90s, but I was pretty much banned from my turn on "who gets to put on the next movie" when I put a DVD of it on. I've heard the bluray has a better mix, but man, some of the DVD releases are really fucking grating. You know your typical music TOO LOUD, dialogue too quiet mixes? Yea, that. Like, the Goblin soundtrack is amazing... but not when you can only hear that damn BWOOOM drum sound.

I still haven't seen inferno, but I fucking love suspiria! The cinematography, color pallette, and goblin's music all just come together perfectly in that movie. Got to study giallo films in a horror film making class back in college, and that study culminated in a screening of suspiria.

Suspiria’s definitely a favorite of mine, but Opera’s his most focused work for sure. Blood Red and Tenebre were more than fair offerings but I think the Three Mothers trilogy and Opera are his strongest movies overall. Card Game was fair enough but you could tell budget constraints may have been a hurdle for it. With that said, the remake of Suspiria went beyond expectation for me. While we get more of the gray and bleak of mid-70’s Germany, it expanded and rearranged the elements that made up the original.

Problem with the "device" for the eye.. You can still blink with it and not have problems. Just requires some movement of other parts of the face. Hands not required.

This is my favorite lesser known argento films. Rented it in highschool through Netflix back in like 2010. Loved it so much I never returned it. lol. Still have a copy of Inferno and Fists in the Pocket I got the same way... Can you even still get dvds through Netflix anymore?

Argento really had such a long line of excellent and interesting movies, right up until he quit in the mid 90s. Opera is in such need of appreciation.

I have crow friends. It started by me giving them treats and now they come visit with me every day. One will come to my window and wait and watch while I scramble her an egg for a treat. Today i found her down the street nibbling on some meat she got from someone's trash. I stopped and talked to her while she finished, then she followed me home. People sitting by the park were laughing as she walked along side me down the street.

Fun fact: Argento also made a weird (even for his standards) film called Phenomena (aka Creepers). It features a very young Jennifer Connelly as a girl with the ability to talk to insects. Yes, this is real.
