Lucio Fulci's The Beyond is one of my absolute favorite horror movies, but I hated it when I first saw it as 7 Doors of Death. Here's a look at the complicated history of this movie, my personal journey with it and of course, all of the mayhem contained within.

I don't think Fulci is brought up enough when it comes to zombie and splatter films. Personally I like to think he's Italy's answer to Romero and Herschell Gordon Lewis. Even with the budgetary constraints, Fulci's gore and zombie makeup just has a certain oomph to it. I could hardly get through stuff like the bottle scene in The New York Ripper(and if you know the scene, sorry for triggering flashbacks), and he really knows to put emphasis on the undead aspect when designing zombies. I wish Zombi wasn't a victim of shitty marketing, it feels like people who never watched it tend to pass it off as a Romero ripoff due to the title when the film makes it pretty clear that it's actually separate from Romero's work(mainly that Fulci's zombies were clearly supernatural, whereas the cause of Romero zombies was either attributed to a virus or left up in the air). Even with his worst films, you could see that Fulci had ambition.

Lucio Fulci is one of my favorite directors. House by the cemetery was one of my favorite Italian horror films but The Beyond is so much better, very surreal. The Blu Ray also came with the soundtrack which is amazing.

Wowww... I remember this movie! In the town I live in, we had a shady/a little bit creepy video store that had one of those huge porn collections in the back and was in the same building as a biker bar. They hardly ever had new movies but they had an amazing selection of old horror movies, which I was very much into at 12 years old. I remember watching it, not really understanding it, but it freaked me out because my parents had just bought a house that we were stripping and remodeling while living in it. My dad was painting the outside of the house and I was so afraid he was going to fall off the ladders after seeing the painter fall in the movie. The outside of the hotel looks similar to my house. I was too afraid to go in the basement just incase acid bath monster was down there. My parents are both gone now and the house is mine. It had, and still has, a huge dirt mound on one end and I have no idea what’s under it. Could be dirt, could be acid bath monster, still not real sure. The remember the spiders freaking my mom out, because she always watched the horror movies too. They’re the same spiders in Something Wicked This Way Comes

I love this film, I'm a italian horror veteran since Blockbuster ended. This and Torso are Classics and Super Influential, And Fulci should have more recognition in vintage gore, blood splatters in screen in beautiful arthouse style, Feeling like this is the first Arthouse movie, nonsensical gore is awesome

I first saw this as 7 Doors To Death too. Not only was it an awful cut, but it was beyond grainy on VHS. The full version of the movie is a classic.

was actually clark ashton smith, but given that he was part of lovecraft's weird tale literature club, you'd probably enjoy his work also - they basically borrowed each other's OCs for collaborative works on a regular basis. the writer of conan the barbarian, robert e. howard, was also part of this group! lotta' tropes go back to those guys being pen pals.

My favorite Italian horror film. I watch it every year for 31 Days of Horror. I too discovered it via the Necrophagia DVD, bought Seven Doors of Death, hated it...bought The Beyond five years later, fell in love, haha. Very similar voyage, my friend.

Every component in late 70’s/early 80’s (especially Italian) Horror slapped. The Beyond was one of the first I saw after Suspiria, too. Have you checked out “Shock” by Mario Bava? They recently sorta bit it with last year’s “The Prodigy”.

I remember when Internet was new, and we would share the most brutal and gory and fun horror movie clips we could find. The spider and eye scenes from this and Zombi 2 were the favorites, but also the brain splatter scene from that Peter Jackson film that I now can't remember the name of. It took years before we actually got our hands on the movies themselves, and man was it worth the wait. Good times.

I found out about The Beyond and Fulci on late 90s internet from Blackest Heart Media who sold VHS bootlegs of Fulci laserdisc rips and lots of obscure movies. There was almost zero Fulci fan presence on the internet at the time, The Evil Dead wasn't even in print then since the 80s VHS.
