The fatigue thing was probably the most surprising thing to me, I remember the very first time I rode about 100 miles away on the highway. I got to my destination, was absolutely wasted and had no idea why!

My first longer ride after 30 years not being on a bike was 120 round trip. I put over 10k on my old bike in the summer of 83, so I figured no problem. I was trashed for 2 days after.

Making eye contact with cars entering traffic, slow down if they dont look right at you. Dont go faster than you can safely stop. At red lights ,dont pull right up to the stopped traffic, leave yourself room tomove to the side while you check your six .

I remember riding on my scooter in the high wind one day when I was a new rider and I thought I was about to fly off the road. Squiggly little tires they were! And yes, fatigue! You’re absolutely right. Even still, I have to remind myself to stop tensing up on the bike.

Try crossing railroad tracks at 90 degrees when possible. You may need to get into the left or right side of the lane just before the tracks and then turn into them. A bit of water or oil on the tracks can make them slippery. If you don't see the tracks in time, down shifting and adding power just before the track will take some weight off of the front tire. Metal can be slippery. I have a broken collar bone from a smooth wet manhole cover. At a toll booth stay away from the center part of the lane. Millions of cars have stopped and leaked oil there. On a long trip without a windshield, tying a sleeping bag to the handle bars will help break the wind.

Never had any issues crossing railroad tracks. Interesting method! A rolled up blanket on the handlebars makes the ride much smoother for sure.

Anxiety: I get so nervous when I find myself on a road being Re-Paved. You know when they are in the middle of the paved road project when one lane is like 2 inches above another lane. For me, that gives me nightmares...

There's a set of railroad tracks that I have to go over, they're at a 45 degree. I've been riding for ten years and I still feel iffy about going over it.

I’ve been caught off guard once on a trip from Southern California. I had to cross over into the lane that was newly paved, meaning hitting that edge around 75 mph. Scary for sure!! You never know sometimes...

I didn't even think of these moments 'cause our city doesn't fix the roads that often. Not the point of tearing up the old to put down new. I mean, our roads here are 30% pot holes, 30% tar snakes, 30% whatever-came-off-everyone-else's-car, 5% road kill, and 5% clean asphalt. :P

@@cafenightster4548 When my dad used to ride, rail crossings were his worst nightmare. Those ruts collect all kinds of crap that'll easily put a hole in your tires. ....Then he hit pea stones while cornering, and slid shoulder first into a curb, snapping his collar bone. Rail crossings were still his worst moments riding.

Lol, oh man the voice at the end is so me and my kids. You have most definitely put a smile on this guy’s face. Thank you 😊 I’ve only been riding two years now, but everything you talked about is everything that caught me off Guard. My two worst still are anxiety and parking my bike on inclines🤫 I’m a Iraq war veteran and father of two wonderful kids. 3 years ago I became a widower and well let’s just say my heavenly gifted bike has saved my life. I guess that’s another thing that I didn’t expect from riding. People say you will love it, but they really don’t say how powerful it is on your soul. Anyway totally love your style and what you got going on 🤙💜

I'm battling all 3 of these. As a new rider mental fatigue along with physical fatigue gets me. Wind I know with time I'll get use to, earplugs helped. With anxiety some days are better then others. For me keeping a positive, can-do attitude helps me with these issues, and knowing when I'm reaching my limit. Safe journey!

1. Wind, especially crosswind in the mountains, or on the open highway! Even on a full-dress Goldwing, I have had a crosswind push me so hard I had to countersteer toward the wind to stay on a straight path! Watch for this type of side blast when passing semis or any other vehicles larger than a small car, as well. A tailwind is always sweet, lol!

I tend to raise myslef off the seat to lessen the ass kicking railroad tracks or bumps give. Also a good idea to emphasize the importance of good grip riding boots. I found out when i first started riding every intersection is full of oil, trash, and gravel. Great video, ride safe chica!
@KillswitchQueen
@KillswitchQueen 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Boots are super important and the sole grip varies so much from boot to boot. I use 2 different boots for each of my bikes. I find I need more grip on the Triumph that has metal foot pegs, not rubber. Flat treaded riding boots (sneaker style) always slip in gravel. Trading looks for function, never a good thing!

Absolutely right about wind! My first time riding over 55 mph, more than 15 miles and on anything bigger than my Virago 535 was when I rented a 1200 Sporty in Palm Springs and rode to BRO Joshua Tree, wearing a crappy borrowed half helmet that parachuted my head all the way! I ride solo and learn stuff as I go but 5 years later I go anywhere I want and yes-I have much better gear now. Thanks for your channel.

Haha nice vid. I sub'd. I'm a fellow Californian. You made absolutely great points in this video. It's good to hear what chics are thinking or experiencing. I also try really to hard to help out new riders with their experiences. These are some things I will keep in mind. The wind is a huge factor. I helped a friend get home because she freaked out on Pacheco pass. Unfortunately she didn't make it all the way home on the bike. We had to stop on the 152 freeway because she was panicking and I had to call friends to come help us get home. I did warn her about the wind, and she was on a Ninja 300 and had not ridden that far before (Fresno to Monterey), but dang she was really freaked out. I felt bad for her. Anyways, keep up the nice vids! I love the New York like accent you kinda have. I have some vids on KZfaq as well but I am not trying to be a Moto Blogger. Best of luck to you girly!

Oh yes, I can so relate to this. I've been learner riding since Sept 2020. Yep, I'm not a fan of the wind but it's getting better. I found I was quite tired after riding just a few miles, but yes, it is getting better. I've dumped my front end into a big pothole, ouch it was not nice. I keep sliding out the back end, the scariest one was almost being dumped from a rear end slide going around a roundabout. One thing you didn't mention is to keep your mouth ajar. If you hit a bump you snap your teeth together and it hurts. Loved your video !! Greetings from Downunder.

I used to drive for a parts store; we used little Saturn sedans. You know the 90's ones that are like 80% plastic? I remember driving and getting hit with a gust of wind hard enough to blow me into another lane. I was white knuckled the way back to the shop, thanking any and every god that has ever existed I wasn't on a bike. Those meter high dividers are not motorcycle friendly.

1)you might get a wrong first motorcycle,make it a cheaper one rather than brand new expensive one because you will outgrow it or simply not like the riding position/discomfort that comes with it(some sport bikes you just not gonna want to make a long roadtrip on) 2)the wind is true,hot summer days with thin air are the best to fly on interstates,unlike changing season wind gusts that will make you shit yourself or making a ride more unpleasant.-start learning on regular roads and avoid interstates until you learn to ride and get used to high speeds. 3) it was a strange relationship where i didnt really enjoy riding my first bike,now after switching i definedly see cons and pros of different power but i didnt really enjoy riding until i got something more powerfull 4) if you not gonna ride in shorts and flip flops or bikini then you might want to get 2 jackets and 2 pairs of gloves for riding at temperatures like 40 degrees when its cold as a mofo,lighter perforated jacket for summer(even if the jacket is perforated,some of them barely let the air through and you will be boiling yourself alive thinking it does the job in summer heat,you have to feel the air almost get onto your chest and immediately cool you off while getting some speed,heated jackets is a thing but solid leather one will do the job as well,same for gloves,i still hunt for gloves since a perfect fit is a must so on my bike,first thing that frrezes is my fingers,then maybe my neck so i found womens winter gloves that were the best fit for me and i got them cause they are lifesavers.also get a thick round scarf thing that will protect your neck for winter-its a must.If you gonna hit the interstate in cold winter days for hours non stop then electric heated clothes is probably a must. 5)The double anti fogg pinlock can obstruct your vision in a helmet,you can get away without it riding all year,i crack the shield open on redlights from fogging up and in winter if you fogging up,just crack open the visor by tiny 1 click and ride with it cracked open,it might get colder but you will see where you going,try riding through thick fog with visor closed heheh. 6) if your bike got a storage the size of your phone then get used to carrying a backpack at all times,its uncomfortable or just weird the first 1,2 times but then its perfect for carrying everything behind your back and some emergency extras,keep it as light as possible,and when you fill it up with stuff after a long day,remember your center of gravity will be high from all that shit in the backpack so take cornering with care 7)most wrong people get that didnt start riding yet is that car drivers will get you in trouble,wrong-most car drivers behave careful around you and give you extra space,sometimes tou get that retard that rides your ass so just let them pass,dont try to kick other cars or people because you will just fall off the bike,if you have to,practice wheelies away from everyone cause its very easy to flip a bike and hurt yourself and destroy the motorcycle,avoid riding near or with other motorcyclists for at least first year of riding,its much more dangerous and distracting than cars. oh and you will drop/lay down your motorcycle while learning or even getting a new one later,its just the way it works and if it happens,pick it up,make sure your shifter/rear brake still in place,tie them up if they broke off,turn the bike off and on,cause some bikes or most of them now idk wont start due to them being layed down so off/on. When you get a duyingndead battery and your ass is stuck somewhere,you can pushstart it,find a hill or you can even get someone to push the bike,turn the key to on/put it in first or second gear and rrlease the clutch once you get to the fastest speed you can get to,should work,and dont put the footpeg down in first gear cause bike will just turn off so N first and footpeg down if you gotta keep it running

I know this is an older video… My son talked me into taking a motorcycle course with him. He asked the instructor if he ever failed anyone and he said only 1 person. I’m hearing impaired and I didn’t realize my hearing aids were going to squeal under the helmet and it hailed and snowed…my son pass and I failed…had never been on a bike and he didn’t sign me up for the beginner course. 5 years later and I tell my husband I want a Honda Monkey, so we get matching Monkeys. I’ve ridden twice, once on the basketball court and around the back yard. Second time was down the dead-end of our street…still afraid to go in second gear. My husband had to get a lowering kit because I was on my tippy toes. Lowered it 2” and I’m still slightly on my tippy toes. I’m 4’10” 85 lbs. very small framed so I struggle finding riding gear. I’m determined though, I want to ride with my husband and 2 sons. Still trying to get used to the gear & clutch. About 4 months ago broke my shoulder and a month ago my 6 month 53 pound golden doodle jumped up on me from the side and broke my ribs. Never broke a bone in my body till this year. Despite my broken ribs going to ride down the end of our road just for a little practice. Glad to take any advice that I can get.

AWESOME vid and spot on! I am not new to riding by no means. But I went 105 MPH on a naked bike for the first time Saturday. (On a closed course racetrack, ya know) And, like, WOW! HUGE difference from 70 on the Interstate and 105! I only did it for about 30 seconds. Then my chicken shit filter kicked in and I said NOPE, not for me! hahahahaha! Wind. My first bike when I got a cross-wind, it nearly blew the bike out from under me. Sometimes ended up riding in a straight line but the bike banked like cornering, to compensate for wind.

1. The wind. Oh yes. First "long ride" I did on country roads, that sudden blast of a cross wind. Or when on the narrow country road with speed limit at 50mph and an over size load semi comes opposite. It felt like a damn baseball bat hit me in the chest. Leading to number..... 2. Fatigue. That first "long ride" I was exhausted. I was smart enough to start taking more and more breaks. I sleep so well after long motorcycle rides. Much longer now than the forty mile or so first "long ride." I ride a few hundred miles, and I sleep so well. 3. Anxiety. Absolutely! An unfamiliar moment after a long straight stretch of road and then a turn, the tendency to try to turn rather than counter steer and lean. Or when the road is wet to want to go back to car mode and steer rather than trust traction and lean like you should. Or riding interstate. I road many country highways just fine. One lane going each direction at highway speeds, no problem. Then I'd go onto the I-5 and be freaked out to just go the length of one exit. Finally, I bit the bullet and did it, and after not much time, I was so comfortable.

Strangely I’ve always enjoyed the thrill of riding past a semi truck, or even next to one on the highway. I know how dangerous they are, maybe that’s why I get a rush! I used to like standing next to train tracks while freight trains barreled past you, only feet away. There is nothing like that feeling, sound, intensity! I was a dumb kid lol. But agreed, you eventually get comfortable and once you’ve done something once, it’s not as bad the next time!

I swear I'm not a know it all, I just wanted to say next time you have to move your bike like you did on the side of the road I'd recommend keeping the jiffy stand down, standing on the other side of it, lean it up against you and walking that way. If you start to slip or something you can put it back down on the jiffy stand then real quick.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's suddenly OOH OLD INDUSTRIAL JUNK! WANNA SEE IT! AM I TRESPASSING? CAN I KEEP IT? Sometimes I still get anxious doing low-speed tight turns on my either of my bikes, the big one especially. The thing I noticed most right away when I started riding was how much I could smell of the world. Cooking, garbage, forests, factories, roadkill, everything. It's glorious. I feel a much deeper understanding of dogs with their head out the window. Riding quiets the noise in my head. I wish it didn't take til I was 35 to start but whatever. Cheers!

Hey sometimes there is actually really good stuff on the side of the road, or in a dumpster, you don’t know until you check right?? 🤣 I’ve been practicing slow speed maneuvers because I also get nervous... riding is the only thing keeping me sane while I wait for my knee to completely heal. It’s rough out in the real world! I’ll take riding my motorcycle any day, thanks!

I wouldn't kick you out because then you'd take alllll your bikes with you! I only get nervous flying small aircraft, it gets worse each time I go. I'm overly secure about my ability, but I'm afraid of something falling off. Bikes are much more dangerous, and I'm a sucky rider, but they don't scare me except when I'm about to wreck.

There is another thing nobody told me: When to stop riding, at least on two wheels. I found out after a couple of very minor, non-damaging drops. I wasn't ready to get out of the wind, so I converted to three wheels, something I never dreamed I would do. However I must admit that all three points you raised are still valid. Ride safe and I look forward to our next virtual meeting. ;-)
