Thank you for this Kirby. I've been following your work for more than 10 years and found your insight into remix culture so fascinating. Amazing to see it culminate in a brilliant piece of work. I have used it in my own work as a therapist too. This idea that we borrow, use, inhabit, and remix ideas, cultures, identities and beliefs to form a coherent sense of self, is so often overlooked when it comes to improving mental health, but it is, without doubt the cornerstone of how humanity works. Donald Winnicott, a therapist in the 1960s said, "there is no such thing as a baby, we are all born into a relationship with another" I think fits well here. Remix culture is an articulation that we are born into a fabric of identity created, and remixed by others, and that life is about our relationship with that fabric. Thanks again for all your hard work over the years. Good luck with what you move onto next.

From the day my best friend asked me to watch the first edition of this video more than a decade ago, it remains the most creatively inspiring thesis I've ever seen. It has inspired me to take myself both less and more seriously and not disregard any form of creativity that comes my way. My taste in all art forms has been expanded and it genuinely has been thanks to you. With all the noise around AI, I thought of this video and was glad to see you crystallise all my feelings about it so well, again. I'm also sad to see that this is your last video, but thank you for inspiring me all these years and to complete the circle, I'll be sharing this updated version with my friend! Good luck with everything!

Kirby, I remember watching the first edition of “Everything is a Remix” back in 2012 and it completely blew my mind! I’ve rewatched it every year since then. You’ve completely outdone yourself with this new edition!! It’s just as inspiring and it makes me sad to know you will no longer be continuing this great work. I’ve followed all of your work including your TED Talk (which I watch over and over again). I fully respect your decision but deep down I hope one day you will reconsider and discover more lucrative opportunities in the video content realm. I’ve grown so attached to your content. Thank you so much Kirby for all you’ve done and I wish you tremendous success in your next chapter👍🏾

17:06 "…Every word we speak is a meme that triumphed in the Great Meme Battle Royale. The English language, and _every_ language, is a megaremix of mouth sounds from around the world." My very favorite bit of insight from taking linguistics and language history courses with phonetics is this: Every mouth sound we make, and how we recognize each sound as part of our convention for creating words, has each gotten its start with single individuals. One person who's gone, "dammit, this is how I speak". And then, another individual has listened and picked up for themselves this funny, novel way of using sound. For every single sound, and the letters we use to symbolically represent them, too. One individual. It boggles the mind.
@wg85
@wg85 4 ай бұрын
Doesn’t work like that. Dialects and accents evolve collectively
@ErikHolten
@ErikHolten 4 ай бұрын
@@wg85 Yes, by convention and negotiation, dialects, accents and indeed languages do evolve socially (if not collectively). The mechanics of spreading a change must be social by necessity. By social contact and communication we imitate, learn, copy, borrow and steal features from other users of language, and they may do the same from us. Still, when you get back to the very first occurrence of a language feature, when it's an _innovation_ it's uttered by an individual. Afterwards it may spread in a limited circle, or immediately fall by the wayside, or become a globally recognized sound or word or phrase. An evolutionary survivor meme. But each mutation happens in an individual, just like with genetics. Cf. p. 85: Johnsen, Sverre S. 2020. “Grunnleggjande spørsmål om språkendring og norsk språkhistorie. Ein omtale av Norsk språkhistorie I - Mønster.” NLT - Norsk Lingvistisk Tidsskrift 37 (1): pp. 77-138.

Apple did NOT invent the smartphone. The iPhone was released in 2007. Not everybody may know that there was the IBM Simon in 1994, but many should remember the Blackberry Curve 8300, released in 2003, the Nokia N95, released in 2006 or one of the Windows Mobile smartphones. One of my classmates had a Nokia Communicator in the late 90s. Apple were probably the first, which made smartphones actually good, though. I remember Windows Mobile Phones being really sluggish and unintuitive. They often came with a stylus. My Blackberry had a trackball.

Thank you for the great video! One important thing you forgot talking about "ethical AI": All the images in the training set had to be labeled. (e.g. "This image contains a cat.") Especially violent pictures, because you would not want an AI to produce them. So the AI firms pay really poor people who have to look at gruesome pictures the whole day for a few millicents per tagged image. OpenAI did this in Kenya for ChatGPT with texts, Amazon did it in India. If you want to talk about ethical AI, you should include that the tagging of the data should be ethical as well and not happen in 3rd world sweatshops...

Thank you for this. As an artist and educator I've spent the majority of my professional life so far working to convince students, friends, or anyone else that drawing, painting, whatever is not creativity. Creativity lives in the idea, not in the skill used to express that idea. Ideas are always influenced by other ideas, there is nothing new under the sun. The panic among other artists regarding AI image generation is likely not much different than the uproar caused by the invention of photography in the mid 19th century. Yet there were a group of artists who took the principles of that technology, (focusing on how light defines the world around us) and used them as a starting point for human creativity. Today even with the fullness of the 20th century between us and them, people still remember the work of the Impressionists. Personally, I find the AI image generation revolution exciting and super interesting, and I'm keen to see how we artists can embrace this new technology to create something novel and exciting. When we lower the barrier to entry for creative expression I think we all win. Viva La Remix!

I am troubled by the fact that my own students still held on to the idea that their creations are exclusive and view AI generated art as not "original" or not "real" Art. They fail to realize that with this kind of mindset, they are just going to be left behind in the AI wave. "Everything is a Remix" is a great documentary to counter this thinking. Whenever I have "Artists" who hold onto their creations as completely original, I will direct them to this documentary. AI generated art is just going to make aspiring artists good and established artists even greater! For "Artists" still stuck in their own ways, I suggest they don't put any of their works online. I do propose that anything created with the help of AI should be labelled accordingly.

48:00 Thank you for pointing this out!! I came across "Everything is a Remix" years ago, I think it was on Vimeo, and I thought it´s excellent. I loved the mindset you are up to, because it makes just totally sense AND I hate the idea of "oh, that is called stealing, you have to be 100% original" (what´s that, 100% original??) and "look at all the copycats" (pfff...) which kinda never made sense to me. Also, the thing with Led Zeppelin makes me laugh every time :) So, I to rediscovered your work here on KZfaq lately and I´m happy this project still exists! Great work, thank you for doing it!
