Great review man was a blast lending the car to you! You are completely right though about the handling and refinement etc. Its definitely a big step down from the hondas but that engine almost makes it worth it haha.

Thanks for letting me drive it man! And yeah, agreed the engine makes it so worth it for the price. One of the last cars that can offer an over 8000rpm experience for an affordable price.

I personally think it handles really well tbh, can easily keep up with much faster cars on the mountain, super direct and stiff and has lift off oversteer. Just gotta give it to her hard lad she can take it :P

@@patrickbrown1794 the thing is Honda's (Integra in particular) hit a similar handling note but tend to be a lot more refined. Superstrut is brutal. It is effective but I remember cross shopping one with a DC2r and I went with the Integra Because it was just more ergonomic as a daily driver... Saying that, there's nothing much like the Celica in the price category anymore.

Always wanted something with a 2zz was leaning more towards the corollas for the sleeper look. That gen Celica never sat well with me but I’ll admit they’ve grown on me over the years

@@xXRacer9000Xx no xrs’s were sold in NZ unfortunately. Some 4 door hatchback versions came with 2zz. Corolla Z, sometimes labeled just Allex. Came in the fielder z wagon but no sedan I know of

I have a 370z but I had 2 Celicas back in the day. Gt&GTS. Had a rare Black Widow 2 body kit on one. Loved the hell out of that car. Felt so light, handled great, and still looks exciting to this day. The 2zz sounds amazing and the feeling you get when you rev it out feels fast, especially once it hits lift. But the lack of torque is it's biggest downfall. I'll definitely get another one, one day. Fantastic video!

@@smorley4359sorry I never replied, but the 370z is in a different class of speed for sure. You cant really do anything to the 2zz Celica that can make it close to how fast the 370. Maybe boost, but I think it’d be similar still. The one thing I love about the Celica is how light the chassis felt. You can chuck it around corners more than the 370 but the 370 feels way more substantial as a car. They both look amazing and have that racing vibe

The Celica GTS driver driving is a bit suspect. The Celica GTS makes the same power, but is about 600 - 700 lbs lighter than the Accord Euro S (TSX). 0-60 mph was tested in 6.6 seconds. I used to race RSX-S (Integra Type S) with 200 HP back in the day with my 2ZZ-GE Corolla XRS and used to do quite well against it as it was about 200 lbs lighter.

@@KiwiCarLife Well, the gearing and redline is different. In a 2ZZ-GE, the engine needs to be close to 6000 rpm starting out. Rolling start requires it to be close to that. Though, modding makes the story different.

Celica driver don't know how to keep the power in the lift.Celica 2zz is faster.

@@rekviemforadreamer2738 well, it just isn’t. The celica driver was really solid man. You can see it clearly in the roll race videos. Remember my car is modified with shorter gears and full bolt ons. Celica was stock besides exhaust.

In a race I started first in gear at about 5000RPM and in another race (highway) I was 2nd gear over lift engagement point. his accord is just faster

I use to own a Toyota Fielder Aerotourer Z with the 2zz for around 10yrs and it was still bulletproof at 330ks when I sold it. Nippy wagon that surprised lots of drivers especially once it screams past 6k with the TRD headers 🤗

Nice review. It's strange how the lift in the celica is only from 6k to 7800. The same engine in my sportivo has lift from 6200-8200. Also there isn't a different cam for lift but rather different cam lobes that engage with oil pressure. In my opinion the 2zzge is possibly the best mass produced naturally aspirated Toyota engine of all time. Finding a mint celica in Australia is harder than finding rocking horse poo.

@@teme5529 thanks man, and yeah almost all 2zz's go to 8250, this one included. Just the redline shows a little lower on the Celica. VVTL-i engagement is slightly different on all 2zz models too. 3sge beams engine has gotta be a close 2nd... Rwd too!

Yeah the way toyota handles it lift is probably better interms of less rotational mass on the cams

@@atom608 yeah and I think I didn't really explain the way it works too well... When I was saying "camshaft" I really meant "cam lobe" as there are two lobes on the one camshaft that it switches between. My bad...

Yes! I look up these celicas and the Corolla sportivo with the 2zz and they are just thrashed or have super high kays with crazy high prices. 🧐. Good luck to the sellers I guess, who wouldn’t try to get max bucks back on a car you thought you’d never even get half your money back on. You know another one I don’t see come up? Honda Accord Vti-S. Not sure if model designation but it’s the one with the H22 motor. I think they must have evaporate in the heat.

i used to have a toyota matrix xrs with a 2zz in it. The redline was higher on those (8200) so it was pretty funny to have that much fun packed into what looks like a mom wagon

We used to call the Celica the poor man's Integra, and that isn't a bad thing. They don't get the love they deserve. It was the BRZ/GT86 of its day.. it's just a shame they got abused by 'ricers' of its time. Its a great platform to start with

You looked to be enjoying yourself much more in the celica than other-"other" cars in these comparisons! I wonder how much the type-r gear set helps the CL9. I have both and they're both brilliant in their own ways. Even with a proper header on the cl9 the 2zz is much more exciting up top. This video makes me want to hold onto the celica for longer.

@@KiwiCarLife The celica would be good if the gearbox was not made of glass. I had a 2zzge corolla sportivo hatchback and the gearbox blew to pieces their very torqueless aswell. Honda has way more torque.

@@KiwiCarLife The accords has way better gearbox. I got myself a euro after the gearbox exploded. This accords held up to my abuse. Redline allday and clutch kick the shit out of it with over 300,000 kms 🤣

Hi, i have a 2001 corolla runx z corolla 6spd manual i picked up cheap, has the 2zz engine and its insane and with 250k on it too!. Good interior etc just feels like good quality. But in saying that i always wanted a type r or a nice euro r. Have to love these cars.

Think you enjoyed the celica more , with regards to quickness , I think if you didn't have that type R gear set we might be having a different discussion. I agree with you though, the accord is definitely better to live with and after a while the celica will become a chore to drive with that torqueless 2zz screamer . Great video loved the content . This is quite the apples to oranges comparison. While the GT-S is a more focused car, your modified Accord shows that one can still have plenty of fun in a luxury family sedan while also enjoying all of the other benefits it brings to the table. If limited to a single car, even in stock form the CL9 makes for a good all-around choice. The GT-S would make for a fun weekend toy, especially for those looking to stand out from the crowd. Your video provides a sense of why Lotus chose the 2zzge for the Elise and the Exige back in the day.

Yes, you're the first person to pick that up! My whole premace has been that you can't make a Celica more comfortable, it will always be a loud, rattly weekend toy. Whereas you can make the accord faster. Which is what I did and now it's as good of a driver's car as the Celica, but wayyy more liveable every day.

​@@KiwiCarLife To be fair to the Celica, it definitely has the ability to be the better driver's car of the two (which stock-for-stock is certainly true). However, it will never be capable of coddling the driver the way your Accord is and as you noted, that is of particular important to you. At the end of the day, every car is a compromise in some way. Knowing your own preferences is key.

Yeah tbh I was surprised too... I still claim he jumped the start a little in both races lol (you can see in the motorway race especially he started from a higher speed) but either way, there was never a race we did where he "won". Still mighty fast tho as you say. Did not expect it to keep up at all

@@KiwiCarLife I think that with some bolt-ons and a tune on the celica, the matchup would've been a little closer (in my opinion) Yet it does cost a lot to modify these cars, since you need a standalone to replace your ecu for tuning etc..

I have a 5speed auto accord with all the same mods your accord has in this video over the passed year of ownership, lovely car and is amazing to drive however I’ve always wanted a stick shift and have found a 7th gen stock celica with a 6spd manual and lower kms for the same price my car is worth. Would you make the change?

Sold our Red 06 Celica GT here in UK 2 and a half years ago for 2k, the last they made of them with body kit, lowered suspension etc from factory. Had 120k miles on clock but had been well looked after with one previous owner for the first 20k miles. Even had the new unused spare alloy in boot that came with the GT. Had a new clutch at 80k and only started needed odd bits doing here and there after the 110k mark. The problem was the heater matrix packed in, Mrs needed it for winter mornings, to replace that the whole dash needs removing, garages didn't want the work, or said the labour cost was ridiculous, hence the cheaper selling price. The actual part was cheap though . Also there was advisory on oil on last Mot but they didn't know from where. So we sadly said goodbye as thought was right time. Been watching the prices go up and up now, lol. If had a bigger garage would of sorn it off road and kept it away to work on in future.

DC5 would have been a better comparison to the Celica. I always thought that final model Celica was designed by Toyota as a direct competitor to the Vtec DC2.

I believe that Celica was more of a competitor to the integra type r with it's 1.8L. Production years were slightly before the DC5, though they did run for about the equivalent times.

2ZZ Celica vs K20a3 DC5 would make an Interesting comparison since both are in a similar price category. Celica has a very narrow torque band while the K20a3 is broad but not as quick

I put my jdm celica almost identical to the one in the vid, againist a jdm k20 dc5 that had an intake,lsd, exhaust and rsm. Before i fitted an lsd and no mods except proper trd backbox. Surprised me big time, kept to the bumper till 4th gear but then the k20 just pulls that bit harder. Must do another run againist one as iv fitted an lsd and freshened it up a bit

Sorry man but I despise those android head units haha. You'll never see one in my car! For the 1 in 100 time I need to navigate somewhere I just stick my phone in the center console, and for music I use an fm transmitter. No need to spend hundreds on a henious looking, unreliable, laggy unit that totally ruins the stock lines of an old car dashboard

@@KiwiCarLife Yeah. I think one of Toyota’s greatest mistakes was not offering the 2zz in the MKIII MR-2. I always found that super confusing considering they found the business case to drop one in the Toyota…… Matrix 🥴 P.S, I used to own that same “Accord”, albeit a North American version (TSX). The US TSX made about 152kw. It was one of my favorite cars but sadly my brother in law totaled it.

I have a 2000 (or 1999, technically) GTS model, like the one in this video - it's even white too lol, although sadly without the "action package" like the one here is shown with. I bought it around 8 years ago as my previous car left me on the side of the road. I just wanted something to have fun with, and never would have considered the Celica if it weren't for the deal falling into my lap. It was small, manual, and the design is surprisingly modern even after two decades - I feel like it doesn't look like a 24 year old vehicle. And with the sunroof, leather interior, 76k OG miles for only $4k, it checked all my boxes at the time. The 2zz is really fantastic, it's quite surprising how it feels and sounds, especially when you get on it. It's not a "fast" car by most metrics, the word I like to use is "quick," but the bottom line is it's just hella fun to mess around in. It's nearly impossible not to be smiling from ear to ear when ringing out gears to 8k all the way through 6th. Let's just say entering the highway is a good bit of fun lol. I have a blast in this car even with otherwise mundane tasks, like heading to the grocery store. The best part is, for a 24 year old car, I get an average of 33.2 mpg city/highway combined according to my Ultragauge, and I do quite a bit of both city and highway, even during my more spirited driving sessions haha. I really enjoyed seeing this car on your channel, and seeing your reaction to driving it. It made me smile seeing you smile because I know exactly how that feels. I learned something today too, I never knew Toyota offered this with an LSD. Sadly they did not offer that as an option in the US!

can tell by the top mounts that it has superstrut suspension, and going off how the car looks and how most of them get thrashed there is a very good chance the suspension is worn out which does cause vague and unpredictable handling

hey mate owner of the celica here, it is the SS version of the celica with the LSD from factory, front end feels kinda vague sometimes especially in the rain. Recommend rebuilding the suspension or going straight to coil overs for this one? Just had the gearbox rebuilt so suspension is next on my list

@@atom608 coilovers are quite hard to get for superstrut, most of the coilovers for it will require your old shock to be cut just above the balljoint and welded on to the bottom of the coilover. because it holds the weight of the car it is very difficult to get a cert with the weld type coilovers, and you can have issues with not having enough stroke. tein has coilovers that are made to order for it, but also require your old shocks but i cant find much information about them so unsure if they are welded or not. only bolt on coilover ive been able to find is aragosta which is like 5k nzd + freight from japan. rebuilding the suspension is the easiest route, about to start doing it on my celica. there is more to it than shocks though, you will most likely need to replace the 3 arms that make up the superstrut suspension. recommend checking for play and the condition of the boots, have done quite a bit of research on this so any questions just ask :)

As you said Accord looks like a basic car, heaps of them at the streets. Celica’s look is just stand out, and spot on in a city. That’s a difference, power is another story, depends how you mod it, any car can be fast if you make it fast.

As someone who owned a corolla t sport with the 2zz and now owns a type r with a K20 I can say the type r is better on every single aspect. The corolla was to soft, the engine didn't have alot of potential beyond the factory specs unless you throw alot of money at it, the gearbox was terrible, you would actually fall out of lift when shifting unlesa you let the clutch slip (and believe me I've tried to keep it there but even on the redline you still drop out of it) and it was just an overal worse experience. Toyotas are very good reliable cars but Honda just knows best how to build a fun car and it really shows

I have only heard about 180hp gt-s models or so. Celica T-Sport 2001 (the one I drive) has 192hp. And yeah if that gt-s has 192hp stock, then it is the same thing.

The model you drove is a ss-II jdm, it would be the most powerful of the "normal" stock 2zz due to a more aggressive fuel map with 99 ron but with an 180km/h speed limiter. The top stock celica gen 7 2zz that you can get is called a sports m, limited run with trd engine and suspension tuning from factory, custom sports m body parts. Ss-II's just usually had extras added at the factory like the trd action kit, lsd,upgraded sound system, leather interior, projector lights etc

Taken into consideration that your Honda Accord is modified and the celica is bone stock outside of exhaust.. The celica is definitely the cooler car of the two because it was actually made to be that way the accord you have to modify it

Yeah ofc man we're all entitled to our own opinion. Stock for stock I'd be taking a celica too, but I guess my point is that I've owned integras in the past and they are so loud and uncomfortable and cheaply made and featureless that I've come to realise a better way to get a "perfect" car for me is to buy a luxury car that is quiet, comfortable and featuresome, and make it loud and fast. And that's what I've done and if people like me don't want a car that's uncomfortable with a cheap plasticy interior with no features, they should do the same. I try to keep my videos as short and concise as possible so maybe some key points got left out there but yeah hope that makes sense. Also it's getting harder and harder to compare cars fairly as my car is modified lol. Can't exactly just take it back to stock for the video haha

Not a fair comparison between these two engines... one 1.8 vs 2.4? You need to go 1.8 vs 1.8 . Kseries is the best 4 cylinder engine ever made but dam the 2zz is a very fun engine too.

Some cars are just too perfect to drive. The steering is too refined. The engines are too refined. Modern cars are far too predictable and not as fun. The Celica has some character that makes it one word: FUN. And you can see it in his face. You watch other videos of Celicas and the same word comes to mind: FUN. It is not so much a sportscar but more of a roadster car. Overall, it is and still is a very very FUN car.

I have a 2004 celica. My interior is much nicer...still lots of plastic but the seats are better. My 2016 rav 4 is much faster. I had a 2006 accord and sold it for the celica 7 years ago. Not a fan of Hondas really. I've owned 2 and had bad luck with both.

Nothing against what you have to say, but you stated if the current celica verses your personal accord, which one wins, when for one that's the car you built. Of course you love your car vs the celica. But then you said if the added money you put on the accord into the celica and all of the places you didn't like you would like. So your basically stating if you had the same mods on the celica as the accord you would pick it! It was only certain things you didn't like because that's not your car nor your choice of mods. If you had it your way or opposite where the celica was more modified then the accord you would choose the celica because it was to your liking. I own both a celica and accord, and I completely disagree , being that the role is opposite. I have years with my celica and spent roughly over 20,000 over trial and error and being a teenager and modifying differently then I ever would now and I have a accord I picked up 3 years ago, spent less money, use it everyday. I love my celica over my accord, stock vs stock the celica, mod vs mod its personal opinion, especially if your car is in the mix. At first I thought you were comparing them fairly being this is my first video watching from you, but the mods are different and a personal car is in there, how can we base this truth vs opinion? Coming in that's what my expectations were. Video was nice, but for those who don't own either car, that's not far for you to give this opinion, because if your accord was stock, vs the celica, it would bounce more and take a bit more time to catch up, feel way more comfortable then the celica, but that's why the celica out the box is more of a sport car then the accord. It's not much of a comparison stock that's why most dont do a video with these cars, nor is their personal vehicle, that they most likely will choose because it's their build vs a less modified vehicle, is in the video. Please educate the people right, so the ones that need the education, and is does not have the luxury of driving either cars get the info they deserve, so when they are out there looking for a car, they have the right idea in mind. So next time this should be his car vs mine. Because I bet it wouldn't be far if my celica was against your accord. You have the power to control your videos, please educate everyone correctly.

Thank you for the feedback but you have missed my point. Stock for stock, the Celica is a better sports car obviously, but the practicality and interior features and build quality let it down. This is something you cannot change. However you can make the accord a better sports car. Like I said at the end, id be buying an accord and spending a little extra on some lowering springs, headers and reflash to make it as fast and sporty as the Celica. Then you end up with a sports car that's also well built, featuresome, quiet and practical. The Celica will always be a plasticy, noisy, uncomfortable car and you can't change that. Also if you think Celica vs Accord is weird comparison well like I said at the start the whole point is that it's lightweight sports car vs heavy sedan. I've owned integras and accords back to back so people do cross shop these kinds of cars together. And I concluded that for the price the Celica is a great car, but for me because I value features, build quality, practicality and a smooth and refined driving experience (something that you will never be able to remedy with the Celica) I'd get more luxurious car to start with and mod it, rather than buying an already sporty car that will be plasticy and uncomfortable. If you put headers, reflash and lowering springs on the Celica it wouldn't make me prefer it because I still wouldn't be able to get over the trash interior.

kind of a weird comparison, should have compared the celica against the Civic type R,, same price range and model range this accord is not a EURO R just a normal Euro.... and a sedan.

Still gonna be left with a rattly, noisy, uncomfortable plasticy car with no features sorry man. That's the whole premace I'm making. You can do all the mods you want to the Celica but I'd still be getting out with my ears bleeding and with a sore back lol. Absolutely the Celica (stock or modified) is a better sports car, but a modified accord is a better car all rounder.

@@KiwiCarLife The Celica is about driving it offers a more raw experience don’t really care about plastic interior pieces it’s not a Bentley it’s about being sporty some people like a more raw experience over the Honda Accord more dull experience

@@Toyota4Life you haven't even driven my accord so how can you say it's a dull experience lol - my argument this whole time has been stock vs stock, the accord is a better daily and the Celica is the better driver's car. But you'll never be able to make the Celica a better daily, but you can make the accord a better driver's car. I'd love to see you live with that Celica as your only car for 2 years... I think you'd get pretty sick of it

Settled for a rundown look like this one in the review for my first trd edition Celica Gts 😝👍 I wanted a clean looking car but the Gts 6speeds are very rare here where I live, the sports car like feel for a fwd makes up & plus I get great gas for a daily. I’m working with this Celica until I find one much cleaner I just hope the prices don’t mark up like the other jdm legends…
