Great video! Thanks for the opportunity to get into this competition. Just a tip while filing the bevels. I find it useful to put a sharpie mark on the edge of the bevel closest to you in order to see where the file is taking material away. It is a little easier to judge when to stop or move the file down.

I'm making my first start to finish knife starting next week. Making it from an old bastard file my grandfather saved to make a knife from. It's not uniform in thickness, so it'll be interresting to attempt. I'm thinking of buying some different steel in the mean time lol
@Wengelsworkshop
@Wengelsworkshop 10 ай бұрын
Awesome! I would definitely recommend picking up some steel so you know exactly what you are working with. if you want your grandfathers file to become an heirloom i would recommend saving that until you have made a few knives and have more skills. good luck either way!

Amazing! I love your channel! I’ve watched a ton of your videos. Being someone who has never actually made a knife. How long would you say it took you to hand grind that blade (using a file and sand paper) once you already had it cut out Just curious because I might try to make one. Thanks!
@Wengelsworkshop

Thanks for the support Jason! I think it took me about 1.5 hours per side with the file. And maybe another 1.5 hours sanding total. It is very time consuming but is so worth it in the end. It is so rewarding to make a knife. I would highly recommend making one!

What are the different grits of sandpaper you used?
@Wengelsworkshop
@Wengelsworkshop 8 ай бұрын
in this case the scratches were very deep bc it was ground with a file so i had to start with a low grip sand paper. i think it was 60. but say if you use a belt grinder and finish with a grit like 220 i would start hand sanding with maybe 150

Never heard before that steel is poisonous requiring a respirator to safely work.
@andrewallason4530
@andrewallason4530 4 ай бұрын
Yeah. Not listed as being poisonous on any tech sheet I can find. However, can severely irritate lungs and airways, mouth and sinuses, eyes and skin. Prolonged exposure is a possible cause of lung cancer and other lung conditions. But it’s not poisonous.

@@andrewallason4530its really arguing semantics at this point. Grinning metal throws dust into the air and it’s bad for your lungs. It gives you welder lung and other issues that shorter life. Just wear a respirator. That’s all we need to focus on.

If you are making the knife with a file like I did 1/8 of and inch or roughly 3 mm. Anything thicker adds a lot of time to the filing process that already takes a lot of patience.

@@jimmycamacho3264 because filing without a handle, with the rather pointy tang nestled into your lower palm is a good way of impaling yourself on it. It's inherently unsafe.
