Nice work Jeff. You hate them glass stones almost as much diamonds. I like both honest, some of the glass stones are temperamental but there are some really good ones too. I've been messing with 3m diamond films from taytools lately. the 120 um to 45 um come on 5 mm backing and the 30 um to 0.01 um come on 3 mm film backing with a psa coating that is generally affixed to float glass. The 120 um cuts like 140 atoma, which I'd honestly never use for anything other than lapping stones anyway, and leaves an edge more more the 400 or better, all depending on how you use it really. Doing strokes neither leading or trailing but parallel can give much smoother and less "toothy" edge but of an acute apex has bite just without with the saw like micro serrations. The 200 grit or 80 um i think it is is even better. They "break in" like all coated abrasives but last with care imo about as well plates however the surface these films leave is more precise than the best waterstones I've used. Idk if you've tried those or the DMD resin bonded diamond stones from China. Those were wicked too. The "1k" is like a fast aggressive 400, the 3k is actually really 3k and also cuts really well, the "12k" is like lets say 5k at best though I'd consider it more like a 4k cuz I dont consider it a finishing stone, it can for sure create small burrs with ease. They're all hard and slow wearing. For like $40 or whatever each, hard to beat for edges. I will say they don't smell great. Cant be worse than the glass stone ,
@Jef
@Jef 4 ай бұрын
Parallel? That sounds like it would make the apex unstable. To see an example look at any pull thru sharpener. But hey if it works for by all means 🤘 I don’t hate the glass stones. They do what they need. I just hate the misconceptions around them. Plus they are like ceramics. Soulless. I don’t know how better to describe it than that. They do what is necessary but there is no style, love, quam, zen, whatever you want to call it.

You got a link to those dmd resin stones you were talking about? Id like to check those out. Ive used lapping films before. Wasnt my cup of tea. Still got quite a few a viewer sent me to try. I may fish em out and play around again. Science of sharp says the ones he had were basically sic. Not diamond. 🤷‍♂️

@@Jef I read that too which is why I avoided them for a long time. He later clarified what he meant. He tested the "12k" rated stone which like I said leaves a finish equivalent to a glass 4k, nowhere near 12k. They are diamond, quite a lot of it, when you hold the 1k or 3k to light it glitters like a disco ball. I've tested them on everything from basic stainless steel to 10v steel and even a kyocera innovation series ceramic knife and they grind efficiently. I didn't order the full size stones until I tested all the grits on the little $10 versions that are about half an inch by three inches in size. Then I ordered the full size which cost me about $50 each. I ordered from the "DMD Experience store" on ali. I'll get a link in another comment cuz youtube is weird sometimes. 1k is about 400. the 3k is basically a 3k or close to it in the finish it leaves. The 6k I've heard folks say they can't even tell the difference from the 3k. I wouldn't doubt if there was some sic in them, I suspect there is some green chromium oxide in them s well which is why I think they look green and smell the way they do. But. They're legit.

Underrated stone. I still usually skip it and go to the 2k. I just like that stone a little more. They're pretty similar though
@Jef
@Jef 5 ай бұрын
It’s an oddity. Not as coarse as the 1k and not as fine as the 2k. I find the 2k, for work like this, just goes too slow. This one was being leisurely when removing those factory grind lines. It worked itself out, eventually 👌
@AnarchAngel1
@AnarchAngel1 5 ай бұрын
@Jef Yeah, I wouldn't wanna do something like this with the 2k. Although honestly I probably wouldn't have picked this stone either 😅 I probably would have just used a 1k and then jumped to a middle grit stone. I think you were looking for a one stone solution however so the 1.5k was a good choice. You've gotta bust out the stones you rarely use sometimes 😅

Thanks for the fix Jef. Love watching these. Question. I have all the Shapton Kuromaku stones except the 12k, 30k and the 1.5k. Though I have no desire for the 2 highest grits, I do wonder if the 1.5k would fill my 1k/2k gap? I think I read somewhere that the 1.5 was made for stainless. Educate me please. Thanks Jef. Cheers!
@Jef
@Jef 5 ай бұрын
12k and 30k are for razors imo. I dont see any benefit personally, going higher than 5k on knives. The only reason i would is polish. Edge wise, imo, the benefits are minuscule. That said, if you have the 1k and 2k, you’re missing nothing. The 1.5k id recommend to someone who didnt have both. If you were buying a set for the first time, i might recommend 320, 1.5k, and 5k. Its just a filler that can take the place of both. As for one being made for a steel vs another, a user on my previous video, discussed this. Look for rockets4kids posts on the rockstar stone videos. Honestly, i just say use what you have. If it works, it works. Follow your results, and do not listen to the chatter. I still have people arguing with me, about sic vs diamond 🙄

Hey jef I have a question for you about the gritomatic sic stones you use. Ive had a few generic silicon carbide stones in the past, i havent really had much luck with them, when using them as water stones they just drink tons of water, etc. The gritomatic ones, are they different? As in whatever they use to bond the silicon carbide, etc. I was gonna just buy one cuz i mean they definitely look a bit different, and I dont think ive ever seen a generic silicon carbide stone that was higher than 400 grit or so, so it would be interesting to see 1000 or 2500. I guess my question is are they basically the same or are they completely different?? Thanks -Dave
@Jef
@Jef 5 ай бұрын
Completely different. They behave more like water stones. They do need a quick soak, but 5 mins has always got me going. They shed grit, meaning they are friable. Most the cheap sic stones you see are bound so hard, they are impossible to use effectively. Gritomatic is on a whole different level.

Jef what are your thoughts on the 1500 shapton vs the 1000? I had the 1500 and I really like it, but the next lowest one I had was the 320 and I just ordered the 1000 because i heard the 1000 cuts more like a 600-800. I guess I will test it myself here in a few days, but we’ll see. I always love watching your vids!!
@Jef
@Jef 5 ай бұрын
Yes the 1k seems to cut a bit more aggressively than other brands. It is faster than this 1500 for sure. Personally, id prob skip this stone altogether, if i were buying a set. I would do 320, 1k, 2k, and 5k. It just gives more versatility. Need to remove micro chips, use the 1k. Just need a touch up? Pop out the 2k. 1500 is just there to kind of take the place of both. It can handle the work, as well as refine, but like many jack of all trades, it isnt best at either.

@@Jef yeah i think i started with the 320, 1.5k(cuz 1k was out of stock) and the 5k. I love the 5k. I wonder if the 2k is worth getting when i have the 1.5? I feel like i will likely get the 2k eventually
@Jef
@Jef 5 ай бұрын
Is the 2k worth getting? I say yes. However since you already have this stone, it isn’t really needed. I use 320, 1k, 5k often. Having a stone in between the 1 and 5k is nice, but it can handle the scratches. Just might take you a few extra strokes. So, if you got the money, and just want a bridge, i say go for it. If i you are tight on cash, you really aren’t missing much, if anything. We are after all, talking the difference, between 1500-2000 grits. Not a big jump.
@Jef
@Jef 5 ай бұрын
Youll see a noticeable difference beteen 1k and 1500. It just feels scratchier, and is indeed, faster. So that one, will be a bit eye opening. The difference between the 1.5 and 2, seems to be much smaller.

Thanks 🙏 i appreciate the kind words. For shapton you can go several ways. 320, 1k, 5k …. Or 320, 1.5k, 5k. The 1.5 is versatile enough to take the place of not just the 1k, but the 2k, as well. Either way, you can’t go wrong. I do think, the 1 and 2k have thier place, and would personally, do a 4 stone set.

@@Jef Thanks. I’m new to your channel and learned you don’t care for diamond stones in general. My understanding is that the lower grit Shaptons can dish significantly and that diamond is preferred for reprofiling and repairs. Especially for harder steels.
@Jef
@Jef 3 ай бұрын
It is true carbide rich steels may benefit more from diamond, but shapton are perfectly capable of handling most. I have yet to find many stones that cut faster or more agressively, than a shapton pro 120. Yes they can dish quickly but it is easily mitigated. Just flatten them 🤷‍♂️. Could always look towards gritomatic sic stones as well. Just as quick and aggressive, and cut every steel ive put against em

Im considering between this shapton pro 1.5k, the shapton pro 2k, the glass 1k/2k and naniwa pro 800. Difficult chosing between them. Would tou say the shaptons load up much? I also have heard many describe the glass series as dead, souless or no feedback. Is that the case?
@Jef
@Jef 4 ай бұрын
I may have started the “Shapton glass are soulless” bit. 😂 my bad. It’s true, but they do work. They work very well, actually. As do Shapton pro. Glass just have no personality. Yes, they do load, but it rinses off easily enough. Naniwa, on the other hand, have cracking issues. The 800, I have not seen to be the case. However, 1k-10k will spider web crack on you, if you do not lap them, after every single use. It’s a waste of abrasive, and money, if you ask me. If the ones above are your choices, I would go shapton pro all day, and never look back. Sharpening stones I recommend kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMmgpbh5tJq-l6c.html
