Okay, lets start off by saying that, regardless of what the side of the box says, this knife is anything but Historically Accurate! But dang if it isn't one solid, well made knife that is sure to please, especially at the price you'll pay for it! In this video I compare it to the knife I think it is based off of and then review the build of the knife. (Releasing a day early because of KnivesLive TV tomorrow!)

Finally! A can opener that is a bevelled blade! All the Scout Knives I've seen lately are unsharpened.

It has nice curb appeal. I like the profile of the handle. I don't remember any issue knives looking like that but I do remember the camp knife with steel handle and US in the middle. I was issued a Camillus automatic opening knife with my flight gear. I remember thinking I have a nicer switchblade than this but not one with a bail to tie the cord to attaching it to my flight suit. I kept it in my A bag incase there was a deployment inspection but don't remember ever using it for anything other than that. Jumping out of a KC 135 was never going to happen anyway. Thinking back, if I had bought knives rather than alcohol with my money I could open a knife museum today.

I like the MIL-J knife, very similar to the Swiss Army Soldier 1961-2008 (Pioneer is the civilian equivalent still in production), I reckon someone in the Swiss military, or at Wenger or Victorinox, saw the US version and copied it...but I'm glad they did as now we can get the Pioneer range new at reasonable prices. I saw the Marbles ''GI Jack'' knife on Heinnie Haynes here in the UK, it appeared there about a month ago. It's a very reasonable price at just £13, and according to reviews on that site it's well made and robust. Might add one to my next order with them. As to British Army issue clasp knives like the Burma knife, when I served in the late 80s/early 90s they weren't generally issued, at least not in Infantry or Royal Signals, except for to Combat Linemen in the Royal Signals, as they needed to work with rope as well as cables. I was a Radio Operator and didn't get any knife issued although we did have machetes on our Landrovers (for clearing brush in locations), so I bought a Victorinox GAK old-style in Germany and carried it for a few years during and after my service, unfortunately I lost it in Berlin in the late 90s. Nowadays I tote my Farmer if I want something similar as an EDC, or take my new Vic Soldier if I'm going into the wilds.

Great review of the GI Jack. I thought they were getting confused with the British knives. Whatever they call it, I like it. Marbles also make a hawkbill in the diamond pattern with a US stamp in the handle. I don't think the US military had an issue hawkbill with the diamond pattern handle.

Tobias, Funny enough, I have a Greece Army 2 blade jack knife. It has on one scale "E.(the letter for epsilon). 1980" with fiber like scales, and a wide flare type bale. The knife blade and the can opener and bottle opener look just like the one one the WW2 Burma knife. An no screw driver blade extension.

i bought a marbles rigging - sailors knife same scales as this g.i. jack knife but the liner lock was thin as paper and any amount of back pressure to test it would slide it back across the uneven grind and catastrophic failure would shut the blade on anyone's hand that was holding it. or when you opened it the liner lock would travel to far and end up on the other side stuck the only good thing about that knife was the marlin spike and it didn't even lock so i ground off the rivets took it apart tossed the scales in the scrap metal bucket and still have the spike and blade for some unforeseen future project. needless to say this one first purchase soured me on any new marbles product for good. i think in the end i will stick with my 1977 camillus version of the knife in hand today or my utica boy scout ir my h.y.kaufmann german version of the ww2 issue with the marlin spike instead of the punch

As always really like seeing and hearing about the older more rare knives. It obviously isn't the knife it claims to be. Yet it does resemble sort of the Burma knife of that period. Might be an interesting pick up.

Marbles did a good take on the Burma knife, they just named it wrong. It pairs nice to the Marbles utillity knife. For an edc it sure will serve you right and i allways found my Marbles knives well built and pretty sturdy. Thank you for the review and the context where to place this knife with the correct historical information on the GI Jack.

I don’t have anything like these in my collection. Knife collecting is never ending, this rabbit hole I’ve jumped into is mind boggling. I had an ex Australian Army knife which I used a lot when I lived there but it was more like the Burma knife you have. I wish I had kept hold of it now. Great selection. Happy holidays 🎅🏻👍.

I found out it is close copy of an Italian Army knife from the 1980s. The difference is the Italian Army knife has OD Green plastic covers. So in many ways, this one is probably more durable.

I got one of these knives too. For the price they are great little knives; mine had no gaps and the blade was centered. One thing; I noticed about this knife and other Marbles knives from China, they are cleaner than Rough Rider models. As far as historic correctness goes; Chinese copies of original pattern models are seldom ever correct. They make them the way they think and that is always a little different from the originals. That might not be the case in some; but, is the case in lots of others. You will only notice it when comparing one to the other. Then you can decide if the copy is better than the original. 🎄🎅😺

I just ordered one of these. Dont care about history, it just seems like a a tough little 'rough' or 'beater' knife. Especially at $7, im not afraid to beat the tar out of it. doing the things you shouldnt with a knife. Scraping battery terminals, cutting copper wire, etc. Sharpen on a grinder, and good enough. The can opener/bottle opener is just a bonus. I always carry a pair, or three, knives. A decent large knife, a good pocket knife, and a cheap beater for rough use. Most of those dont last two years.

È someone already noticed it looks very much like my old italian army Pocket knife, except mine had plastic handle with army shield embossed. It replaced our straight copies of ww2 Brit knives like you showed, so i think it's that design too may have been copied from somewhere else.

You Are correct, more or less. They were available in post/base exchanges and ship Stores. These were Camillus made knives from the later years and stamped U.S.N., U.S.M.C., or U.S.A.F. The ones from WWII were stamped U.S. Marine Corps. U.S. or not at all. They most often will feature stainless steel covers, brass liners, and carbons steel back springs and blades and no date. These were issued items. The later made knives are all stainless steel with a dated blade. see: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gqmeprKavtPRiX0.html

The black ones may be from England. They will often say "Sheffield" or the name of the maker if they are from England. After WWII, Italy and Belgium also made the same knives for their military. I believe they were also used by Yugoslavia. The patterns was widely adopted after the war.

I don’t get why every single tool has to have a bottle opener on it (not just pocket knives, but freakin’ everything- rulers, screwdrivers, you name it). There are probably 500 ways to open a bottle without a “cap lifter”- and anyway, how many bottle openers do you need? Maybe tool designers need to cur down on their beer consumption.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 2 жыл бұрын
My personal thought... its an easy thing to add so they add it. I guess before screw caps it was a feature that many used and appreciated but today it is not nearly as important. I liked it when Victorinox sharpened a portion of the inside curve of the cap lifter. It made it handy for cutting line and such. If companies would continue to do this today the cap lifter would be more handy.

There was a particular Marine Unit in the South Pacific during WWII (don’t recall which one) that had received a commendation with a particular badge on the dress uniform that had the letter “V”. When they came to Australia for some R&R, they discovered that a different Marine Unit had told all the prostitutes that the “V” indicated that these men had a venereal disease. They couldn’t get a date to save their lives! 😆
