If you need to do a Knockdown Texture on a small drywall repair, you might be wondering how to apply the drywall texture. I'm going to show you a very simple, and cheap way to Texture it, and it cost about $2.00. Click the 'Show more' or down arrow on mobile, to view much more.
I'm a 35 year pro, and I use this on small wall repairs to match the texture. You don't need to buy a knockdown texture repair kit, or a can of spray texture, or even a texture hopper.
If you like learning drywall skills, subscribe but BE SURE to hit the ALL Bell or you won't see notices of new videos.

Thank you for the tip, it came in handy for me! I'm working about an hour and a half from the house I had textured a whole house with a rented spray rig and I missed one little spot in the living room and this saved me from having to go home and get my Hopper and go through all that just for a 6 inch by 6 inch spot that wasn't noticed until it was painted.

Guy--your videos are awesome and very accessible even to a total novice like me. I'm embarrassed to admit how much time I have spent watching them recently. Anyway, you have given me hope that I might actually be able to repair the cracks in my wall--and then texture it--on my own. If I can pull this off, it will feel super empowering, and all thanks to you. Tomorrow is the "big day".

BAD NEWS- Hey everyone, as of 9/21/20 we have some bad news. We are suddenly being kicked out of our rental due to the sale of the home, (we were planning on buying next summer) and I'm having some tough medical issues such as Prostate Cancer, Permanent Vertigo, Restless Legs, Neuropathy (nerve damage) etc. So we put out a video explaining this and many of you asked us to create a Gofundme so you could say thanks for all the help I've given you on these videos, my comments, etc. I really hesitated, as I hate asking for donations, but then you said it wasn't a donation, it was a way for you to say thanks. So if you want to know more here's the video explaining what all has been going on (moved 9 times in 12 years, my wifes 3 knee replacements, and much more). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7h9qq6Qsbq1gac.html You can also just read about it on the gofundme page at: gf.me/u/yzzrkz NOTE: please don't contribute if it puts any strain on you at all, and there is zero expectations, or anything like that. But if you'd like to give back, Thank you.

The sponge combined with the Homax 7" knockdown knife worked perfect. For me just a tad bit of thinning regular joint compound and about 10 minutes setup time was just about right. I think it did a way better job then these overpriced aerosol cans and you have so much more control for blending. Thank you!!

Thanks for the comment, and yes, you do need to practice first. You can practice on the wall, and if it does't work, just wipe or scrape it off, but you do risk damaging the repair so the best is to practice on an unfinished wall in a garage, or a scrap piece of sheetrock, or even go buy a 2'x2' piece of rock from Lowes or Homedepot. Really good video......a great tip is to roll a little paint on the textured part because your need to paint anyway. Press the sponge lightly to that part and you’ll have a perfect impression of the texture to be matched.....pull away the clean part of sponge 🧽

If you are going to texture very much, try thinning the mud down a little bit and putting it in something like a dishpan and dabbing the sponge into it instead of the way I showed on the video. Let me know how it goes.

Thank you! I have to do the ceiling in the bath ( the drywallers have not come back to finish, it’s been 3weeks) The restore the ceiling corner…the large corner ceiling repair is now smooth, rest of it is popcorn. So I thought to smooth down the whole bath to look like your example here a flat texture.? That would be easy for me I think.I 70 but in good shape. I can be on a ladder. Yours is a blessing of a vid for me. Cause finding folks to work in the N Georgia mountains has been hard.

Spray texture is expensive and drys up way to fast in the can. Totally agree there.

Good video. I've done this and it definitely gets the "good enough" grade. I've even used rough rollers and a mixture of water and dry wall compound to do orange peel on entire walls. I bought a texturing sprayer, but between the mess and trouble of getting the texture right it just was not worth it for someone who only does this occasionally.

Ive actually been getting great results with this sponge for knockdown. As for spraying I get near perfect results that way but it takes understanding the parameters which i explain in this video. 🍊Spraying ORANGE PEEL TEXTURE. Learn the 🔐 SECRETS 🔐 only PROS know using this $30 Tool

If it doesn’t, scrape it off and try again with thicker or thinner mud, and less of it on the surface, etc. Sometimes experimentation is how I get to the final result.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY So nice of you to reply. I did try it. I have a very small space in the kitchen, hard to get to, mine was way too thick it looked really bad. I made it smooth. I'll try again today. Thank you for the encouragement.

Well I'm here to help. To thick means either the mud was to thick, our you put it on covering to much area (put less on the sponge), or you knocked it down to flat by knocking it down to soon or with to much pressure. A good idea is to practice on a scrap piece of rock. You can buy 2'x2' pieces at Lowes & I believe home Depot. I can't believe I just found you're video ! I have gone thru 4 bottles of the spray texture and I cannot ever empty out a whole can without it clogging up,very frustrating to say the very least ! Too expensive and I live 18 miles one way from the closest town , so I racked my brain trying to figure out a way to make a homemade way to do this and couldn't think of anything so I thought maybe someone on utube might know of a way and I was so lucky that you popped up immediately! I know I have one or two of those sponges in my garage and I'm going to try it right now ! Thankyou so very much for putting this info out there

I've been using a sponge like that. What I did was took a large Dowell, 1-1/4" dia. about 3-1/2' long, cut a 2x4 about 3-1/2" long, Put a 1-1/4" hole in it. Then a Plywood scrap about 1/4" smaller than the Sponge, & Epoxy the 2x4 to the Plywood, & the Dowell into the hole in the 2x4. Staples also work good. Finally, round off the end of the Dowell handle & Epoxy the sponge to the Plywood. This works very good.

I found a good way to make knockdown printing spongs is to get the sponge damp and put it in the freezer. I then can generate a pattern of whatever size valleys I want in the frozen surface with a Dremel tool or whatever.

I'll be honest... you don't give yourself credit on this because you're used to the big dog.. This looks fantastic! You know how rental homes look with handymen run though it doing handyman specials throughout the house. This texture in most homes even new homes that YOU did would blend in both ways. This is better than our home I'm renovating now. it has every texture known to man throughout the house LOL. There's one I call "Skip stipple" LOL. Yours looks great man! Go easy on yourself vet!
