Would a leak down test have showed this?
@clsmallenginerepair3814

Yes,, I have one, but rarely use it. A leak down tester would also show worn rings. If u hav exhaust fumes coming from the crank case, from oil dip stick tube. Its a head gasket. These engines are notorious for head gaskets.

I just replaced a head on a vanguard v-twin 18. Complete head with head gasket was $135 - B&S OEM

I bet a dollar to a donut it's a weak coil. They look good when checking for spark when when running they cause poor fire and even make you think it's a dirty carb. Them coils get weak without going bad. But yeah that's totally not firing and def not a burnt valve. I enjoy your business videos... After seeing this I'm a little disappointed. Get a dang socket and pop the valve out clean it and lap it back in go buy him a coil and two new plugs and save that man some money. True techs know kohler is better than briggs. Lol. Also double check the plugs. I bet they are colder plugs. These are high performance engines. And they are dang good motors. I'm even wondering if it wasn't also pulling in oil from the breather on the block. But seeing one cylinder more rich than the other tells me coil. Has to be ignition. But that's why I said in video one.... Leak down test all day !!! If not you will always be changing parts. Don't do that to your own accountability

how did a burnt exhaust valve cause so much oil consumption?
@turckskidoo

I would pull the valve and make sure it’s bad. Are you sure it’s not just carbon build up on the valve and that’s why it looks burnt? I have a fear that a new head may not fix your problem. I have seen many exhaust valves that look like that and they are just carboned up.

I would have pulled the engine and worked on it on a bench...would have been easier than spending 2 hours pulling the head....glad I do my own work and don't pay someone

Is it possible to swap out those vertical shaft Kohler's with a vanguard, just like a horizontal setup or is there more to it? Also, how hard is it to just to remove the valve from the head of you didn't want to buy a new head?
@clsmallenginerepair3814
@clsmallenginerepair3814 4 жыл бұрын
U can swap em.. just more to it. Especially if they hav a pto shaft for tillers or brush hogs. The one i was working in has hydraulics also. The valves are not to bad. Taryl fixes all has a video in the valves. But u hav to lap them to.

Now how much sense would that make? Even using his estimates which would likely to be on the low side, Selling this customer a new two thousand dollar engine with God knows how much labor to get it installed and then likely end up with a complete cobble job. Sounds like the way to go.
@timmersoft
@timmersoft 4 жыл бұрын
@@Georgiagreen317 I was asking in general, not that he should do that to that specific mower. He brought up in the video that you could always swap over to a vanguard, I was just curious how difficult of a job that is since it has hydraulics and such.

If the mower is still in pretty good condition maybe another engine would be better in the long run. Otherwise junk it and buy new.

What would cause an oil leak from this kind of engine? And how hard would it be to fix?

Hard to say without seeing it, but I'd check the valve covers,

C & L Small Engine Repair Lawncare I think I checked those. I have a ch20s kohler installed on my truck mount unit for carpet cleaning. And it leaked A lot of oil earlier. I noticed a small leak at the filter but I can change that out I’m curious what else could give out on this engine to create such a leak. I don’t know a lot about engines and all that but I just started my own carpet cleaning business so have to learn a lot about this one.

That engine is a lot like a car engine. Hydraulic lifters being one. It could be creating alot of pressure in the crank case, blown headgasket, bad rings will cause blowby, which some think is a leak, but it's coming from the tube that comes from engine that runs into carb, Where is it leaking?
@MrAngelrendon
@MrAngelrendon 4 жыл бұрын
C & L Small Engine Repair Lawncare hard to tell... Seems like it was somewhere close to the top of the engine because oil got flung from the fan that spins... but I checked the two valve covers on each side and there were no signs of leaking oil. And the rubber gaskets seemed fine.
@clsmallenginerepair3814
@clsmallenginerepair3814 4 жыл бұрын
There are two bolts that are on top of engine, behind carb. Make sure they're tight. The go straight down thru the block.. I've seen them come loose. And they will throw oil everywhere.

It appears to me that you make very hasty diagnostics. First the bad call with the head gasket and now the assumption the head is shot without even removing the valve. I guess it's easier to sell a customer new parts (head). Maybe remove the valve and see how the seat looks and if the valve won't clean up just replace that. One last remark. You edited out your hourly rate. Just how much of the seven or eight hundred dollar charge is labor and how much is wasted parts. The mark of a true "technician" is saving the customer money. Not selling parts.

If a head has a burnt valve, and i replace just the valve, Cost of valve, spring, retainers, or just buy the kit. Labor cost of seating the valve, clean and prep. Lets say 2 hours. My labor is 40 an hour, so hes in for 80 dollars plus parts. And has half rebuilt head, when he could hav a new head, and dont hav to worry about 7 hours labor again. So in the long run, im saving him a possible large bill later. The 7-8 dollar bill was what a shop chrging 80 dollars an hour would charge. I can always learn more, ill try to catch some of ur videos. Thanks for ur input

@@clsmallenginerepair3814 First off, I charge a flat $40 bucks for inspection and making a decision. (Like Home Depot) Second, after I do I give the customer options. I wouldn't simply make that choice for him. And, I wouldn't install new parts where good one's could be reused. Valve springs, retainers etc. Perhaps, even the the valve. And if I didn't have the proper equipment to do the job, I would send him elsewhere. Valve seat and grinder. Tell us what that head cost and your final bill. Maybe take it a step further and just sell the dude a new motor. But I guess with your logic this equipment has all been discarded. Sad part is, you may be right!

@@Georgiagreen317 the way i see it is this. I could do a valve job, and just get parts that needed replaced. But by the time the customer pays for the labor, he could hav a new head, all new parts, ect.. and not hav to worry about goin back in to fix again. I hav had 1 bring back all season. And that was a bad valve on a new head, 3 weeks later. warranty books calls for 6 hours labor, and thats about what it takes. And 40 for a bench fee is good, i dont charge a bench fee. Probably should, id make more money on the handheld stuff. And why would i give the customer a choice? they go cheap and u get a bring back. They hav a choice, i fix it the way i want, of take it somewhere else. Good luck with ur business. Its always food to hear from other techs. God Bless

@@Georgiagreen317 I'd say in the end but in the begging your right.. and there should have been a leak down test performed.. when that fails which it wouldn't have but when it does you tell the c/s you have to rio it apart to ensure a burnt valve worn cylinder or carbon buildup. This could be cheap for parts with extensive labor or extensive labor and high prices parts.. but I've bought ... excuse the John dear dealer I worked for has bought exhaust valves when they are actually burnt and I pop the retainer..a socket and hammer... Lap a new valve.. replace the gasket and send it. Regardless this was all taken apart with no sense of direction. If the leak down would have been performed it would have passed. Ik this. That says hey dude it's an external issue... Most would have said carb is rich needs a carb... But 9.9 out of 10... Ignition problem. 40is a great diagnosis fee.. just don't tear down a while engine for $40 and be wrong like this guy. Lol. Leak down baby
