Kpop has its own vocabulary and I’m here to help break it down for you, starting with redefining some English words that mean something different in the context of Kpop. This will be part one of an ongoing Kpop glossary series, tentatively planned to contain at least five episodes. There’s a lot of ground to cover so be sure you subscribe if you want to be in the loop when future episodes post! I will also add links to them in this description as they go live over the next few months.

Maybe I'll do another video sometime about "overused Kpop sets" that can also include the corner storefront used in every other JYP video or the arena that looks like a Lynel den from Zelda that directors love to shoot group dance sequences in.

1:39- if I may add on to why a backtrack is used from a production stand point because it’s a niche interest of mine and something that I think recording artist such as Ariana Grande and Whitney Houston and K-pop idols like Rose of blackpink and Irene of red velvet have touched on before and that is you just simply can’t take a full studio with you on stage. When your recording tracks you can pause at anytime and switch out mic’s for certain members and sections. Using Ariana grande as my example because she has really taken to explaining this during her currently on going Eternal sunshine promotions she said she would bring in as many as 16 microphones in to just record one song, this is to catch all the nuance and sound of particular vocal ranges. Now obviously you would think the solution to try and over correct to get that nuance into the stage mic there using, well yes but that would lead to a very botched take on the song if you spend most of it over correcting in a different range, so back tracks are usually the points in the song where they need a little help the song sound closer to how it would actually sound if they were able to take every microphone used and switch them out at break neck speed while still hitting all the choreography of the concert and remaining viable to actually watch

Such a great point. I also find it really interesting how some main vocalists/rappers may opt for hand mics while other members are using headsets during performances so that they can accommodate different performing styles. I don't think most people fully appreciate how much of a gimp those headset mics are in terms of a performer's ability to manage their sound.

But Ariana Grande using backtrack completely different to how Kpop uses it, Ariana only uses it as if she had someone harmonising with her for some parts whilst not using for the most of the song, Kpop uses it for the entire full song, and basically use their own voice to harmonise with the backtrack which is actually singing the song

@CatNagTaylorsVersion 27 күн бұрын
@@user-ij5sp4zv5has I stated in my comment we don’t have a lot of artists or staff speaking on why back tracks are used in extreme details, so I already had extremely limited scope to expand and I think Ariana Grande has left enough space in her explanation to apply and also she’s almost reaching veteran status and has worked on TV shows so I’m sure she’s at least accounted for the tiny bit of nuance that would be how other artists and jobs use them as well

On the subject of music show wins, the first one is actually quite important for the artist and their agency, because it means they can raise their performance fees. It's seen as a sign that they 'made it', in a way (I suppose that you're keeping "encore" for a part 2, the topic is a full can of worms rn lol).

5:18- would it be inappropriate to say Girl Crush concepts have become K-pop equivalent of the “gay club pop music” sub genre of English pop
@overthinkingkpop
@overthinkingkpop Ай бұрын
Haha maybe they're a little related but I think they are their own animal. While there are certainly exceptions, overall they are so much less homoerotic than the name might otherwise imply. Gay club music still has a home of its own in Kpop, too; "Fast Forward," "Panorama," "Go Big or Go Home" etc. all would fit right in at an American gay club.
@CatNagTaylorsVersion
@CatNagTaylorsVersion Ай бұрын
@@overthinkingkpop I mean gay club music has mostly been defined as pop music that makes people want to shake there bootys to songs that details over coming hardship and self discovery, bragging at some points. I think Britney Spears, Avril Lavegin, Kim Petras, Charlie XCX, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, and Kylie Minogue are gay club musics biggest artists, while queer pop music, a different genre that many gay club pop music artists and songs could fit that genre though queer pop is mostly about detailing homoerotic experiences and queer problems once again over a beat that demands people dancing, jumping, splitting, and shaking of the booty

Thank you - and best of luck with the channel! 😊 The approach you're taking is exactly the reason I subscribed. For me, the joys of K-pop aren't just the emotional, visceral highs of the music itself, but also the specificities of it as a form of cultural production that's quite different to how pop is done in the West. Having quality 101s and deep dives into these topics is really needed to convey their complexities and charms to new audiences. (Oh and also if this ever evolves into a Discord server or something, I'm signing right up, don't have much opportunity for quality K-pop discussions 😅)

I think the company says it was predebut, but since they never had any teasers like other groups and annoying videos saying, “New Jeans coming soon “, most of us see hype boy and attention as their debut and we’d kinda like to keep it that way.
