The "We've got one bullet scene" in and of itself establishes that Tin Tin has received marksmanship training. The way he uses his off-hand to support his shooting hand is an established shooting technique, used in the proper posture the technique requires. It lends evidence that he has received formal training, especially considering that in this time period, boys would learn marksmanship in school. As for why the sailors aren't as good of a shot as Tin Tin, well, I don't think we're ever meant to assume that they had an abundance of quality education like Tin Tin.

Tintins predecessor so to speak was a boy scout, so it stands to reason that Tintin would also have been at some point in his life. It would explain his wide and eclectic knowledge and skills. I've sometimes thought about how scouts as a character class would probably be quite op in RPGs, having a wide variety of skills and knowledge that would be easily customised based on what the player wants.

16:45 although bracing your arm with your off hand like Tintin does in this shot is better than not doing so at all, he'd be better served by holding the gun with both hands
@gantzllat
@gantzllat 4 жыл бұрын
@@the_inquisitive_inquisitor That is a technique used for long-range shots using a one-handed gun. It is not meant for a shot out, but to make a one single and precise shot to a far away target, the idea is that holding your arm with the off-hand will diminish the tremble in the hand holding the gun making it easier to aim. Holding the gun with both hands is to group the shots by improving the stability of the gun and diminishing the recoil, something not needed in this scenario since they only have one bullet left.
@the_inquisitive_inquisitor

@@gantzllat idk how much you shoot but the weakest point in your grip is your wrist, not your shoulder or elbow. Supporting your wrist by holding the gun with both hands will result in higher stability than bracing your forearm. Look at any competitive shooter and tell me how many use that style. Okay I did a little research and this is what I found: www.quora.com/What-is-tintins-style-of-using-revolvers-called His shooting style is called "the idiot cartoonist"
@gantzllat
@gantzllat 4 жыл бұрын
@@the_inquisitive_inquisitor As I said, is meant for a single shot. A competitive shoter is not going to do a single shot, but several. If you have many bullets to spare, holding the gun with both hands is the right thing to do. If you have only one shot and better make it count, the rules shange. That way of handling the gun is essentially serving the same function as adding a stock to the pistol.

I know NOTHING about TinTin, but I LOVED this movie. The action was great, the characters were lovable (if a tad annoying, but endearingly so, in Haddock's case), the plot was intriguing, and it did feel like an Indiana Jones for kids type of movie. I also heard somewhere that it was going to be live action and they were going to use prosthetic, but decided to switch to CG/motion capture somewhere along the line.

It looks from the review as though the film is very close to the book. The meeting of Captain Haddock and Tintin takes place in a book called "The Crab with the Golden Claws", but the film handles it very well. It may be worth pointing out that with the exception of 2 or 3 of the earliest adventures, the books are all, at least in English, 62 pages long. So the pacing seems to be spot-on as well. It is a really first-rate series. The artwork is beautiful.

In regards to Tintin's marksmanship, it was believable to me since it's established that Tintin has gone on many adventures like this in the past, AND has his own pistol. So it stands to reason he has experience with firearms. Factor in a keen eye and natural dexterity (All of which I can believe Tintin would have) and him being an expert marksman is well within acceptable boundaries. Yes, he's more skilled than any real life human could ever be. But having more skill than a real life human is just par for the course for fictional characters.

The best part about that Hergé cameo was that it was Edgar Wright's idea. When he did Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the trailer featured Scott (Michael Cera) holding a crude drawing of one of the characters that was done by the artist/writer of the graphic novels that the film is based on. But due to time, Edgar didn't include it in the final film.

You know, compared to the other motion captured films (Monster House, Polar Express), I don't see a lot of moments I would consider Uncanny Valley. It probably helps that the animators did a very good job keeping the characters expressive and fluid -- also with textures. Most people had the issue because the animation made by MCended up being choppy and robotic.

This is one of my absolute favourite films, as both a fan of the Tintin books, and as a film lover. One of the most underrated films ever! I've been dying to do an in-depth analysis of the film's narrative and characters (that's how good it is) but I was worried about the use of clips in the videos. I dunno if I should just rely on stills or if it's safe for me to use footage occasionally. Also, I disagree with what you said about Tintin being too perfect for being able to shoot well. I think it makes him even more awesome. Because really, even with all of his resourcefulness, he's not a perfect guy. He DOES need help from Snowy often, and even Captain Haddock, and he does get hurt a lot. To me, he strikes a perfect balance between vulnerable and strong. And he's a total badass! Although they didn't establish how he knew how to shoot or anything, my guess is that his involvement in so many adventures and dangers, as well as his involvement with the police, has him needing to learn self defence. How to fight and how to shoot and whatnot.

+Daniella Dahoui I knew you would like this review and damn is this a film that gets better on repeat viewings. While the bigger picture is nothing really new or deep for the adventure genre,I think this is like the recent Cinderella film in which the smaller details are the stuff that truly makes this film such a treat and a much better film then it has any right to be. I think my "childhood defining book series" as a kid would be either be The Magic Tree House or Captain Underpants. For my teen years, as embarrassing as it is admit, Twilight...I admit, I outgrew it a year after I read it. I don't like Twilight at all now. Actually, Rogue, if you want to see a modern good mystery show for kids, watch Gravity Falls. It has a lot of hidden clues in the background about the main mystrey, the characters are fleshed out and likable, it is really funny, has one of the most realistic sibling relationships I seen in a western cartoon, has moments that get so dark you wonder how the hell they got past the Disney censors (like animal heads spewing blood from their mouths and eye sockets and that's the first example I can think of!) and the main villain is a blast to watch, being the perfect combo of funny and terrifying.

I watched the film with my Mum, since, like myself, she enjoyed reading the comic growing up. She liked it, although she wasn't so thrilled of the over-ridiculous over-the-top moments like the scene where Haddock blows up the dam and the whole town comes crashing down around them. I understood where she was coming from, but it didn't bother me as much as it did her, but that's probably because I've grown up in a time when entertainment was more over-the-top than the time she grew up in (and it's getting increasingly more so as time goes on). Still, an excellent adaptation that mostly captures the spirit of the comics.

Hi there, really loved your enthusiasm and review. As a french canadian, Tintin is basically required reading and along with Dragon ball, was my book series as a kid. By the way, there have been only two live-action Tintin movies, and three theatrically released animated features apart from the 1947 stop-motion version of The Crab with the Golden Claws made prior to Spielberg's version. The first was a compilation of episodes from the first Tintin animated series in the late fifties based on The Calculus Affair. The next two were specifically written for the screen and were called "Tintin and the Temple of the Sun" (mainly based on Prisoners of the Sun with an abridged version of The Seven Crystal Balls serving as the first act) and "Tintin and the Lake of Sharks" (an entirely original adventure). All these animated movies (and the tv show) were produced by Belvision and written by Greg, the editor of Tintin magazine and creator of the franco-belgian comic Achille Talon. You should seek them out :) Also, in french the "s" in "Georges" is silent. Good day, and sorry for the wall of text.

Old video, but I just discovered your channel in the Onision Books Journey (ugh, awful awful, but great videos though!) and now I want to see more of your library! Had to click this one because Tintin was also a big part of my childhood, and I think it's a staple of European comics - so often we see American versions of things ruin the original, but this movie was hardly the case, and I'm glad to have found someone who agrees! I understand that it has flaws too, however, and most people that didn't like it must be because of said flaws. Regardless, I love both the books, the TV show and the movie. Tintin is an incredible character, and I'm glad Jackson and Spielberg managed to introduce him and all the other characters to a new audience; being creative while also staying true the the material. Hopefully Hergé would have liked this. Although, yes, most of the transitions in the movie are incredible, I can't help but notice the ship sailing in the desert to be a bit too similar to the Black Pearl sailing through the dunes in the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Nothing wrong with that, just something I took note of, given that these two franchises were my a big part of my childhood. And yes, Tintin as a franchise is older, however this movie came out after Pirates 3, and again, can't help see the similarities. Not that I mind.

I still am kinda sad that it wasn't first produced in french (the original language of the book series).... We watched it at school with the french dub and..... I wasn't the only one who was slightly disappointed....

Honestly I think the animation is great! When I watched it as a kid I didn’t even know that it was animated until my like 5th viewing! I literally said “wait what?? This is animated?!!??” Pretty sure it was me finally noticing the transitions would be basically impossible in live action

The problem with the crane fight and so many other scenes of the type is not that the audience forgot they were watching a cartoon. It's that it's very much in contrast to the spirit of Tintin. Tintin was never intended for over the top hollywood action sequences. If you read the books you should've noticed how the movie fails to represent Tintin as originally conceived for new audiences.

I grew up reading and loving the Tintin books. Tintin was my childhood hero. And then I watched the animated series, which were adapted very faithfully from the books, and are one of my favourite animated series. So I got really excited even before I heard the theme song playing (ah, how I love that theme song) and for a moment, I thought you were reviewing the animated series. But then I remembered I had made the same mistake with your FMA review (I excitedly thought you were going to review one of my favourite anime FMAB but you ended up reviewing the garbage live-action movie), and I remembered about the (more recent) Tintin movie, which I didn't really like all that much. It was much better than the old French Tintin live-action movies, though (even though Jean-Pierre Talbot was a very cute Tintin.) The fact that I had forgotten about the Spielberg movie but remembered the animated series (that I had watched years ago) says a lot about the movie. I think I'm going to rewatch the animated series now.

I never watched the movie when it came out because I never read the books and the animation was definitely hitting the uncanny valley for me, but now you have convinced me to give it a chance. I'm not a huge 'adventure movie' person, but I'll give it a look.

20:09 Now I'm wondering how the animators did that sequence. I'm not a professional animator but I'm usually pretty good at getting the gist of how a CGI animator does stuff like this. Mind you, the computers used to render movies like this are usually wicked powerful, so it wouldn't surprise me if what we're seeing is almost exactly what's happening.

16:36 "Tintin is an impossibly good shot" See, there's an easy out for that. Tintin was officially trained in guns as we see in the comics, he was a boyscout and may very well afford self defence classes since his job is a dangerous one of being an international reporter that's always trying to get a scoop (like in Tintin in America where he took down the infamous Chicago mob boss himself, Al Capone) hell he even accidentally got drafted into the Arabian army in one of the comics. I think he has more than enough gun training to outmaneuver a bunch of mutineering sailors

I keep forgetting this is Speilburg, because it seems like it'd be the middle part of Zemeckis' "Mocap Trilogy." It looks like there might have been technicians or designers from this crew that worked on Polar Express and Christmas Carol, just based on how the models and environments function

Owh mawh feef hurth afthah tha enthin'.... Unlike a number of the movies you covered previously, this one I have actually seen! I have to whole heartily agree with most the points you made. It was a very clean, beautiful, and entertaining experience! My whole family wanted to see more - I even pondered "Did they ever continue the story with this? I loved watching this movie! I want more!" It really felt kind of like a cartoon version of Indiana Jones' old movies. But a bit more lighthearted, which worked well. If I ever have children I'd be happy to share this one with them. -_I'll Be Watching._

Just curious, but shouldn't the fact there was a round in the magazine when Tintin checked his ammo count mean that he actually had two bullets as one would have also have been in the chamber? I haven't seen the movie so I don't know the set-up to what he was doing or if he was changing magazines when he looked.

I grew up on the cartoon, and when I heard of this movie I HAD to watch it. And by God, it was awesome. The action sequences were just amazing, voices spot on, and I was basically going "yea, this is basically what I hoped it would be!". Especially, that chase sequence with the tank, in the middle east. Holy hell, that was insane. 10/10 would watch again! Never caught the Herge cameo on my first watch though, thanks for that!

I absolutely love this movie. I'd put it easily into my top 5 favourite animated films since 2010 and in complete honesty, off the top of my head, the one-shot chase scene may be my favourite film scene ever (but I'm a sucker for one shots *cough* The Avengers *cough*). I demand a sequel! And this review really makes me want to go back and watch Tintin again. I never got a chance to read the books as a kid, or watch the cartoon on a regular basis, and this definitely makes me want to check them out. As for the uncanny valley thing, it does happen to me sometimes. But not with this movie. The animation and design is just too good to think it's creepy. Expression and movement are expressed too well and texturing is, for the most part, superb (you can see the individual hairs on Haddock's jumper when the sun hits it, for god sake!) Even with the cartoonized features of some characters like Haddock's eyes or the Thompsons' noses, the animation just has too much soul and character to be unnerving for me.

25:13 I'm pretty sure this movie also used Mo-cap, so on top of all of that there's a chance that real actors might've had to go through the mo-cap set equivalent of those scenarios. Generally the mo-cap sets don't look anywhere near as exciting since the only thing the cameras need to see are the suits themselves and sometimes the actor's faces (depending on if the creators decide to do the face tracking during or after filming on the mo-cap set).

I collected all of the Tintin books 40 years ago when I lived overseas and have read each numerous times. They are classics and read like a film story board. The artwork is masterful as well. The film is a completely different medium and doesn’t require as much imagination, but it is very well done. I purchased a copy for my collection, and will buy the sequel(s) as well!

I didn't have time to read the books, even when I worked in a library and they had one or two there. However, I did see the HBO series (I've heard there was an earlier one as well) and loved it. It had adventure, continuity, and was fun to watch. It sounds like the producers of the movie didn't approach it like a cartoon but like a movie that happened to be animated, and I wish that would happen more often without motion capture and "photorealism". I do want to see this movie.
