Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop discusses Nirvana's contract & how Krist Novoselic was the catalyst behind it. Sub Pop was Nirvana's first label. They released much of Nirvana's material, most notably their debut album Bleach. Sub Pop also has connections to Nevermind & In Utero.

People think that everything nirvana did was luck and the right timing but kurt was a very focused artist read everything he could about the music world and had a perfect best friend in krist who was big and strong kurt hide behind him .. $ 606 bleach ..10 cent contract biggest band in history !

1.9 million in North America. Tbf by the time Nirvana became huge it wasn't because of that albums songs the average fans didn't probably buy that ALbum or even know about it

So Sub Pop, on an investment of nothing, got a lifetime of royalties and millions and millions of dollars. A supposed Indy label that would make a major label blush with their something for nothing attitude.

They made the investment in the band initially Hopi g for long term gain over the three album contract. It’s fair contractually that they were compensated for that.

Recording albums isn't cheap especially for a indie label that can't afford an attorney so they did invest

If not for the initial investment by sub pop, no one would have ever heard of Nirvana. They would have been one of a million bands that played some shows for a while, then split up, and probably all of the members would have to get real jobs.

@@AngryChair6 did you watch the video bud? They didn’t spend a dime to record Nirvanas album. They spent NOTHING and Got millions and quite smug about it to boot. No skin off my back but it’s kind of amusing to me that many Indy acts and labels who claim a holier than thou attitude with money change their tune when some money comes their way.
