Both of the responses to your comment are accurate.. ...But, not by invalidating Mr Nanjiani's lexicon! Anybody who has enough of sound experience with not just every kind of oil but even cooking-oils knows very well that oils do tend to get sticky on lower temperatures.

There is a phrase Chikna Ghada (चिकना घडा) meaning slippery vessel, referring to a person who doesn't care about any criticism about their behaviour or doesn't listen to any advice. Chiknai (चिकनाई) means fat / grease . So in that sense fat (Chiknai) makes something or someone slippery. If we say उस बर्तन में बहुत चिकनाई हैं। Us bartan mein bahut chiknai hain. i.e. That vessel is very oily / greasy (and might be hard to clean).

"Ala" doesn't mean just good and itself isn't a slang...it describes something of the highest/supreme quality, taste or character in Urdu. When you add "Bohat" ("very much") to it, it gets redundant and that redundancy is what makes the expression very informal.

Yes. Slick would be the correct meaning of chikna if you're using it to describe a person. However, when describing let's say a stone or a piece of iron as chikna pathhar or chikna loha, the correct meaning would be smooth.

@@Vinayrsy 95% is not Hindi. It's an equal blend of Farsi and Hindi, with the script being Arabic as Farsi is written in Arabic. Farsi used to be the royal language in India for many years and so in army camps, where both Farsi and Hindi soldiers lived together, Urdu was born. And in India, HINDUSTANI, was most common. Not Hindi. We spoke a mix of Urdu and Hindi. Infact even today Hindi speakers use Urdu terms as well. In Bollywood it's very easy to spot.

The reason they were able to figure out Topi and Pata probably has more to do with the fact that Urdu and Spanish have common roots. • Pata [Spanish] ~ pedal (on foot), paer (foot), pae (leg) ~ pedestrian, pedal etc. in English • Topi [Urdu] ~ toupee [English/French], tapa/tapon [Spanish] ~ top So, Urdu and Spanish have a bunch of similar words. • Room = kamra [Urdu], cámara [Spanish] ~ chamber • Table = mez [Urdu], mesa [Spanish] • Teeth = daant [Urdu], dientes [Spanish] ~ dentist • Rock = pathar [Urdu], piedra [Spanish] ~ Petra, petrify, Peter • Chest = seena [Urdu], seno [Spanish] Even the "cheez" Kumail mentions is related to cosa [Spanish] and chose [French].
