Kidneys possess some capacity to heal, but it varies between acute and chronic kidney injuries. Acute kidney injury (AKI) typically results from sudden damage or stress to the kidneys, often reversible with prompt treatment. Conversely, chronic kidney injury (CKI) involves gradual, irreversible loss of kidney function over time, often due to underlying conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. While AKI may see partial or full recovery with proper management, CKI usually leads to permanent impairment, necessitating long-term interventions such as dialysis or transplantation. Timely diagnosis and treatment are critical for both conditions to mitigate further damage and improve outcomes.
