Yay! So glad you loved these songs- I knew Lex would appreciate the bass in these cuts. Could you hear Michael McDonald on those sweet backing vocals on "Young Blood"? The whole album is wonderful and I hope you will listen to the rest, it is fine with me if it is off camera! I never saw any other reaction of yours to her music- could you possibly be confusing her with another artist? She has many great albums- I particularly love The Magazine, from 1984, Traffic From Paradise from 1993, and The Evening of My Best Day, from 2003. Also 2 of her covers albums- Pop Pop and It's Like This (on which she covers Steely Dan's "Showbiz Kids" with Joe Jackson.) Lex, you got my last name on the second try- it rhymes with GRAB-a-neck! Thanks again!! 🎵❤️🎵

Rickie Lee's music is very "cinematic" to me.... can't believe she has never done a movie score (as far as I know). The Magazine album comes to mind. Prelude to Gravity. I have all of her albums (even Ghostyhead....sigh...), just love this artist. Oh, and also, her amazing voice is actually better live than it is on recordings. Crazy.

See the Grammy nominated song from the same album "Last Chance Texaco" which is a ballad with an unusual metaphor (and the title of her autobiography). Some of her ballads are really touching, and she does a lot of background vocals on them. The big hit on that album was "Chuck E's In Love" which was based on something her then boyfriend Tom Waits said. I saw them both on a double bill, backed by the same L.A. studio musicians. Her uptempo songs are very similar to what was called "jump blues" in the 40's, played by small groups with horns.

Funny to see you with your SD t-shirts since Walter Becker produced her "Flying Cowboys" album and Donald Fagen played on her "Pirates" album. If you check out the list of musicians on her albums, you'll see a lot of SD connections. Amazing songs on that first album, try the slower ones: Company, The Last Chance Texaco, Night Train... If you feel like revisiting Joni, try her jazzier stuff: Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, with Jaco on bass.

This whole album is great. My favorite is Night Train. Chuck E's in Love was the big hit. She is still touring. In college I took a silkscreen/woodcut class and did a silkscreen of this album cover. Her songs go from funky to very introspective (sort of like Joni's Court and Spark...think Raised on Robbery vs. Down to You...Sheryl Crow too on her first album Solidify vs. We Do What We Can). If you want to make Nick cry play him So Long from Rickie's 1983 EP Girl at her Volcano. If you like the girl group street singing stuff listen to Laura Nyro's Gonna Take a Miracle album.

Saw that performance as well. The story about that was that the cast wanted her to perform "Danny's All-Star Joint," because of Dan Aykroyd. Someone, probably Rickie's management or label insisted on her performing her hit "Chuck E's In Love," and that was that.

I first saw Rickie on Saturday Night Live in 1979. I fell in love with her and her music. I bought this album the next day. Later that year, I saw her in concert and it's the best concert I ever saw even to this day. This album was such a splash that it caused Rickie to win a grammy for best new artist in 1980. The entire album is great. My favorite song on album is Last Chance Texaco. Rickie was influenced by many people but her boyfriend at the time, Tom Waits, was an influence. It's appropriate that you wearing Steely Dan shirts. Flying Cowboys is an album by Rickie Lee Jones that was released in September 1989 and produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan.

Rickie Lee loved old jazz singers and older forms of American music. She was a song stylist who inhabited different personalities in the same way actors slip into different roles where they feel most comfortable and not their exposed vulnerable selves. Tom Waits her one time husband, also was someone who famously portrayed different personalities while he was singing. Getting back to Rickie, a reviewer has said her first two albums are jazzy masterpieces and I couldn't disagree. But what immediately strikes me the most about hearing her music, as well as Sheryl Crow, Steely Dan and Little Feat, is the commonality of the L.A Sound. To me they all radiate that characteristic vibe. Joni Mitchell too perhaps in her latter albums with Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny. In the end and at the beginning, Rickie Lee was really special like none other, widely popular and greatly loved. Who could ask for more?!

Rickie Lee Jones appearance - as an unknown (one month after her debut record had been released) - on Saturday Night Live on April 7, 1979, sparked an overnight sensation. She performed "Chuck E.'s in Love" and "Coolsville". She was covered by Time magazine on her very first professional show, in Boston, and they dubbed her "The Duchess of Coolsville".
@jollyrodgers7272

Wow, I suggested these a long time ago - both these are off her wonderful debut album(1979), which had some of the best musicians, vocalists, engineers, etc. behind it. Check out the whole album, and YOUNG BLOOD has a fine official music video to go with it (a very street-wise feel to the whole album). DANNY isn't Honky Tonk, it's more Bebop Jazz/Rock. RLJ wasn't so 'hip' as she was Coool (The Duchess of Coolsville). React please to WEASEL AND THE WHITE BOYS COOL, LAST CHANCE TEXACO, NIGHT TRAIN, and CHUCK E'S IN LOVE (all from this album).
@MisterWondrous
@MisterWondrous 2 жыл бұрын
Yay! I had often heard the second song at smart parties but never knew the name, but loved loved loved the sound and style. The ones of hers that jump to mind as being essential are "Coolsville", "Satellites" and her beautiful cover of "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" by Gerry & the Prosthetic Leg, I mean Pacemakers. The "Satellites" official video is beautiful in the same way as Danny Elfman's "Ice Dance" theme in Edward Scissorhands. In fact, you can view your fans as satellites, which is what she is singing about. As an aside, the past 12 hours has found me listening to a dozen reactions to "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by the Hollies, and today a kind woman in Africa was saying it was most timely, what with the world being the way it is today. And she said that the world should know this song right now, and that it could help. That has been my contention as well. Changing hearts. There is a live version you may not have heard already. I realize your plate is overfull already. Prioritization might be aided by having the first served being both timeless and timely. Just trying to be helpful here. A critical mass of hearty songs might melt even the most intractable hearts.

Then stayed to hear more tracks as I was browsing the records. I left with some albums ...inc' hers. Lol Great album. Love the song Chuck E's in Love but my favourite track just has to be "The Last Chance Texaco" ... Amazing lyrics leaves you convinced it's the sad parting of a relationship that has broken down....very very clever ....It's actually about a vehicle that's basically broken down beyond repair. It's so sad because Rickie Lee is so clever singing emotionally these lyrics, it takes a while before you realize. Glad you got introduced to this artist. I bought this album when it first came out. Can't believe I missed this reaction. That whole debut album is great. My favorite is Weasel and the White boys Cool. Definitely an album you'd both appreciate.

Fun Facts: Born in 1954, Rickie Lee is only a little less than 7 years older than Sheryl. Crow actually got a rather late start (for a rock star) in her career, releasing her first album (Tuesday Night Music Club) in 1993 when she was 32.

Sheryl Crow is a bad example, since pretty much all of Sheryl's good songs is written by other (better) musicians. Rickie is the whole package - she writes and plays multiple instruments and almost invented her own genre with this kind of swing-funk-jazz-pop. Listen to Coolsville for some good blues or Pirates.

What's throwing you off with Danny's All-Star Joint is that it is a 3-step boogie instead of a 2-step. A little funkier, a little more struttin' , and it reverses the fast and slow every few bars to give a swinging feel.

I can’t believe you two just keep pulling out the artists of my life. I was big into RLJ when she debuted this album. Chuckie’s In Love was the big radio hit so that and Danny’ All Star Joint were my favorite two songs. AND… I was lucky enough to see her live in a tiny club in Boston when she was touring and doing this stuff. So intimate and she was just sooo cool. Had the parking meter as a prop (goes with the lyrics from Chuckie) and rocked the beret and just the whole package.
